Ah Goldfinger, the Bond movie where they finally cracked the formula for decades afterward. Cold open mission, big musical intro, briefing with M, flirting with Moneypenny, gadget briefing with "Q", taunting the villains through multiple encounters, villain henchman. Pretty much all the pieces are here now. You can't quit Bond now, gotta watch them all!

It was only the 3rd film. But it was a phenomenon within the phenomenon. Good story, theme song, dialogue, villains, girls, action, sexiness, etc. 007 was a much bigger number than before. This was when it truly became a franchise. Blockbuster-wise, theaters stayed open 24 hrs just to keep the crowds pleased. Product-wise; clothes, cars, cologne or anything that was connected to Bond was being sold like crazy. For the James Bond establishment on film, it set the bar even higher.

It's interesting to note that No. 1, the head of SPECTRE, is never played by the same actor twice until the Daniel Craig films. I always thought that Max Von Sydow was the most iconic of the villainous, cat loving, leaders. My favorite henchman has always been Jaws. You'll see him later in the Roger Moore era, Jen. He was in two Bond films since he was very popular at the time. It's too bad that they stopped having such memorable and unique henchpeople in the later Bonds. They were always a staple of the classic films.

The thing about "Goldfinger", unlike "Dr. No" or "From Russia with Love" that you have to understand is the is where the foundation was set establishing the standard for every Bond film that was to follow. It was the formula that made the franchise successful. All movies start with the completion of his former mission, or the fallout of the same. Then there's the plot established by the villain, the assignment by M, the banter between Bond and Moneypenny, the gadgets offered via Q Branch, the location where the story takes place, the first meeting between Bond and the arch villain, (who is always a rich megalomaniac), the sacrificial lamb, who dies, the situation where Bond meets the Fin Fatal who is caught up in the plot, the chief hitch man who traps Bond, followed by the tense moments where Bond defeats the evil plan. Has his way with the girl and moves on.

There was an Aston Martin DB Mark III car in Ian Fleming's Goldfinger novel, but the Aston Martin company was by no means particularly enthusiastic about the Bond film. John Stears, a two-time Academy Award-winning special effects expert, went to Aston Martin to try and make a deal with them. Among the cars he saw a beautiful prototype DB5 and fell in love with it. It was not easy but John Stears eventually charmed Aston Martin's general manager and they got the car. With the success of the Goldfinger, the sales of Aston Martin went up by 60 percent and after that they never had any more problems getting cars from manufacturers for Bond films. The first so called Bond car (DB5) in Goldfinger made such an impression that it has since appeared in six more Bond films.

9:00 - Auric Goldfinger was played by Gert Fröbe. Fröbe, who spoke little English, said his lines phonetically, but was too slow. To redub him, he had to double the speed of his performance to get the right tempo. The only time his real voice is heard is during his meeting with members of the Mafia. Bond is hidden below the model of Fort Knox whilst Fröbe's natural voice can be heard above. However, he was redubbed for the rest of the film by TV actor Michael Collins. There was an Odd Job figure that could throw his hat and an Aston Martin DB5 model with an ejector seat, machine guns and the bullet proof shield. The car cost $4 dollars and My allowance was 50 cents a week. I didn’t get candy, soda or comic books and just saved my money for the toy car. I went to a catholic school and the boys were required to wear ties, which we hated. After Goldfinger, we got rid our clip on ties for real ones and wore blazers to school so we could look like 007.

I saw it when released and noticed the same thing you did. Of course, back in the day, it was very edgy. It's hard for people today to realize the sensation this movie caused when it came out. Everyone was talking about it and of course we went back to the theater to see it multiple times. I think we paid $1.50 to see the movie.

Goldfinger is the film that established the Bond movie ‘formula’ that exists to this day: gun barrel walk, pre-credits sequence, sultry movie theme song with the racy credits, meeting with M, Q, Moneypenny and the villain, gadgets, amazing set designs for the villain’s lair, etc.

This is THE bond movie. Its the 1st movie that has everything - The gadgets, the bondgirls with the most outragous names the Aston Martin, the original theme and the best Bond theme of them all (although Live & Let Die comes a close 2nd). Some fun facts - Pussy Galore was played by Honnor Blackman, who played Kathy Gayle, the 1st woman partner of John Steed in the UK TV series The Avengers (not the marvel stuff) from the 1960s, When she left Diana Rigg replaced her as Mrs Peel. This is very much a cult series, that was ressurected in the 1970s as The New Avengers and appeared in the late 1990s as a movie with Uma Thurman as Mrs Peel. The Theme song Goldfinger was sung by Dame Shirley Bassey who did 2 further Bond Themes (Diamonds are Forever and Moonraker) and is the only singer to do more than 1 Bond Theme.

I first saw 'Goldfinger' 60 yrs ago, during the summer between my sophomore and junior yrs in high school. I snuck into the theater through the rear exit with my buddy, Jackie. It was a smash hit then, and I enjoyed the Bond mystique. But now it just seems like a giddy, cheesy romp. The best part of the experience is the 007 Goldfinger theme song, sung with power and beauty by Miss Shirley Bassey. Her story about the recording is captivating - see Wikipedia for the funny details.

Really love that one, too! That was the first one I was able to see in the theater due to the age restriction. Dianna Rigg played the short-lived Mrs. Bond and Telly Savalas as Blofeld. Great premiere and reactions to Goldfinger, Jen!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽I am partial to Sean Connery's "Diamonds are Forever" (1971). This marked his return to the roll of James Bond after George Lazenby took over the roll in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969). Roger Moore's first outing as 007 in "Live and Let Die" (1973) is enjoyable too. All three are good picks!

Color TV was just coming into homes. The space race was happening, and this movie sent bond movies into the stratosphere. No pun intended.
