I was taught to torque the Bolts in sequence in steps: eg, 22, 45, 68.

Having two engines in a catamaran is a significant safety feature. When something goes wrong with one engine you can just shut it down and keep motoring on the other to a safe place to fix it. A broken valve spring will give no warning and 9/10 it will happen at the worst possible time.

I was tought to never use the head bolts twice get new ones torque 22. 45. 68 your pattern was correct. I am a cirt. IO OMC mech. Ret.

Just started watching seeing a lot of comments about head removal and refit nothing wrong here all of your ideas are sound i have seen a lot worse in my life and fixed it the same way,it’s comes down to what you are happy with the only thing I would suggest you do Is adjust tappets and do a 3 step tension of NEW head bolts.good job thanks for the journey, Peter

I've had the same with a 3 cylinder 20hp Yanmar, the owners ran it for over an hour in order to get to their mooring after it started rattling ! Same as you though valve spring only. Lucky though as no bent push rod and 1 of the collets was laying beside the push rod of another cylinder and nothing was stopping it falling into the camshaft area, bar luck !

Tye, your skills are endless! Everyone is asking, how many hours on that engine? Metal fatigue in the spring, so you will replace them all? Sailing Zingaro just did a similar job on his engine.

Thanks Dana! Yeah, just decided to replace them all for piece of mind. Fluke metal fatigue thing at 1500 hours. Go figure

Good time to check glow plugs, also considering the fuel filter is drawing down might be wise to have injectors pressure tested.

So there were 2 boats...old and new ?? I just watched 2 new engines go in the repaired boat....so there was a previous Dauntless ? (new sub!)

Wow, so great you didn't have any more damage! That was pretty close. Great idea to just replace all the springs. Wondering about a valve adjustment while you were there. Might be a good thing to do as a baseline if you don't know when it was done last. That did sound really nice when you were done! Oh, and Hi from Colorado! F

There's a rope trick for gas engines you pull the plug put some rope in the cylinder rotate engin by hand to have piston come up to tops far as it will go and stop t he rope will hold valves in place to replace springs and push rods. I can't see why you couldn't pull injector put the rope in lots a string in and do the same thing.

You don't need to with a diesel, the piston to head clearance is minimal so you won't get anything in there anyway.

Just some advice, you really should cap off those outlets on the fuel rail, common rail diesels absolutely do not appreciate even a few microns worth of foreign matter/dust in their fuel system. I don't know about yanmars but most common rail injector pipes are one use only as well

Has the timing belt or chain broke which is dropped the valve into the piston

No it could locked it up if it imprinted the valve into the piston

How many hours on the engine with the broken spring? Were both halves of the valve keeper found?

1500 hours, and yep! Everything was just laying on top of the head. I can’t believe that the keepers didn’t fall down the push rod holes!

@@rogerkerkmann sounds like a great combo. $3500 and you could have a bldc motor and controller that will cover your needs in a majority of situations. Not to mention evening the load on your rigging in large swells, speed augmentation in light winds, one less bildge that stinks and is dirty, and fewer hours on the diesels.
