I've just read the sad news of his death. The man had no peers. It was one of the highlights of my life to have seen him play for Tottenham in this match.

He was so good it looked like he was just taking the piss out of World class players. As an Englishman and England fan I have total respect for his skills. Yes goal 1 in that World Cup match was the worst example of refereeing in a World Cup ever but goal 2, omg. Total respect for a great, probably one of the greatest ever, footballers. RIP.
@user-uf2or4jg6h3 жыл бұрын
You should forgive him for that goal. Before he made it the English player beat him in face with elbow. And called him simulator. Maradona was very angry. That English player made Maradona score that goal by hand.

I was there and remember well that fantastic bicycle kick from the corner. I've never seen anything like Maradona. You felt he could do anything. Brady played well, Hoddle was excellent. But Maradona was from another planet.The whole game is also on this site.
@BRATASAURUS3 жыл бұрын
I was there to still have the programme, thats how i remember the game to just as you said ,even though they were on the same team it seemed like a football dual between maradona and hoddle as to who could do the longest pass best free kick most crazy skill
@lexsoft39693 жыл бұрын
@@keithmaxine534 I agree. Hoddle dictated the play, even from deep esp in the 1st half. His sublime ball control, vision, passing range coming from both of his feet were delighful to watch. He was the real number 10 playmaker in this match.
@jagjitsinghmanku2283 Жыл бұрын
Both played in that epic quarterfinal a month or so later. I’ve watched it back in full now. Maradona controlled the whole match from start to finish. Hoddle played second fiddle to Maradona when it mattered most.

One thing I admire about most English football fans is that they recognise quality when they see it and they give credit where and when credit is due, regardless of whether they're supposed to "hate" the player or not - they are purists, true football lovers. In this case, despite the fact that Maradona pierced their hearts only months after this match, many English fans continue to hail him as the greatest.

Hoddle shined in that game and I remember the after match conference in which Maradona asked Ardiles why England had been hiding Hoddle and Ardiles said they don’t like skilful players in this country. So true and you can see by this video how one world-class player compliments another.. Hoddle was so wasted in England But revered around the world. England’s preoccupation with work rate and trench tackling in that era cost us a once in a generation talent.
@lexsoft39693 жыл бұрын
I have seen the full match on youtube. It's apparent that Maradona acknowledged Hoddle's ability as a playmaker, as he never hesitated to pass the ball to Hoddle to build up play. Even at one moment in 2nd half, in freekick situation, he just did short pass to Hoddle who then striked on target. They also tried to do combo whenever possible.
