‪@BMDPortraits‬ shares a realistic colored pencil drawing challenge using Crayola Colors of the World Colored Pencil. We all know that Crayola is a kid's grade brand and therefore it is not a very popular brand to be used in realistic colored pencil portraiture. But on this drawing video i will try to put Crayola colored pencil to an extreme test by using it in drawing realistic skin tone. Forget about Faber Castell Polychromos, or Caran D' Ache Luminance or Prismacolor but i wanna challenge myself in an extreme experiment of drawing hyper realistic skin tone using cheap, kid's grade colored pencil. This drawing video with colored pencils is done entirely using the English Language to reach more beginners and young artists around the world and hopefully help them find colored pencils that are high quality but are affordable and can produce great output.

It's not about the tool or brand, but it's how you use it and your current skill level in art. ☺️

Also, sadly the light fastness isn't great. I use Crayola for practice, but not for commissions since the colors will fade.

I love my professional sets but this crayola colors of the world is really good. I use them all the time to practice because just like you said you really don't have to think about it, you just look at the reference and grab a color that is close then follow the tonal values they give you and vary it a little here and there in the color zones of the face (yellow, red, gray/green). They really layer well. If they made a professional version like this that was lightfast I would be the first in line to get it.

i agree, if this kids grade is already nice, what more if they produce artist grade version

I learned how to use pencil crayons with Crayola. Also, when these first cam out, I heard that they had collaborated with a makeup production company to get the closest tones they possibly could to people's actual skin. When I heard that all I could think was how much I wished Prismacolour would do that! I use so many non-traditional colours to build skin tones that it would save a lot of time and money lol. This turned out beautifully just like your work always does! I still think I'll stick to my prismas. I may eventually get a few polychromos eventually, because I'm a sucker for unnecessarily detailed work, and it would help with the small sections, but I'm poor and polychromos are expensive in Canada. I am not using the best paper though. I may try your clear gesso trick!

Although a good driver can get more out of a ferrari than they can a civic. (edit: I'm just saying that the better the tool, the easier a time the professional has at getting the desired result. I'm speaking from experience with a paper that was so terrible I nearly gave up watercolour painting entirely lol.)

I am not an artist in the strictest of terms. I am an adult colorist, who colors images that others have drawn. Although, I am working my way towards doing my own images. It’s just going to take a little time. I have been doing this for a solid 6 years now, plus a little. I LOVE my PrismaColor and Polychromos. However, I started out using regular Crayola pencils. The 50 color set and then later I got the 100 color set. I have to say that it use to upset me when people said that Crayola pencils couldn’t layer, blend, etc. because I was doing those things with them within a fairly short period of time. It took me a long time to understand that everyone colors differently and with different pressures….That some people HATE layering….and Crayola pencils DO require layering. I have used 10-15 layers depending on what I am doing and that was on smooth Neenah paper. When I used a toothier paper, used probably 20 or more. In my opinion, Crayola pencils are actually MUCH better than most people realize or understand. Of course, they aren’t lightfast. So, if you are doing commissions, they wouldn’t work. If you are just coloring in a coloring book, a PDF or are just practicing, they really are good pencils….one just has to learn how to use them…AND yes, while I do love my better quality pencils, I still use my Crayola pencils, quite a bit!
