The "HIT ME" was an invitation to the haters and guess what no one has ever responded.

Back then RM got comments from underground artists that he’s not a rapper and he can’t keep the flow. Dude basically made a song “Joke” to make fun of his haters, proving he can rap any flow (the rap’s speed gets faster as song progresses). And there’s one line that basically sums the whole song up: “this us meaningless worldplay” RM just made a song in a stile that many rappers at that time made songs - without any deep meaning. So he is in a way proving - no matter what a lyrics I write I’m still better than y’all haters. Lastly the “HIT ME” is him challenging his haters (those in the industry mocking him) to respond to him in rap. And NO ONE EVER RESPONDED 🔥

This song is called Joke because RM is mocking his haters and other rappers who are thinking rapping fast makes them a good rapper. But they don't have good lyrics or the lyrics doesn't even make sense. They are just doing mumbel rap. Here is a line where he talks about it directly: "Day or night, fucking industries, you’re a bastard who can’t even rap more than three characters Bibidi babidi bubidi babidi, nimini namini jikimi jakam" I don't know if this is true but in this line I think he meant the other six members in BTS who are always supporting him:" Got six bullets in my tongue, Six snakes in my lung, Six shots got me feeling 2Pac"

Yoongi and Namjoon were highly respected underground rappers before they debuted in BTS. People were saying they weren't real rappers anymore and criticized them heavily. This song is, quite literally, a joke. This song is RM saying that he can do the rap game 50x better than everyone else even with completely nonsense lyrics.

The beat is sampled from Run the Jewels - Oh my darling. The subtitles showed it very briefly at the beginning. This song was from RM's first mixtape and as is custom with rap mixtapes, you sample or use other's beats to display your rap. RM explained mixtapes were meant to be low-cost ways to showcase your rap and get your name out there so sampling was common. That's why their early mixtapes were free. However now that their "mixtapes" use more and more music they themselves produced or songs commissioned by producers they chose, they now call them albums and release them officially. BTS produce much of their own stuff (especially suga) but they also rely on their companies producers and work with outside producers they like too! RM actually said with indigo, he no longer produces anymore because his talent lies more in songwriting and he prefers to let others produce the beats now.

When he first started BTS, he received a lot of hate from all of those other underground rappers and interviews calling him a “Fake Rapper” because he debuted in a idol group. This song is basically for those rappers.

He was reaaally mad. Also RM left the beat open in the end so if some one dare to reaply to him and none dared to till now

In the beginning of their career, both RM and Suga, were underground rappers RM was going against rappers older than him and he was winning against them, so when they decided to be part of BTS they received a lot of hate, not only from the underground rappers because "they sell themselves and become Idols ", but also from Idols because their company was a small one without any coneccions and in the blink of bankruptcy. The same older rappers who lost countless times against RM (and I'm sure also reapoff Suga with his music) were the same who were saying that they couldn't really rap, that they didn't have good diction, that they stuttered, that they didn't had a good flow or good lyrics, and from Idols that they didn't had talent or the good looks (the face, the eyes, the hairstyle... in here also were trying to insult JHOPE too). So in some of their solo songs ,the Cyphers and rap line, they respond to lots of hate from all over the place. And at the end of this song RM said Hit me and so far nobody has responded. And now after 10 years (13 if we count the almost 3 years RM, Suga and J-Hope spent together as trainees) they stop caring about the hate . So, yes , right until this day, they, BTS and each of the members, receive a lot of hate from other artists, companies and their fandom. Some of the latest are comments against Jin and his enlistment, JHOPE and his Jack in the box album, RM'S Indigo album, Jimin's Face album, Jung-kook and his tattoos and his lives and Tae-hyung is currently being mass reported on his Insta account because he is the kpop/ Asian person with more followers , so yeah they are hated for just existing.

There were some underground rappers “interviewing” Suga and RM. They were incredibly disrespectful and basically saying they weren’t real rappers for leaving the underground rap scene and becoming k-pop idols. Idk if that was a result of the birth of this song but I like to think so 😁. ALL the boys were pissed off about this and rightfully so. RM and Suga even more due to the fact they were getting direct shots. BTS in general got a great deal of disrespect in the beginning but they overcame it, persevered, and ARMY is so proud of them. 💜😊

You are spot on 4:09 RM received a lot of hate when he first started with BTS. To put into perspective, he is very well known and been fear within the underground rap scene in Korea but when he debuted, everyone turn their back and bash him. Saying him a sell out, not a real rapper etc. This is his reply to all those haters & doubt him. RM can go really hard, he is very savage but nowadays he put a layer to it and choose growth and be matured. Also, the members did say that RM is hip hop. He is everything about rhythm and poetry. RM has never made another track like Joke. It is not that he can't, he just chooses not to. And that is what he displayed to the other rappers who disrespected him and Suga, 'I can rap hardcore and flow fast but I don't need to show off and prove anything to you.' Some fake-ass "rappers" who don't understand what rap is really about were dissing him that he isn't a rapper because he's not rapping fast enough (yeah, they're a bunch of ignorants). He usually isn't but it's by choice - it just doesn't fit his usual style and his lyrics. To shut them up he wrote this (famously, in 15 minutes) and titled it "Joke" to prove that he can and that even if his song is made in a "sloppy" manner in a matter of minutes as a joke, it's still better and more relevant than anything they've ever done, so they're the real "joke" here. He's still waiting for any response from them😆.

Suga and RM were in the underground rap scene from 13 years old. All their friends were rappers who turned on them when they joined BTS saying they were girls for wearing makeup and weren't rappers anymore. Yes they were pissed.

At that time RM's friends who were underground rappers were looking down on him and saying he wasn't "hiphop" anymore... Many other underground rappers were saying the same thing so he made his mixtape to express how he felt about those people and the bullshit they were saying. I used to listen to korean underground rappers before listening to kpop but honestly just seeing how close minded they were threw me off. Especially because these rappers will show respect to someone like Jay Park (he used to be in a kpop group but then got kicked out and went solo) when Jay Park is also a kpop artist (yes he is mainly k-hiphop but he still does pop songs and mainstream songs like he did with IU so don't come at me lol). Also the same thing with G-Dragon... he is a kpop artist and is in a kpop group but he was still respected by underground rappers and probably because he was already really famous. (Sorry if my english is bad I'm french lol and also no hate to GD or Jay Park, I love Bigbang and I love Jay Park's music. I just needed to say all of this because I always found it so dumb that they treated RM and Suga differently just because they weren't big yet)

RM borrowed most of the beats for his first mix tape. This is a Run the Jewels beat. This whole song is a “joke” it’s just stream of conscience wordplay. Other KRappers gave the rapline a hard time for going the “Idol” route. RM showed that he can rap fast, while calling out fast rappers whose raps have no meaning. Most of his other songs are a bit more topical than this, which is just for fun. I think Do You is a more representative RM rap, since he has mad flow, while also making good, thoughtful, uplifting points.

You should do reactions to the MV first and the lyrics video after. It's a lot to take in, watching the M/V and reading the subtitles and listening to a foreign language all at once.. separating them makes it clearer. You could see the video and then focus the lyrics... :) with rap I find it difficult if I don't understand the lyrics, because so much of the beauty of rap sits in the wordplay and lyricism. And Korean is such a beautifully complex language.. like.. imagine listening to Eminem if you don't understand english... it still sounds great, but once you make sense of what he is saying and how he is saying it.. then you are truly blown away..
