Didier Drogba's momentous final kick in Chelsea's 2012 Champions League run demands a deep rewind

The sheer finality of Didier Drogba's penalty kick after extra time of the 2012 Champions League Final is ... a lot. Everyone knew it would end his stint at Chelsea. Everyone knew it was the closing act of a great Chelsea era that had already been crumbling.
To really appreciate that final, climactic moment ... yeah, you guessed it, we've gotta rewind. You need to know how much Bayern Munich and their goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, went through to reach that Champions League Final. You need to understand how last season and this season went for each of these teams. And above all else, you need to measure the multiple overlapping histories building toward this moment for the protagonist, Drogba: His history with Chelsea, his history in the Champions League Final, and his history with penalty kicks. All those threads form one big, taut rope of history, and the moment you're about to see had the potential to tie that rope in a perfect, conclusive knot.

The pen was crazy but for me the iconic moment of this game will always be Drogba's equaliser. It epitomised him as a player - aggressive, precise, and dominant.

This just reminds us that had we lost, praise for Drogba's incredible equaliser would have died down between the memories of game changing errors he has made in finals, both 2008 and 2012. Cech did damage control and ensured we won the final and put us in a position where we could appreciate the Chelsea legend, Drogba. Drogba being associated with the UCL 2012 final as the hero of the match is owing to Cech's consistent efforts.

As an ivorian, i won't lie. I cried watchung it live. And i had some silent tears once again watching that video. Drogba is a total hero here. And thzt kick meant soo much for us that have supported him all these years withour ever winning an international club or national team competition. It meant soo much. Two things that never made sense to me, and one that still haunts me. Don't understand: 1- Bayern coach taking Müller out of the match, specially since Van Buyten sucks. 2- Robben being chosen for that penalty in Extra Time. Moment that haunts: - Bastian hitting the post on his penalty.

Chech was a silent hero. He saved so many penalties that would make Chelsea lost. He saved penalty against Messi in Semifinal. And Robben in Final.

A great one would would be the 1989 Liverpool-Arsenal game for the First Division title. The two teams playing each other with a make-up game from the after effects of Hillsborough. Yes, some pretend that English club football didn't exist until 1992, but this one would be perfect.

When Seth was talking about the pressure Neuer was under to save the Drogba penalty, it was also important to remember that two seasons prior, Bayern lost 2-0 against Inter in the Final. The biggest club in Germany doesn't sit well with losing two Finals in three seasons.

That Africa Cup of Nations final in 2012, only briefly hinted at in your video, would also make for a great Rewind: Zambia not only winning the title for the first time ever, as rank outsiders, but winning it in Gabon of all places - the country where, twenty years earlier, nearly the complete Zambian national team had perished in a plane crash. The players' singing during the penalty shoot-out alone is amazing.

Drogba is a legendary player, one of if not thee greatest big game player in the history of football. as a Chelsea fan I'll never be able to not have shivers when I see this kick, after constant heartbreaking failures from a slip to a referring disgrace that 2012 final is probably my happiest football memories especially because that context.

The ref screwed both tho. Possible handball in first half for Barca and red card to Abidal although he didnt touch Anelka. But yes, Chelsea got screwed most due numerous penalty call and that last minute possible hand ball from Eto'o But Chelsea also at their own fault, they simply not clinical enough at that match and allowing last minute goal instead

One of the craziest stories ever in football. Such good memories from that day. Drogba, Lampard, Terry and Cech, it would be a shame if they hadn't won the CL. It wasn't with beautiful football like Chelsea played a few years back, but a win is a win.

I really appreciate SB doing a Rewinder video on this CL final and football in general. I really think Seth and SB did a nice job on a lot of the video (great storytelling of the final, terminology was spot on), but feel like there were quite a few missed opportunities. Much for the context of the Napoli fixture (the 2nd leg was RDMs first CL match and he had to overturn a 2 goal deficit) and the Barcelona fixture (Ramires’s chip, history of 2009 semi final) was omitted or glossed over in this video but played a big part in what makes this CL run so special for Chelsea. And not sure if this is a copyright issue but can’t believe a clip of the “DROGBAAAAA” call by Martin Tyler wasn’t included. Anyways, that’s just my 2c. I’m sure with video length restrictions and other things, the team has to make tough decisions on prioritization. Hope to see more football and CL videos in the future!

Drogba Legend. I still get chills, and maybe even tears, every time I see that glorious header and that wonderful penalty. Chelsea, champions of Europe twice now, both when no one thought we could possibly win.
