I served for twelve years in the Corps. I was an 0331 in Viet Nam and finished up as a SSgt (8411) when I got out. Whenever someone thanks me for my service, I always reply, "It was an honor." because for me, it was. I know many veterans who are filled with regret that they didn't serve their twenty years and retire. I am filled with pride at the single greatest accomplishment of my life, having earned the title.

My Step Father was a WWII Marine. Joined the Corps in 1940. He would never talk of his experience until one night we were watching the movie Sands of Iwo Jima. It showed actual combat footage of the invasion of Tarawa. Then he began to tell me his experience on Tarawa. He was on the USS Saratoga on Dec 7th. They pulled into Pearl on Dec 15th; the fires were still smoldering. His back was broken while aboard the USS Saratoga. He was walking through a hatchway when a Japanese torpedo hit. He was thrown in the air and landed on his back, halfway through the hatch. All the male members of my family have served; two Marines, two Air Force, two Army, one Navy. I thank you all for your service.

My personal favorite is Art Buchwald. He tells the story of himself as an ordinance man. He dropped a live bomb in a hangar, but because he failed to arm it properly, it didn't detonate. His commanding officer told him he wasn't sure whether he should court martial him for his stupidity of dropping the bomb or commending him for his incompetence at improperly arming it.

We honor all who served...but you'll have to expect a certain bias when you watch a video made about Marines and made by a Marine. I'm sure there are plenty of Army videos out there you can watch too. I don't go there and post because I'm a Marine. And if I do watch a video about US soldiers I'm not going to be surprised it they're all gun ho about the Army.
@DIESEL0759
@DIESEL0759 6 жыл бұрын
+Robert Dore I respectfully disagree. A Marine's proper resting place is wherever the f*** he feels like. I worked with a very dear friend who was in the Army, but had fallen on hard times, and was homeless, driving a cab. When he passed, my co-worker, who knew him very well, asked me what she needed to do to get him a proper burial in a Veteran's Cemetery. I told her what to do, she did the legwork. At his funeral, all of the office workers went to his funeral, and I guided my friend on what was happening, and when to give me everything she was holding on to. When she asked if I was going to do the same, I informed her I would be buried with my parents. My father is a Marine, and he's in a civilian cemetery with my mother. I'll be joining him there. So, a Marine's proper resting place is wherever the f*** he feels like, just as are most things with Marines - wherever the f*** we feel like. Where does a Marine call home? Wherever the f*** he feels like calling home. Or, as AFT Marine would say, "If I'm standing on it, it's America!"

I had to smile at Tyrone Powers. He drilled regularly with a Marine Reserve unit, as a Major. When his unit shipped out, he found out and found transportation to intercept them. When his Hollywood associates wanted him on set, he was missing. After a huge hue and cry, he got tracked down. In a rare situation, he got threatened with court-martial if he did not leave the combat zone and return to the 48 to do publicity work. He was angry, but he went. Piece of trivia: he was one of the two best swordsmen in Hollywood, and therefore, one of the few Marine Officers able to use his sword in combat, if need be.

My Uncle Troy, a staunch Marine of WWll, served full time in the Korean War in the coldest weather ever. He then served in Vietnam as an aircraft mechanic for 18 months. By then, he was nine weeks from retirement. Again he returned to Vietnam for another 9 months because there was a shortage of helicopter mechanics! 10 months later he was fortunate to return to us. He retired to the California desert, humble and rarely spoke of his service. He reasoned that he never wanted to see a winter as cold as Korea and he did not like the jungles anymore. He earned many medals. He was a hero in Korea. Many wrote of his bravery and dedication to young Marines. I only knew this because of the "Stars and Stripes" newspaper. To me, he was my favorite Uncle because he woke up early with us kids. He taught us how to make breakfast out of nothing. He called it "Montana Gravy" on a "shingle" ( ie., toast) We enjoyed "picnics" for lunch as we camped out. Truly, he loved America and he inspired greatness in all of us. His son retired as a Naval Commander. His grandson is flying "Hornets" now, based out of Rhode Island. Uncle Troy loved his family and the Marines. He chewed on an unlit cigar as long as I can remember. Even in retirement, Marines from all over came to have that 5am cup of coffee with him. I dearly miss the twinkle in his eyes and the lessons about loving family. May God bless him and our young Marines! Hoorah!

Murph didn't need the USMC. He just needed a chance. I have a brother, an Ïrish twin," 10-1/2 months younger. He's huge. I'm not. We went different paths. I went merchant marine, he went with The Corps. I cannot do what he did - maybe. However, having loaded and cleared MILCARGO on several exercises, I want to say that when Army and Marine elements get into port, USMC "junk" is always ready - tires pressed up, chains off, engines running. And...GONE, when the ramps are down. They fight. The finest light infantry in the world, bar none. The things they do, just amazing. I will never try to gain reflected glory off my brother. I'm just amazed we have one in the family.

J. K. Sort of shamed himself? Actor Brian Dennehy claimed for years that he served a five-year tour as a Marine in Vietnam, where he was wounded in action. In reality, Dennehy's only Vietnam "action" was on-screen in "A Rumor of War", in which he portrayed a Marine gunnery sergeant. While Dennehy did serve in the Marines, it was not in Vietnam; his only "combat duty" was playing football in Okinawa in 1962.

found out about captain kangaroo from Lee Marvin on a late night talk show years ago. they were making a big to ,do about the fact that he was in a war zone in WWII. he just shrugged and said that there was another Marine on that beach that day . he was a Sargent standing up yelling at the men pinned down on the beach while bullets whizzed all around him. well his pep talk got those boys off the beach just in time for the next wave in to have a place to disembark and he said we would know this man as Captain kangaroo. also he mentioned another soldier that he had heard rumors about people down talking the man from the mister rogers show.. Mr. Marvin then went on to day that the reason Mr. rogers always wore long sleeves was to hide all of his tattoo's. he had been through 3 tours in Viet n Nam and a lot of that was behind enemy lines
