Something I always liked about Thomas Gabriel is how he has a growing fear of John. The more people Mcclane kills the more desperate Gabriel becomes. That’s an aspect that isn’t in any other villain from the series.

5. Yuri Komarov-A super forgettable and bland character who, for some reason, is a surprise villain. 4. Colonel Stuart-He's fine. I don't really remember a ton about him, but Sadler provides a bit of an unsettling edge to him in a few scenes. 3. Thomas Gabriel-He was pretty cool. I didn't find him to be that great, but his plan was very cool and Timothy Olyphant's performance was very good. 2. Simon-Peter Gruber-A diabolical and worthy successor to his brother. His plan was so wildly creative and Irons was so much fun, especially since he didn't appear on screen for quite a bit into the movie. 1. Hans Gruber-A classy, menacing, manipulative, and hilarious villain with an awesome back and forth with McClane and Alan Rickman's delightfully despicable performance.

Yeah, I'll agree with Hans Gruber being on top. Alan Rickman is so good at playing the villain, not just here, but Harry Potter as well, with being Snape, even though he wasn't the villain, he seems evil enough, that you can buy Harry thinking he is in league with Voldemort. Alan Rickman truly was a great actor, and may he rest in peace.

This is the only time Ive ever fully guessed your ranking, lol. I mean you truly can't get any better than Alan Rickman and Jeremy Irons. I'm only sorry we never got them as brothers together because that would've been fantastic.

Remember that Hans Gruber is from West Germany, loves luxuriously expensive designer suits and steals money for his own personal greed. He was a professional thief. He wasn’t political but he’s definitely a capitalist. Simon Gruber was from East Germany. A colonel in the East German army. Specialised in infiltration techniques implying he was in the stasi, the east German secret police. He shows mercy to people that don’t have to be killed, infact he goes out his way to minimise deaths. He plants bombs and tells the police where they are and how to defuse them, using riddles a teenager could solve. The only bombs that explode that he needed to explode 1 is at a dept store at beginning of business when it should be quietest. 2. The subway bomb which he really needs to detonate but still tells the police and as a result no one died. 3. The boat was deserted apart from John and Zeus his enemies, and it’s worth remembering that he let zeus go earlier for no reason apart from decency. He even tried to offer John a dump truck of gold in return for backing off. He didn’t plant the bomb in the school and seemed to be disgusted at the idea “of course not. I’m a soldier not a monster” While Simon shows greed by not destroying the gold, he implies it will be shared with his men and it was intended to hurt the west’s wealth as revenge for east Germany’s collapse and maybe he used to fund a new home for these nomads. Sure he forgets to toast the fallen comrades which one man seems to notice implying he wasn’t as honourable as he appeared. But on balance Simon is political and has a complicated motive as well as a equally complicated morality that Hans doesn’t. You can even argue over Simon’s honour and motivations, both sides citing good examples. The point is with all that being said, it makes sense Hans is more suave and classy than his brother. They were Polar opposites of each other and Simon even says he didn’t like him and agrees with John he was an asshole. One a career criminal, One a devoted military officer. One from capitalist west, One from Soviet east. One happy to kill civilians to aid his plan eg rooftop C4, One avoids it where possible even if it endangers his plan, eg warning John about the subway bomb. I bet Hans would have put a real bomb in the school if he thought it increased his chance of success. So yes Simon is less cool but that’s because it fits his character to be less vain. I’d love to see a prequel mini series about them growing up and parting ways.

Colonel Stuart was a brilliant villain in theory but had such little screen time and not much to do to make him great, apart from that one infamous plane crash scene. I can't help but feel that he could have done more to make him greater.

Sam Neill was actually considered for the role of Hans Gruber in the first film which would've been cool but at the same time I'm glad he declined and later got the chance to work with Mcteirnan on Hunt for Red October and with Speilberg in Jurassic Park as the iconic lead Dr. Alan Grant.

Love your videos dude but I think it's somewhat dismissive to say Colonel Stuart is weak or not intimidating in any category, he whooped McClane's ass with ease in a hand to hand fight and also deliberately crashed a plane full of civilians without mercy.

Not surprising that this ranking aligns perfectly with the overall Die Hard ranking, which goes to show what a great villain can do for a movie. The original wouldn't be the classic that it is without Rickman's portrayal of Hans Gruber, and A Good Day To Die Hard, while not being elevated to a classic, could have at least been salvaged with a more memorable antagonist. Which brought to mind a movie like True Lies. While I absolutely adore this film, I think it's held back from being considered more of a classic by having one of the most bland, generic villains you could possibly dream up. Simon Gruber falls under a particular type of trope that I like to call Smart Villains, Die Stupid. I think it's a fault on how smart they were written to be, that they couldn't be defeated, without some good old fashioned plot convenient stupidity to lead to their inevitable downfall

It’s funny this vid comes out right after I watched Die Hard 2 for the first time as an adult. The scene of the top dog doing tai chi naked thru me the fork off. I paused and started laughing especially after realizing it was Heywood from Shawshank! Then I thought, “he kinda looks like the T-1000” then immediately afterwards we see the actor who portrayed T-1000 along with John Leguizamo! Movie was ok bit the whole Xmas terrorist things was a little hard to believe for a second time and the producers/writers knew it too cause the characters kept mentioning it!!! Also: loved Hans Gruber and his brother wasn’t bad either. RIP Allen Rickman.

So this isn't really relevant to this video (it was a good video though) but I've watched some other KZfaqrs whom I won't name drop here who can't seem to stand firmly on their own opinions. Good video, but gotta disagree with you about William Sadler as Colonel Stuart being only an adequate or moderate villain. I’ve always thought he’s just as good a villain as the ones from Die Hard 3 and 4. I mean, I thought Stuart was very intimidating, maybe not at first, due to his stupid nude karate intro. But the scene that makes Stuart intimidating is the scene where he purposely and sadistically enjoys directing a 747 plane of civilians into the ground and their deaths. Just look at Stuart’s face during and after the civilian plane crash, and for me anyway, things were made very clear how scary and ruthless, batshit insane, and downright evil this guy is and how he clearly gives “no fucks” how many die in the process of him completing his mission. I don’t know, maybe I’m in the minority, but I always felt Stuart was a bad ass villain same as Simon Gruber and Tom Gabriel. But yes, the ultimate villain above all others in the Die Hard franchise is of course, the fantastic Hans Gruber for in the original Die Hard. Even if there are future Die Hard films, I doubt Hans Gruber will ever be de-throned as the best villain. And yes, whoever the generic villain from Die Hard 5 is easily the worst villain from the worst film if the franchise. Die Hard 5 is a steaming turd, I honestly don’t know how such a massive drop in quality happened all around with that film. I mean you can argue some sequels to the original are better than others, but really all of the first 4 Die Hard movies are pretty damn good all around. Then Die Hard 5 came along and just shot the franchise in the head. Lastly my ranking best to worst 1. Hans Gruber 2. Thomas Gabriel 3.
