This branch of the U.S. military was at first created to deal with invasions from water and invading via the water, but the marines do a bit of everything now. In 1834, the marines became part of the U.S. navy, but they go back to 1775. Presently there are around 186,000 active members and 38,500 reserves. It’s the smallest of the seven U.S. uniformed services - by those we mean Navy, Army, Air Force, etc. There is also a special branch of the marine corps, which is the “United States Marine Corps Special Operations Command.” This command often deals with more covert operations. It’s all a bit confusing as the U.S. military is comprised of so many parts, but we’ll help explain everything. Welcome to this episode of the Infographics Show, 50 Shocking Facts about US Marines.

Makes a significant difference. We also had peq16s. Finally true reformation is happening and the grunts are getting even better gear. When the US Marine Barracks was bombed in Lebanon, I felt the loss too. My grandfather was a US Marine in WW2. I go to his grave often. I hope we still have a few of the WW2 veterans still alive. You don’t have to be a US citizen. I joined when I was still a green card holder and got my citizenship after getting wounded from Iraq. Pres. Bush was personally at my oath taking to become a US Citizen at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Here how it happened: I got wounded in Iraq and I was already medevac to US. After going though my 5th surgery for my blown up shoulder. Some Naval officer came to my room and told me that there was a VIP coming to visit us in 2 days and asked me if I have any request. Since I am still groggy from meds and probably still high, I told him I have no idea and asked him what did the other wounded marines wish was. He told me, one wanted to meet Jennifer Aniston and one who has been a marine for 25 years asked for us citizenship. I didn’t think of it too seriously because I just wanted to be left alone with some morphine because I just had a bone graph. I told him that I myself is not yet a US citizen and it would make me feel complete US Marine if I become a citizen. He wrote that down and left. If you guys want to know what happened next just goggle: Lcpl Oj Santamaria Daly City US Marine Citizenship. I am proud to have paid for my US citizenship in sweat, blood and tears.

My Father served 33 years in the Marine Corp. One combat tour in Korea and two combats tours in Vietnam. The Marines are the red headed step child of the military services. Hand me downs are what they get from the Army and Navy for the most part. But the Marines know how to adapt and overcome. Every piece of equipment (Tanks, Trucks, Artillery etc.) they have received as a hand me down, they have made improvements to and have adapted to their specific mission. The M60 tank is a classic example of that adaptation. During the Gulf war of 1991, the Marines used what others called an obsolete platform and made it work to great effect. The Marine Corp Motto is Semper Fedelis, Latin for Always Faithful! The second Marine Corp motto is, Adapt and Overcome!

I was wondering about that. When I was "in" (1965/70) we traveled wearing our tropicals (and yes, the long sleeve shirts were made of wool) and by the time we got to our destinations we looked like an unmade bed. Maybe it's time to rethink this. We also couldn't leave base unless our shirt had a collar on it.

To other Marines and service members I might be inclined to say that I'm a Marine, since they'd likely know what I mean, but to a civilian I feel that it's easier to say that I'm a former Marine to say that I'm a Marine but no longer serving.

Respects from the Army Airborne. Why did you not cover Recon and Raiders as part of MSOC? BTW, at the strength you mention, almost everyone is combat arms. All other support functions (incl medic) are provided by the Navy. So you may regard a Marine the same as a Ranger or a PJ. It takes more than 20 support people to put each one of them in battle. Our Warriors were the tip of the spear, but the modern battlefield is no longer survivable by infantry and specops casualties are always high.

Warren Lawrence you’re literally 15 what could you possibly know about the US marines? Considering marines are single handedly the best branch of the 4 branches we have lol and 5% is actually very false more like 15% see combat even if you’re a POG which most the brits actually are POGS lmao not my fault Americans are pretty great

Making that Marine hold an umbrella over Obama was a disgrace.

Python - The day I saw that my days of supporting Obama ended. For the Commander in Chief not to know parodical is an insult. One of the first things we were taught in Bootcamp was “If the Corps wanted you to have a umbrella they’d issue you one”. THEY DIDN’T. I watched Ms. Lucy Baines Johnson hold one over a Presidential Crew/Chief in 1968 in a torrential downpour on the White House lawn because she had brought one out to him and he explained to her he couldn’t, but thanked her. She stood there with him till the visitor returned and held that umbrella. His name was Cpl. James Bowling, Camden Ohio. She could give lessons to people on what a real LADY is!

244 years of service to our great nation. World wars, non-combatant evacuations, keeping our embassies safe. 244 years of distinguished Marine Corps history and all you can come up with is a moment when a Marine held an umbrella. Move on brother, don't steer by your wake.

Everything on the Marine Dress Blue uniform has some deeper meaning, symbolism or purpose beyond the obvious. For example, the collar is high and rigid, not as high as the old "leatherneck" collars which gave us the nickname, but in that style. There are 7 belt loops, for each of the 7 seas. There are 13 buttons, one for each of the colonies. The trousers and blouse are two different colors, representing the largest 2 oceans we have dominion over, the Atlantic and Pacific, and much much more....

Ive struggled with PTSD since 2010 and I can tell you first hand its not easy. Veterans or anyone reach out for help if you need it please. It doesnt make you weak. It makes you stronger for being able to admit you need help. One suicide is too many let alone 22 a day.

I've had PTSD since 1969, it wasn't called that back and we had zero support. Fifty-thousand military died in Viet Nam, ten years after the war another 50 thousand killed themselves. Read that in a sof book.

I'm not from the US, but the Marines get's massive respect from little old Denmark. As we are slowly increasing our spending there have been talks about a possible Marine like unit in the future as well. I also hope you guys eventually get the help you deserve, it's a problem here too, my uncle was in Kosovo and they were not even that many. He got zero help, the best he got was a picture of him in a newspaper as he mounted his ACP with his friends. Keep fighting the good fight. I would have joined the army myself (I know Marines aren't army, but we ain't got marines here) probably as armored infantry as they seem to be the tough guys here, but my epilepsy got in the way sadly.

I would've thought Denmark would've had it's own Marines given your rich Viking history & the impact it's had on shaping your culture! A country so well known for it's extremely skilled & feared, seafaring warrior ancestry should no doubt have at least 1 division of it's own Marines today! Semper Fidelis!

In the Marines, you're only a Sergeant if you're an E-5. When you're an E-6 you're a Staff Sergeant, E-7 you're a Gunnery (Gunny) Sergeant and so on. DO NOT CALL ANY MARINE E-6 AND ABOVE SERGEANT OR YOU WILL GET YOUR HEART POPPED!!

When i was in boot camp i had the chance to ask my senior when did they have time to eat since we never saw any of our drill instructors eat. He told me and i quote "The thing that kept us fueled up was your guys fear and honey buns washed down with some monster". The only time i laughed while i was in boot and it was the best laugh.

This better have been after getting your EGA (when they talk to you like humans) because anyone I know would have been slayed asking a question like that. I guess there were rare Senior DI days where they'd talk to us like humans (probably for mental health) where you could get away with it.

As a paralyzed disabled veteran of the US Army, I'm not too proud to say that the US Marines are way tougher. But they have to be. They are the first to go in any military situation. But the 82nd Air Bourne Division isn't far behind the US Marines. But if you say that any branch of service is better over the other, no. We are all brothers in the US Military. When the US Marines Barracks was attacked in Lebanon, my heart felt as if someone ripped it out. And if the President would have let the rest of the US Military to respond, oh you can believe we're head hunting for those responsible. The only time you'll find the Army rooting against Navy is the Army / Navy football game that's played yearly. Win or lose, we salute each other.
