Thank you Daniel for a very impressive instruction. It's unfortunate for me that Three years ago I jumped into this hobby with not experience. I'm still a fool, I like to believe people are good and honest and it just ain't so anymore; it deeply saddens me. I no I've fallen into the hunter snare to many times now, but many, many thanks to you for sharing your wealth of knowledge that is help so many collectors like myself and bringing honesty back to the profession. My Lord, please bless Daniel in all that he does, that is my prayer request. In Jesus precious and Holy name; Amen.

Been watching your videos for a few months now... Getting active in coins again after decades of just buying bullion. I'm really impressed with your videos... So much is coming to coin collecting since I last was involved in numismatics. I mean, it's just unbelievable that the Chinese are counterfeiting Morgan's and the US government lets them ship counterfeit coins into our country without repercussion. But I've learned so much from your channel on so many different topics. Your content is definitely a treasure to the numismatic community.

Dan, I collected coins for years, and prefer nice bright over toned coins, making my chances of getting a cleaned coined much easier if purchasing raw. Even though I know the basics of what to look for and stay away from, it is still very helpful for a refresher of a video as you just shown. Thank you for continuing to share and educate your followers..

Thanks for the video! I always learn something on this channel. The whole topic of cleaning is complicated, to be sure. If I'm suspicious of a coin that I see in person, I ask the dealer if he thinks it's been worked on in any way. Often the answer is not what I expect. I've even taken a few coins to different dealers I trust and have gotten different opinions. Online, I have to be really confident to make the purchase.

That was well done and illustrative. I assume all raw coins are cleaned and when viewed, the condition must prove otherwise. If the coin is in a paper flip, and it has all these marketing notes all over it like DMPL, GEM , don't take offense when I laugh in your face

Great Video! Caveat Emptor - "Let the Buyer Beware." As a Buyer I take advantage of people who accidentlly buys a cleaned coin on Ebay. My best example what I am talking about is a 1892 50C NGC Columbian AU Details Improperly Cleaned. The Seller stated he bought the coin on Ebay as a 1892 Columbian BU. When he got the coin he sent it off to NGC to be graded, and the coin came back with AU Details Improperly Cleaned. The Buyer on the Description said he bought it as BU, and said, well, I can now see that NGC is correct. "In 1492 Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue," so the Seller decided to start the Auction off at $14.92 w $5.00 shipping. Since nobody liked the words "Improperly Cleaned," there was only one person who bid on it, me, and the coin is beautiful! Improperly Cleaned...don't look at them guys!

One of your best and informative videos yet..in my opinion..I've come to understand about cleaned coins somewhat. But this video showed me just how little I had learned..I began collecting and selling over 2 and a half years now and I owe all my knowledge to you and blueridge.. well a few others as well. But Coin help U and blueridge are my numismatic professors .. I've never missed a video and try to watch the older videos when ever I get any extra time.. I refer everyone I meet to both channels and I strive to be as honest and helpful as my mentors... Pay it forward so to speak.. A huge thank you to both my mentors. I don't think I would be where I am today without their help and teaching...

There are legitimate coin dealers on eBay but there are a couple that destroy coins they sell at premiums. One dealer polishes Morgans to a burnished state. Whether the coins are uncirculated or VG, they have the same burnish. Then you have those that use chemicals to turn coins purple and call them toned, even brand new silver eagles. Let the buyer beware but this intentional destruction of coins for profit is low, IMO.

Great examples! Those borderline ones like the 1885 can be tough, but the more coins you see, the easier it gets. Also, trust your instincts! I have learned my first impression of a coin tends to be accurate, rather than what I rationalize later.

I purchased a $20 Double Gold Eagle Dated 1904 on Ebay from ICG Graded MS64. When I got it I mailed it down to NGC to be Re-Graded. (Looked so beautiful) They Graded it CLEANED. I mailed it back to the Ebay Guy and He said I took it out of the folder and no money to be refunded. Then I got NGC to give a letter to Ebay and then He was forced to give me back my money or be penalized from Ebay.

Brilliant video. Your comparison on the reflective nature of cleaned vs uncleaned has really helped me. I’ve just started collecting in the UK and collecting crown coins. I brought 2 Queen Victoria crowns recently. I now suspect their shiny nature means they may have been cleaned but their details are still very fine to extremely fine. Will the possible ‘cleaning’ greatly effect the value of a coin that is still features wise very fine? I guess that partly depends on who is willing to buy. Thanks again

Cleaned coins are like regummed postage stamps, even experts can be fooled... IMHO, they are several stages for cleaned coins : 1. Cleaned coin with soapy water (harmless if not encouraged for dirty/greasy coins) and/or coin preservation 2. Cleaned coins in order to enhance appearance but without altering the coin surfaces (remove black silver spots with a soft eraser, using sodium bicarbonate...) => acceptable 3. Mildly cleaned coins : damaged surfaces but still has it's natural look and hard to tell at first glance => acceptable with a great discount 4. Harshly cleaned/polished coins : Coin has it's patina destroyed and lost it's natural look (for example very shiny but lost it's cartwheel luster or a very shiny worn coin) => No more than melt or face value

Thanks Daniel ! Very nice video. I think picking up if a coin is cleaned or not is a bit difficult but with time, I will get better. Early on I might have seen see those coins all shiny like 1943 wheats you think wow. Now, not so much cause I know they a re-plated or buffed. For Morgans, a little tougher for me. It takes time to learn and having examples of cleaned, partially cleaned coins next to MS examples will only make it easier to identify cleaning.

Silly thing but look for brand new shiny coins in your change, look carefully :) Then, take a brown toned penny and try to erase it with an eraser, you'll see the difference between a shiny coin and a cleaned one 😉

The professional KZfaq video watcher's opinion: If it's a truly cleaned coin it's fairly obvious. If a coin doesn't appear cleaned and the grading companies have called it out it's time to question their motives. I don't believe in "special sauce" abilities of grading companies and I'm not sucking up for them. I think it's more likeluy that as humans they fall victim to being haughty, grandiose, angry a nd judgemental and shouldn't bne so easily sucked up to. Did I mention the greed motive? Havn't you noticed the sadistic personalities of the suck up numismatists? Wassup!

So all the historic coins that have been cleaned/restored are worth less....interesting. I thought being able to see detail clearly instead of barnacles and decay added value. Or is it all bs,,,,,, gotta have the "right name" to "restore " coins. Not saying its not a delicate process to do correctly. A coin is worth what someone is willing to pay for it,, cleaned or not.

@@CoinHELPu I know,, it just makes no sense. You clean an "ancient" coin, it makes it better. You clean an old-abused coin you are punished for it. Its much like the chimp and ladder experiment where the chimps were sprayed,,, soon they started attacking other chimps that approached the ladder themselves without knowing why. Personally ,I like to see fine details on coins...and think they should be judged/graded on their own merit without "cleaning" being such a big factor.
