Did You Know…
The gestation period for black rhinos is 15-17 months. When a female is preparing to give birth, she will find a solitary & sheltered place.
On the reserve, if we know one of the females is pregnant & we haven’t seen her for a while we know she may be about to give birth & keep an eye out for her in the days to come to ensure she & the calf are safe.
Black rhino calves stay with their mothers for 2-4 years before going off on their own, which is usually when the female is about to give birth again.
Once a newborn calf is around 6-8 months, the mom may allow her previous calf to rejoin her.
