grieving for an abuser is such a complicated process and i really appreciate how the showrunners handled it.

This!! I’ve already “pre grieved” my parents in a way but I know realistically I’m going to be Roman when it happens because if the emotions are already complicated when they’re alive I can’t imagine in death

I think that's what made it even more heartbreaking, that he's breaking down over someone who abused him his whole life but it's still his dad in that coffin

i kind of hate using the word "abuser" bc it flattens out the complications. logan was abusive, absolutely. but the kids will never think of him as simply an "abuser" bc that word won't capture all of what he was to them or what they're feeling. he's their father, their abuser, their provider, their judge and jury, their shadow, their boss, etc.

Roman going to the protest just so he could get beaten and hurt is absolutely heartbreaking, he’s so accustomed to dealing with emotions with pain that the first thing he does when in emotional pain is to look for physical one to numb him .

The funeral is the perfect example of what the kids are. Roman is a poser who crumbles under pressure, when things go wrong. Shiv rejects all responsibility and places it on someone else when things get messy but wants to remind people she played a part when things are better. Kendall bumbles his way through but ends up rising to the occasion in his own way only to ruin it later. And Connor is a non factor.

this episode solidified succession as my favorite TV series of all time. obviously connor’s wedding, the finales of season 1 and 3, and all of the episodes in between had insane moments, but to deliver with such great writing and storytelling over 40 hours into the show is just mind blowing. season 4 of succession is one gut punch after the next and it literally never stops. an absolute triumph of a series, and will forever be one of the best pieces of media ever conceived!

@sparkleclover
@sparkleclover 6 ай бұрын
James Cromwell was actually asked what Ewan was feeling in that moment when he looks across the aisle at Kendall and he said he was feeling pity and sympathy for him. He said he recognizes there's torment inside him, and as a human being, he has compassion for him. He recognizes Ken is stuck in a system, not of his own making, and that he's being encouraged to make it even worse. He's stuck, and he suffers with this pain of not knowing if anyone cares about him except for his money.

It took me awhile but it was this episode where I was finally done with Kendall...and it was how he reacted to Jess FINALLY speaking up and saying she wanted something different for herself. That woman stood by Kendall throughout everything and showed him more loyalty any of his siblings did. Put up with all his crap and manic behavior and did her job perfectly....only to be treated like garbage the second she "stepped outta line". It was then I realized that Kendall was (for me at least) irredeemable in his narcissism.
@sparkleclover
@sparkleclover 6 ай бұрын
Jess quitting over the Mencken election was just bad/contrived writing IMO. She's been working for a right wing company this entire time, one that employs people like Ravenhead, and she's suddenly shocked that they ended up backing Mencken? Also, Kendall did act like a total asshole but it's pretty obvious that he's doing that because he's hurt and lashing out, not because he actually views Jess as garbage. He puts on his sunglasses right after that interaction which is a callback to Roman saying "Sunglasses. Good idea, that way people won't see you cry." It because of how loyal she's been that he freaks out. He's losing the one person he always trusted and expected to be in his corner, one of the only people who (according to Juliana) actually cared about him and saw good in him. There was also cut dialogue from the script where he tells her how much he cares about her. If he didn't care, he wouldn't have had such a strong reaction to her wanting to leave. It shows how immature Kendall is. I don't think it had anything to do with her "stepping out of line" though. He's a petulant child having a tantrum because someone he loves is essentially telling him they're done with him.

Honestly the people who side with Ken on the Rava situation are kinda wild, like yes okay Rava might be overreacting, but he literally said “do not fuck with me today” to her. Excuse me? Is that an acceptable way to speak to the mother of your children? Yea, its understandable that Ken wants his family with him, but if I were Rava and he spoke to me like that, I would 100% not go. If he needed them there for emotional support then he could’ve said that. He could’ve said so many other things that could’ve swayed Rava but no, he was immediately dismissive and aggressive and out of touch with the feelings of everyone involved

He is awful, but the difference is that he actually occasionally has brief moments of self awareness where he feels bad about being awful. See the election episode with him agonizing about not being a good father, him saying he's a bad person in the s3 finale, etc. Shiv and Roman have never once admitted to being bad people, nor do they really care about being good people. But there is a part of Kendall that wants to be good and feels like shit about the fact that deep down, he knows that he really isn't.

It is 100% clear as day that Shiv and Roman do not care about the feelings or wellbeing of others. We do, however, get multiple instances of Ken wrestling with his morality (taking the blame after the car accident even though the waiter was the one that pulled the wheel, financially helping the family of the waiter, the election, recognizing he's not doing enough as a father, etc)
