For anyone thinking these situations are far fetched and privacy really isn't that important, there was a parent who sent photos of their child to their doctor and it was flagged as illegal by google. His account was closed and he lost access to all his files. He appealed the decision to google, which was denied. The police also started investigating and he was finally cleared after 10 months. Imagine 10 months of accusations of being a pedo, all because Google's bots

Part of the reason why I don't use Google, or Good 'Cloud'... I don't use any "Cloud". You may get a cheap phone if you want to send someone pictures like that. "Cloud" is very easy to bypass. I also only use DuckDuckGo as my search engine. I have very little to no spam/ads.

@@ARockRaider Being in a ToS doesn't make it legal. There have been numerous cases when a ToS has been tossed out in court. Generally speaking, a ToS isn't binding if you are only able to see it/accept it after making a purchase. So, for example, World of Warcraft's ToS isn't binding becuase generally speaking you cannot see/accept it until after you've bought the game and used the one-use code. You cannot return it if you do not agree to the ToS. It isn't binding if it is overly long and complicated. (If a layman cannot reasonably understand it.) It can be invalidated if it is overly broad. Fun fact. Sewing patterns by major companies used to include a ToS inside the package. For the last ten years, my only relationship with Microsoft has been, "how much more crap am I willing to put up with from Microsoft before I ditch Windows completely?" I switched to Linux Mint over a month ago and I don't regret it one bit. Every time I've had to "go under the hood" with Windows (edit a Registry setting, change a config file, edit the Startup settings), it's been to prevent Microsoft from doing something sh*tty to me. I'm actually enjoying the learning curve with Linux and discovering new things about an operating system that's not constantly trying to screw me over.

What I have noticed is, if you create a local account for Win 11 via scripted setup (Basically an automated Win 11 install), it will STILL Bitlocker encrypt the drive, but hold onto the encryption ON THE MACHINE until you sign into a Microsoft account. Which means, you may think you have dodged a bullet with your local account set up, but you just primed the gun for a borked update to lose all your data with no encryption key to recover it... If it is the Home version, you are SOL as the management tool for BitLocker that is linked to when you go to tweak this, is Win 11 Pro ONLY, so Microsoft wants to sell you a pro license to fix it.
@soundspark
@soundspark 24 күн бұрын
There are more reasons than this that anyone with any technical knowledge should be using Pro. Considering all the walls I have run into fixing Home SKU systems I prefer Pro. Of course either way BitLocker lockout with no recovery key is fatal to your data. Putting it in Home in a stealthy manner I do agree is a horrible idea due to the risk of total data loss. By the way, if you have a Local account and never registered a Microsoft account, are you saying it locks the drive? My understanding is that it kept the drive unlocked (suspended) until logging into a Microsoft Account and uploading the recovery key to that account.
@CMDRSweeper
@CMDRSweeper 24 күн бұрын
@@soundspark YT tends to shadow replies to comments, but I will try to see, post a reply or edit your current comment if it does. But yes, it encrypts the drive in the home version and probably Pro as well, but to see the key you need the BitLocker management application / part that is restricted to the Pro version, meaning you can see the thing in the settings, but if you click it, it takes you to the MS store where it wants to sell you a Pro license. While you may be able to do some Command Line stuff to extract the key, any way for a normie or anyone else is not possible to even get the key out. Only way to fix it is to switch the encryption off and let it decrypt the drives (Which it does for now) and then disable the BitLocker service to hope to have some sort of control over it being enabled again on an update.

Microsoft can also scrap the data or train AI on it. And this is what everyone forgets. These servers get backed up. When you tell Microsoft to st stop steeling your data it doesn't erase the backups. And that data could still be around for years in the backups.

A few years ago they were doing this exact same thing. With nearly each windows update they would automatically install one drive (i had uninstalled it before this), automatically sign you into it (i had a local account and was only signed into MS Office), and upload as many files as they could starting with pictures while removing the local copies. I uninstalled one drive several times with this and kept an eye on it during each update, even logging out of ALL software that used a microsoft account and it would still sign me back in. With each day that passes I am 2 days closer to Linux.

Well, I did try Linux Mint 18 back in 2016 (I had used Windows at home from W95 to W7) . I'm still using Mint (21.3) right now, and I have no intention to change to anything else (with the exception of Mint 22). It just works. And for a former Windows-user it's pretty easy to learn. Not 1:1 copy of Windows UI, but not absurdly different either.

The implications of this are rather horrible. If you have some data you really do not want to send online (like private keys) and something like an update suddenly even once turns the file syncing up the data online you are basically screwed: once the data has been uploaded it's there and all you can do is damage control at that point. Even if you remove or overwrite the data from the remote disk do you really think the original data is actually gone and not only moved away from the eyes of the end user? Do you really think you can inspect all the updates and be paranoid about these settings all the time without ever letting your guard down? Microsoft can try this as many times they want and you'll need to only slip up once. The odds are really not on the side of the end user.

If you use a computer in any sort of professional capacity you likely have files on your computer that you don't have a license to share, Microsoft is pirating these files. It's irresponsible to use Windows at this point. You can go uncheck the folders in Onedrive, but they might just go ahead and check them again without your permission. Adobe took so much flak for something I personally find ever so slightly less egregious than this. MS also use this automatic Onedrive to scam senior citizens, because if the free storage fills up, they notify them they might "lose" their files if they don't pay for extra storage. Some seniors don't know the difference between their Onedrive and their harddrive and end up paying for storage, and literally thinking Microsoft held their files for ransom.

If files are searchable on their web app then they're not stored encrypted. And if you read the T&C of their web app, you'll see that they can consider opinions in your files to be immoral, and delete your account on that basis. So if you have a file containing an opinion they consider to be motivated by animosity, but you don't want it uploaded, and you don't cause it to be uploaded, you can still lose the account which you need to access your own hardware.

If you have purposely disabled your WiFi or LAN adaptor in Device Manager because you purposely wanted to be disconnected from the internet, for example, Windows Hello will turn it back on when the computer is re-started or cold booted. So scrub that as well. Then there is Bit Locker...the list goes on. Yes, it is of course still possible to navigate around all of these things but for how long.

This is absolutely shocking. Sensitive information is often legally required to be held securely in prescribed geographical limits. Sometimes America is not one of those locations where European data can be stored. Micro$oft may well be committing a crime by uploading such data to their servers. Additionally, information vital to national security may also be held on personal computers (whether that is wise or not). If a malicious agent (such as Russia or China) blackmailed or otherwise enticed a micro$oft employee to transfer such files to them, then that imposes a risk to the security of the West. Even if all micro$oft employees are vetted, there is still the potential of a state-backed hacker achieving the same ends. We must not allow the de facto out-sourcing of data protection of vital information to a private company such as Micro$oft.

It’s worse than you think. I worked for a charity helping disabled people with IT (we have all now retired). We switched to Linux after the problems with Millennium Edition throwing away the TCP-IP stack and found it worked well for our clients. Some years ago a client wanted windows so that’s what she got. She was sent a memory stick containing music, following the written instructions (which were perfect) she tried to copy it to her hard drive. The was then informed that the music had now been moved to her Microsoft cloud storage, she wasn’t aware she had such an account. We were called in to help but there was no trace of the music on her machine (we looked) and the memory stick was blank. Gone. Irreplaceable. She stayed with it, and we did try and trace her ‘cloud account’ but couldn’t find it. Windows 10 then tied itself in knots during an update and basically stopped working. She then accepted our original offer of Linux (and Libre Office). Never had another problem. Personally I refuse to deal with Microsoft systems, too much like working with Putin & Associates.

depends upon who made the program. You can find most of what you need in the "software" database that most installations have a program installed to access(in Zorin's case, it's just called "Software" but some have it listed by things such as add and remove programs or similar). If not, some programs come as files that you can execute if you allow them to and others you will have to compile (this is fairly rare now but most come with instructions). It's the ones without instructions where things get weird cuz then you have to look it up and the information may be out of date. I'm still dual booting at the moment. I'd love to do GPU passthrough using QEMU, but I only have 1 GPU, and my motherboard is a mATX board so my GPU covers up the other PCIe slot. So I have to dual-boot at the moment but it's rare that I have to. Linux is my daily driver and has been for over a month now. Games run great under Proton, even Elden Ring on my lowly AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX-1660 in Wayland. I'm running Arch Linux using Garuda KDE minimal edition. It meant I had to install all the gaming stuff myself, but at least I was able to control what was there without having all the extra bloat from the Dragonized edition of Garuda. I can run some apps in a VM, but some need full access to my CUDA cores and there isn't really a good alternative right now under Linux. Running in a VM, the app works, but when it's trying to process videos, it has to use the CPU instead of the CUDA cores. So what would take 30 minutes under bare-metal Windows takes over 2 hours using nothing but the CPU. Plus, I'd hate to do GPU pass-through for the GTX-1660 just to run games under QEMU. Not sure if that would be better or stick with Proton. I don't play multi-player games where the anti-cheat doesn't work under Linux as I mainly play single-player games. Linux has come a long way since the early days of the 90's when I first started using it. Back then, I played Doom and Quake and luckily, ports were made of those to run under Linux and they ran great. But these days, Proton has been awesome!

Some peopl have limited Internet usage per month. The activity of one drive might stop those people from doing important things. Like watching a video on cpr or uploading documents for school/university.

I really don’t know why the media is just now getting around to this topic. I had a secondary win 11 laptop since early last year that was sending my desktop to one drive. I had to rip out one drive and alter the registry to move the desktop folder back to the user directory, where it belongs.

Microsoft did this nonsense to me, which permanently made me a Linux user. I went into Linux figuring mastery would take about 10 years. Several months of reading, watching videos, trial and error, the computer I am typing this on is rock solid with Mint. I have 3.5 tb in my Steam library, nearly 100 percent of my games are smooth as butter. Going to try running Windows 10 in a virtual machine for any music software I can't get to work in Wine, that way I can quarantine my machine from Microsoft, or at least limit their access to the rest of my machine. Better yet, try running my music software in Windows 7 in a virtual machine. I'll have to try that, probably would work just fine.

I have an OLD Windows laptop. How can I install linux on it? Currently running Vista (IKR?). I am "upgrading" it to a newer version of windows, if that helps at all. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Try your distro of choice from a usb drive, it should give you an idea of how it runs.

I just reinstalled Windows on my work machine with scripts that happened during installation that stripped Windows down so much that it didn't even come with note pad, much less one drive.

funnily enough, that's probably because notepad can be rigged to run programs due to a "somewhat" recent change to windows. So, it's no longer just a text program.

You should never allow any program or Windows to tell you where to save your data. I have never saved to the default folders, so they can switch on OneDrive until they are blue in the face, but they will never be backing up my vital files to their cloud.

I have deliberately deleted one drive on several occasions. Even went to the site to remove everything. However it keeps coming back after their updates. It is incredibly annoying. And it’s very hard to restore your desktop after it has been transferred to one drive UPDATE Onedrive is back on my computer and my desktop is INSIDE onedrive now. There does not seem to be any way to actually get rid of it permanently.

I'm switching now, but am learning the hard-limitations of Linux with Wayland/no Wayland, and my NVIDIA graphics card (which I need). I'm still testing the limits (I only just heard about Wayland a week ago...), but I am stuck on dual-boot for a while.

no, just like i didn't consent to them putting my * ahem * *homework* folder on onedrive (as well as my ACTUAL homework) I actually have 2 decently sized drives, so them doing that is unnecessary and also kind of not okay. I also couldn't get my innapropriate content off of onedrive and when I did, it was gone forever (because cloud storage is a bitch)

I just installed Win 11 for a test. When I got to choose language and currency part I chose world currency. From there the shift F-10 oobe\bypassnbo trick worked. No ms account required. I unistalled one drive without problem, turned off the ads in settings. It was surprisingly easy. If people can't figure out how to do this, how are they going to get along in Linux?

Ran into an OEM HP laptop today that blocked Shift+F10, no way to bypass the online requirement. I had to use a custom ISO created via Rufus to create a local admin account off the bat and a fresh install of Windows. Still had to connect but bypassed the MS account requirement.

Try Shift+Fn+F10 since many laptops have the F-keys mapped to laptop functions by default.
