What was the Kanem Bornu Kingdom Known For? | Sankofa Pan African Series | History Of Kanem Bornu Kingdom |
The Kanem-Bornu Empire existed in areas that are now part of Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria. It was known to the Arabian geographers as the Kanem Empire from the 8th century AD onward and lasted as the independent kingdom of Bornu (the Bornu Empire) until 1900. The Kanem Empire (c. 700-1380) was located in the present countries of Chad, Nigeria, and Libya.
Watch this Episode as Dr. Bunmi sheds light on this intriguing kingdom.

With so much history, I wonder why all of this is totally non-existent in mainstream curricula. Thank you again for all of this information.

I've been saying this for years. History curriculum in African schools, especially Nigeria, needs a massive overhaul and update. We also need to start teaching African history to our children from a non Euro-centric, white washed perspective.

Part of neo-colonialism. African historians should start writing children's versions of the stories.

Christians never went on a crusade in Africa that was the first African Muslims. Im not mad at present day Muslims except in Mauritania who do modern day slavery. The colonist had something way more demonic in mind, and I would argue that it had nothing to do with forcing the population to become Christain.

Islam over 1K years before enslaved so many Africans that some nationalities, would deliberately disfigure themselves so they would be worthless. The Origin of the Kanem Bornu is the Saifuwa dynasty. Zaghawa was a client of the dynasty and not a major constituent part of the state. The people that can justify origin of Kanem Borno are the kanembu. The other clients were the Bulala, the Bagirmi, the wadai, the Tubu, the Arab Bagara, the Tawariq, and the Hausa. I know this because I'm a saifuwa myself!

@@dr.mmaudi8194 I think the confusion partly arises in medieval Arabic sources referring to early Kanem as "Zaghawa" or a branch of the "Zaghawa". The "Zaghawa" might have been a broader term to Arab geographers and chroniclers in the 800s and 900s than it is today. But the Hausa refer to the Kanuri as Beriberi, which could be a sign of "Beri" or Bideyat origins still remembered. But early Kanem seems to owe more to the Tubu/Teda peoples

So would the word Mai have been borrowed from the Kanuri? I am thinking of tribes in neighboring Cameroon borrowing many key words from the Fulani just as many tribes in neighboring Chad borrowed key words from Chadian Arabian. Many of these key words have to do with economy or religion and the borrowing shows the sharing of culture. Me, I grew up in Chad and have lived more than half my life there, and married a Chadian woman who is half Sara, half Arabic. So I have a rich perspective. And I actually travelled through Gombe many times during the 3 years that I went to high school in Jos. I first traveled through Gombe in 1972 when the wide, smooth, paved highway in that region was brand-new, it was beautiful, especially for me having put up with the bad roads in Chad in that era.
