I don't think it is.... far bigger than the Merlin or Hercules.... its just under 7.75 inches diameter.... and the solid gudgeon pin of such small diameter is quite odd. 🤔

I was looking at the scale of it and my brain went Marine Diesel, and got side tracked wondering if it was a expansion piston for double or triple expansion steam or something. But it's really not built strongly enough for that purpose, so Air compression piston would probably make the best sense. Or any other hydraulic application without high pressure requirements, but it'd be odd to make a positive displacement pump that scale and low pressure.

I have seen them many years ago . American nascar pistons . I would imagine anything from a F1 to a nascar would use them . 🤔

The paint is actually from the 1970's! Electric blue metallic cellulose ... I then gave it several coats of clear lacquer... On a couple of the engines I added a little holographic metal flake to the base coat.

its British, its not out of a n Antar wrong top, its probably going to be petrol........ its not a Meteor, wrong top and not long enough........ cut sides suggests high speed, I'm thinking its an Aircraft piston from a radial at a guess. Maybe air cooled. solid pin suggests aero engine...... thats all i have got tbh, and it would fit with the large bore.
@theflyingfool
@theflyingfool 6 күн бұрын
I think it might be some sort of prototype because that solid billet would never be put in an engine as a standard item, it's way too heavy.

Has to be like a tank right? Looks too small for a ship and too big for a plane, they didn't do trains (at a brief glance) and busses also wouldnt be that big but were before the name change anyway so, only leaves tanks
@billhanson4921
@billhanson4921 6 күн бұрын
most British post war tanks went to diesel quick, its not a diesel piston the crown's wrong, its not as meteor, crown does not fit, i'm thinking at a total guess that its an early aircraft engine of some type
@PJOZeus
@PJOZeus 6 күн бұрын
@@billhanson4921 or the simple answer - it's not *post* war (assuming you're referring to the second not the first) - the company made tank parts so Could be Aero I suppose on a bigger craft I was thinking more fighter sized at the time which its obviously too heavy for but not sure if they ever did bombers

I fondly remember this aircraft at LTN way back in the early 1970s!! After being retired by the RAF this example, XB259 was purchased by Courtline Aviation. The intention was to use it to transport the then extremely large Rolls Royce RB211 engines, installed on Courtline Lockheed Tristars, if an aircraft required an engine replacement away from base. It was never used in ‘anger’. I recall the aircraft sitting in the ‘graveyard’ for several years, until being bought by museum in the mid 1970s. I pray 🙏🏻 for her continued preservation.
