Fun fact: When Fleming was searching for a name for the protagonist in his spy novels, he wanted an 'ordinary' unassuming name. When in Jamaica, he saw the name of the author to a book entitled 'A Field Guide to Birds'. His name was James Bond. The rest is history.

While we're at it, Q's name is Boothroyd which is the name of an arms expert who wrote to Fleming suggesting that OO7 would be better off using a Walther instead of a Beretta. Fleming adapted it into Dr No and now I'm wondering if he really created these stories or just wrote down his dreams...
@briangonigal3974

@@wolfiebassache4146 …and, just to get even deeper into the woods, in the Dr. No movie, we see a character identified as “Boothroyd” (played by some random actor) give Bond his Walther PPK, but then from Russia With Love on we have Desmond Llewelyn playing a Character identified only as “Q” giving Bond his gadgets. It’s not until The Spy Who Loved Me when Barbara Bach greets Q as “Major Boothroyd!” That we finally get onscreen confirmation that in the movie Bond Universe Q and Dr. No’s Boothroyd are indeed supposed to be the same person.

In the DVD Special Features the Ice Palace is discussed. It was inspired by a ice hotel in Sweden that has to be rebuilt every year. It's goofier than _Moonraker_ & hasn't aged well, but released months after 9/11, _DAD_ was precisely the escapist fantasy audiences needed it to be in 2002. That's why it was Broz's highest gro$$ing outing. In the end, Broz didn't fail the franchise, the franchise failed Broz - and he deserves every respect for bringing Bond back to life from uncertainty & irrelevancy in 1995. More Brosnan, watch: _The Matador_ (2005) - amazing, hilarious movie, might be Broz's best non-Bond performance.

This movie pays homage to the old movies, as you noticed. At the Subway station you can spot several gadgets, including the AcroJet from Octopussy’s opening scene. The plot itself is inspired in the diamond’s laser weapon from Diamonds Are Forever. And the escape from the Super Cargo at the end came straight from The Living Daylights (only there using a car instead of a helicopter). It’s the end of the larger than life characters and fantasy toned plots. Now the franchise will be rooted on reality. Casino Royale is the best of the following entries. A boring Q and a charmless Moneypenny are included. And Mr. Brosnam never disguised his disapointment to be released out of the series, that was suposed to give him a last movie to do. Bárbara Broccolli, daughter of the legendary original 007 franchise producer Albert Broccoli, said goodbye to Pierce by the phone. As he said in one interview, he was “booted out” of the role. As I said before, he was the last of the classy Bonds.

@@robertsmith3883 While rebooting bond might not have been a bad idéa in principle. The original bond series, specially the first couple of movies is a bit messy, the way it was done with Craig wasn´t it. They pretend to make it smarter, while actually making it dumber.

I'm so glad you took the time to watch all the movies leading up to this, and thereby recognized the callbacks to older movies in the franchise. I've seen a few KZfaqrs do reactions to the James Bond series and far too many of them can't be bothered to put the homework in so they'll only watch one or two movies from each Bond era or not even watch some of the older movies and it means that, when they get to this point in the series, easter eggs go over their heads. Great stuff, when it comes to Die Another Day I feel a lot of Bonds fans come full circle. Love it as a kid, grow to resent it as 'cheesy cringe' when they get older and are trying to be oh so grown up and mature then in their later years just learn to embrace the goofiness. If I had to put my finger on the main issue I think people have with the film is the tonal whiplash. The opening of the film, with Bond getting tortured for 14-months and M throwing him to the dogs took James to a very dark place and for a moment you think this finial film of Brosnan will dive into a real character study, a real look at who Bond is and building on some of those darker moments we saw in the previous films but instead as you yourself recognised, he gets cleaned up and he's back to smoove Bond again as though none of the opening had even happened and you find yourself feeling you've been messed around with and let down. Going forward I highly approve of your list, when it comes to Austin Powers the first film be sure to watch the UK version of the film rather than the US one if you can as it had extra scenes including my fav Bond parody joke of the movie that I won't spoil here of course. ;) One last thing, AFTER you have finished all the Craig Bond movies I strongly recommend you check out the Johnny English spy parody films staring Rowan Atkinson. The first film in the trilogy is just 'okay' in my opinion but the second film in the series, Johnny English: Reborn, that came out in 2011, is very much a loving parody of the modern Craig Bond era and I think it's both funnier and has a genuine good and gripping story in it's own right than the Austin Powers films.

Hit the nail on the head. I feel robbed watching this movie because the first act is phenomenal. Then its just back to business as usual. Its like the writers wanted to subvert the Bond tropes while simultaneously being 100% guilty of them. I'd be happy to watch the first act as part of a different film, and the second and third act as part of a different film. But put them together and it's such a let down. I enjoy the movie now because I know what's coming, but the first time I was like. What? We're just dropping all this brilliant set up?

I really liked that one. It was funny that it had TWO English cars in it, the Jaguar and Aston Martin, the reason for this was that the fans at the time went crazy when Bond drove a German car in the previous movie (the BMW) as Bond has ALWAYS driven British cars. You nailed it with the Moonraker comparison. That’s how I enjoy Die Another Day as well. It's completely over the top with no limits on the fantasy. After Moonraker, Bond was brought back to earth in a story much more grounded in reality. The producers also went back to Bond's roots with several scenes in For Your Eyes Only being lifted directly from Ian Fleming's work. Something similar happened after Die Another Day as well. The producers finally acquired the rights to the first Fleming book, and the time was right to hit the reset button with a faithful film adaptation of Casino Royale.

Your reaction to all these Bonds have dawned a new perspective on me. The entire Brosnan era is a parody, or to be more accurate, a commentary on all previous Bonds mixed in one. Lady M and Money Penny just being sick and tired of his "misogynistic ways" is that clear commentary. I probably wouldn't have noticed without you saying things like "this Bond has more quips than Moore." It really made me think about every aspect from the intro music to the dialogue. All the Brosnan films have this layer of cheese laced throughout that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Even the intro music is over the top. I think this Madonna song was the last contemporary song used since License to Kill. All Bond music is contemporary of it's time from Connery to Dalton until Golden Eye when it started to sound like "classic Bond" music from the Connery era. It's all been throwback music since Brosnan because they were kinda making fun of it. The Daniel Craig era leans hard into it being throwback music when it's not supposed to be. Can't wait for Casino Royale. It's the best in the Craig movies imo. Number one is still License to Kill but Casino Royale comes a split hair second.

It's rumoured that Sophie Ellis Bexter was originally intended to provide the theme song, but that plan was dropped when Madonna approached the producers, and declared that she wanted to write and perfrom the theme. And she wanted a cameo role in the film. But she insisted her character be a lesbian, so Bond would have no 'sexual power' over her... Amazingly, instead of saying "Thanks Madge, don't call us, we'll call you," the producers got all starstruck and caved in to all her demands. The result was one of the worst Bond themes ever (in my humble opinion) and a cameo that - when I saw this film at the cinema back in 2002 - caused most the audience to laugh out loud.

Honestly, this one was always one of my favorite bond movies. It definitely uses more weapons and gadgets than any other bond movie which was probably too much for some people, but I always enjoyed uses of cool technology in movies. Brosnan is an amazing Bond as always and just like in "Tomorrow never dies" the bond girl is actually doing cool and relevant things instead of just looking nice and falling in love with Bond. I also like the title theme, but you are definitely right when you say that this feels less like a bond theme than any other before. This is not just a feeling, it's true, because there are a few elements in the melody of james bond themes that are used in all bond songs, except for this one. Even if the other bond songs can sound quite different, they all have this common main theme that this song hasn't. And finally, keep in mind that the bond movies with Daniel Craig are basically a restart of the entire bond story. This means, while Brosnan bond still has to deal with the death of his wife, Craig bond hasn't because the older bond movies are not part of his past.

This was technically the first Bond movie in theaters I saw. The movie my sister and I were seeing finished earlier than this so my parents brought us in right around when Graves goes into the engine. It has its moments like the opening, Bond’s sword fight in London and John Cleese’s Q scene. Overall it’s a letdown overall with a number of issues, my biggest being the Bond Girls. Despite everyone saying how great Jinx is I don’t really see the appeal as unlike Wai Lin she never felt like Bond’s equal (ie needing him to frequently save her) and the dialogue they gave Halle Berry was pretty bad. As for Frost although she’s my favorite villainous Bond Girl and Rosamund Pike does a good job with her first big movie role (thankfully her career survived this) in hindsight her motivations for turning traitor are weak, it kind of was obvious she was going to be a bad guy and after the reveal it seems her only role is set up and fight in a cat fight.

10:20 - GUIDE TO BIRDS - Ian Fleming took the name for his character from that of the American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbean bird expert and author of the definitive field guide Birds of the West Indies. Pay close atttention to this outing, Agent Murray, there are many 'callbacks' to previous movies in the series.

@10:16 When Ian Fleming was living in Jamaica and was about to write a novel about a British secret agent, he needed a name for him. On his shelf was, "A Field Guide to Birds: West Indies. It was written by a man named James Bond. Ian Fleming thought it sounded right for his spy and this moment in the film is a reference to those in the know. P.S. Years later, Ian Fleming met with James Bond who told him he was honored to share a name with the most famous spy in fiction.

So many references in this one: Bond was being recorded the same way as in From Russia..., the Jinx Bikini same as in Dr No, the Title of the book was the actual writer named James Bond, the gadgets were obvious references (the alligator from Octopussy, the shoe, etc), the parachute was the same as The spy..., the laser from goldfinger... and maybe there are a couple more I'm too lazy to recall... 😅 Maybe that was the best of this movie: the references and the nostalgia. Edit: ohhh yeah and the bad guy uses the sun just like in the man with the golden gun, and the henchmen were sucked out of the plane the same way Goldfinger was, Jinx and Bond final escape was very similar to the one on The livingDL...

you can find a reference to every single Bond movie as it was the 40th anniversary of the franchise (from the objects behind Q in the lab (the Octopussy crocodile, the acrostar jet, the case and shoe from Russia w Love), to the studded tires from Living Daylights, the laser from Diamonds are forever, etc. Although the song is a bop it doesnt fit the movie's tone as it plays over Bond's torture scene. It is definitely the darkest pre-title sequence ever w Bond getting captured and tortured for over 1yr. He's never been that banged up, nor worn a beard, nor had an actual sex scene before, illustrating a less glamourous/suave hookup. This is the in-world explanation of how Bond was out of action during 9/11. Explaining why although it sets up serious/dark stories beats, it gets outlandish in the 2nd half as escapism for the collective grief of the real world at the time. Hence why its aged so poorly without context. Although a fun popcorn movie at the time, I wished they had instead followed through w the innovative storylines they set up at the beginning (e.g. Bond questioning if he's lost it, having to prove he's not paranoid, dealing w shifting geopolitics he's not in-line with)

Another piece of trivia to add to the others - Toby Stephens (son of national treasure and acting legend Maggie Smith, and the wonderful Robert Stephens) is the only actor to play both a Bond villain and Bond himself. He portrayed JB in a series of radio plays for the BBC. Well worth a listen, as they feature co-stars including David Suchet and Ian McKellen. Rosamund Pike (Miranda) also portrayed Pussy Galore in the adaptation of 'Goldfinger'.

The villain Gustav Graves was played by Toby Stephens, the son of Dame Maggie Smith, Professor Minerva McGonigle in Harry Potter, and the late Robert Stephens, a Shakespeare and film actor who played Sherlock Holmes. Toby has done a lot of great film and TV roles...'Black Sails' (series), 'Jane Eyre', 'Twelfth Night', and 'Mangal Pandey: The Rising' are all good Toby Stephens projects. Miranda Frost was played by Rosamund Pike, who got a lot of raves for her role in 'Gone Girl' with Ben Affleck. She was also wonderful in 'Pride and Prejudice' with Keira Knightley, playing the eldest Bennet sister. Currently, she is playing Moiraine Damodred and executive producing the Amazon Prime series 'The Wheel of Time' based on the Robert Jordan fantasy novels. She plays an Aes Sedai sorceress helping the young heroes prepare for a coming battle against darkness. Hands down...this has the worst Bond Theme song inside the official EON Productions films...although 'Quantum of Solace' is a very close second! On to one of the best Bond films ever...'Casino Royale'....and I love that you're gonna do 'Austin Powers'!!!

I think the first half of this movie is actually really strong. It goes off the rails fast in the second half. I’ve seen all the Bond movies dozens of times but I think I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve made it the whole way through this one. I like that this is the only film in the series where the title sequence advances the plot.

Since this was the Bond movie celebrating the series' 40th anniversary, I've always thought that the first half of the film is reflecting the Connery and Dalton eras, while the second half is deliberately playing homage to the Moore era.

James Bond films are always a mixture of camp and action/adventure. And definitely for the 20th film in the franchise they threw in a lot of Easter Eggs that hint back at older films, like Jinx's bathing suit and the jetpack from Thunderball.

This movie was the 20th film and celebrated the 40th year of the series. For these reasons, the creative team put in at least one callback to every previous Bond movies. A couple of examples,: in the Cuban clinic Brosnan picks a grape just like Connery in Thunderball. The boat that Jinx flees the clinic is the same type as Cigar girl in The World is Not Enough. Bond and his lady escaping from the hold of a crashing plane is a call back to The Living Daylights. One more for the road, Agent Chang filming Bond behind the mirror in the hopes of catching him in the act with one of his agents arks back to From Russia with Love.
