I Hate it But I Love it - Diehard Petrolhead Drives a Tesla for The First Time in His Life

In this video I do something I have never done before and that is to drive an EV (BEV, battery electric vehicle) more specifically a Tesla Model 3. In the video I share my genuine and honest first impressions, my frustrations with the touchscreen, charging attempts and cornering experience.
I have to say that the driving was a lot more enjoyable than I imagined. Different but not that different. Some things, mostly related to the user interface were definitely not as enjoyable and were even frustrating. The goal of the video was to share honest and genuine feelings and impressions through the eyes of a petrolhead so that other petrolheads can get a relatable second hand experience of EV driving.
I also have to say that I'm ashamed the Internet almost managed to convince me into thinking that I must pick a side. Choose one over the other. Stand against EVs because I'm a petrolhead. I realized that I started to dislike these cars without ever having tried them. I started getting on a bandwagon and I think that's stupid and it does nothing other than rob me of new experiences. There's no reason to pick sides. It's just a car. We only live once so I think it's better to taste and try everything rather than argue about things. It's better to appreciate the incredible diversity of this interesting time we live in.
Thanks for watching.

I totally agree about the user interface. I hate it when everything is buried in menus, on a touch screen. Gimme a freaking button! I can hit the button while driving, without taking my eyes off the road for more than a split second. The same can't be said for a touch screen.

I am a retired engineer. I've been arguing your points on user interface FOREVER! First principles of human/machine interaction should not be violated! Most drivers are used to a stoplight that has RED as stop, GREEN as go. Change that, and you kill a lot of people. Change the paradigm of daily car use and you get a lot of very frustrated people! The screen should at least mimic a row of commonly used buttons available on practically every car. Great comments on tribalism by the way.

Go rent a rental car from a maker you are not familiar with, I did last year and that Puegot has so many controls so badly positioned it took me 10 minutes to unfold the wing mirrors and the navigation controls were so bad I used my iPhone for 4 days before I was able to switch to car nav. Why the narrator of the show could not see the hazard button which is above the rear view mirror, same place it is in many cars I have no idea. This kind of blindness is common on people with obvious anger management issues though.

@@jjamespacbell "Go rent a rental car from a maker you are not familiar with" I had this 15 years ago (I think it was a VW Passat). I had a 500 mile business trip and the car was dropped off in the company car park with the keys left at reception. A hire car so no user manual. The "handbrake" is a pushbutton and was simply crap. It would either roll back down a slope or stay on and stall the motor when I pulled away. No functional benefit to the user, simply change for it's own sake.

I hope you were saying this from actual experience driving a Tesla. Most people feel it’s going to be a horrible experience that causes a lot of retraining but actually pretty much everybody that ends up driving a Tesla are very happy with the screen big advantage is that your car will always stay up-to-date have all the featuresthat the new Tesla have because of the software based interface.

@@bspencersf Not convinced that's true - i own one, several of my friends do (tech company, not a huge surprise) and most of us bitch about the terrible UI, even several years into ownership. Sure, I've learned where all the options are, but it's still a terrible flow to have to go into the car menu, then the lights menu, then press two buttons when you drive into a fog bank and need to be paying attention but there is no foglight button you can hit by feel. I realise they "fixed" this on the newer models by just deleting the fog lights. The passenger wants into the glove box they reach over to the drivers side, take away the nav system by opening the menu, then press another button. This is a worse flow. Yes, you can learn it. It's still bad. That's before you reach the things that only work on automatic setting but the automatic stuff doesn't really work reliably, like lights and wipers. Sure, they work 90+% of the time, but that's still a lot worse than normal wipers and lights that work 100% of the time.

Petrolhead here. I had one of these for 4 years. I agree, undoubtedly the best daily to drive around town and get the kids to school safely with a full "tank" everyday when you can charge home, plus very limited maintenance. Now the biggest problem is that the acceleration is the only party trick, you need something else for the weekends. Personally chose an MX5, which is slower, less practical, less safe, more expensive to run (and insure in my area, an MX5 yup!) but it brings the smiles the Tesla is missing. I don't drive an EV yet, I may never drive an EV, but I can see the advantages. Most of what I hear about EV's IRL comes from people who have never driven one. I am petrolhead aswell. I have Nissan 200sx S14 which I have rebuilt all by myself. I use it for weekend drives, some slalom and some drifting to have fun and enjoy what an old ICE car could offer. I also have a 2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance as a daily. I also don't agree with people, who wants to pick sides. Probably, it is like if You pick a side and You think that you have picked a better side - your opponents in the opposite side are losing something or are just stupid, and that, for some reason, makes a person think that he is better in that way. Well it is what I could agree on. I think You can have both of both worlds. There is no car, that can beat my TM3P for my taste as a daily. I have a solar panels on a roof, each day I have as much energy to drive as I want to. And I stopped counting the money for daily driving. In the end of the month it costs me 10€-20€ to drive as much as I need. For all the trips I take. It is super reliable, it is predictable, it doesn't need effort at all to control it. All the technology that has got into it is amazing. And for the price of it there is no other car that can be just as fast from the start (3.3 secs/100km/h), as comfy and plenty of space and as cheap to drive. There's nothing in the ICE world for it. But. Yes. It lacks some things that we had before and lost. I used to say, that best cars were made up until 2005 or so. After that computers took over and ruined much fun from the cars. Not all, but generally. And this is why keeping the "analog" which only need + from the battery and some fuel - is still really fun and enjoyable. Both cars for me are amazing for what they are. They are just made for different purposes. Sure I can turn on Track mode in my Tesla and start drifting. But no, it would not be fun. I have my S14 for that. And yes, I could try daily drive my S14, but ammount of "back pain", sweat and just the effort needed to drive it... Tesla is for that. ----------------- Also few points about the video. You can control windshield wipers with the button on the left and scroll wheel to change it's speed. That beeping You have heard over and over again - I think that it rental company device on the top? My car haven't made on in two years I have it (not talking about warning signals (those three loud BEEP BEEP BEEP)). Also, the minimalism of it, it is love it or hate it. I like it, it saves not only on cost, but on weight, which makes Tesla more efficient. And lot of things can be changed via voice command instead of trying to search via touch screen. I think I had more points in mind, but these are the ones I remember after one hour after watching. :D

@@SaithronOne It's not bonkers to me as an EV hater. That's a very good thing about EVs. We have to stay objective here. BUT most of us with ICE cars have the petrol stations on our daily commute route anyway so it's not like we're driving any extra distance, most of the time. And good of you ot point out that having a wallbox is a privelege, because most people won't have access to that for many years to come. And the wallbox argument sadly fails if your daily commute is longer than your vehicles range from fully charged, or if you do longer trips from time to time outside of the daily commute. So yes, with a wallbox, that part of EV life is a good thing. But it kinda stops there for me, haha.

The problem around the interface is simple, it isn't build for people who drive, its build for people who don't/dont want to drive, the safety systems are built around this notion too, the beeping, lane assist, cruise control even, all built around giving the driver as little to do as possible, because its built for people who don't want anything to do with driving. Basically, its not a car guy car, nor is like 70% of the cars coming out today, maybe more, cars are increasingly moving towards a driver-do-nothing situation, and has been for a very long time.

I agree with you brother and that is the reason I bought a Mini Cooper electric as my first EV. The Mini still feels like a regular car that I am use to but it is electric.

i have a tesla - its terrific but i just loved listening to this guy! it does take some getting used to but now when i get in other cars all the buttons now feel too busy haha. one point he makes which is really true - we lost the cars with character a long time before evs turned up and all the road cameras and policing for 'your safety' already squeezed all fun out of life in many spheres.

This is brilliant - real world information on modern cars. I'm a very passionate advocate for reducing our impact on the planet, I even run a voluntary beach cleaning and eco-education group, but I'm still not sure electric cars are the right future, especially with all the technology involved. I personally like a basic car with as few electronics as possible, the proverbial 'less to go wrong' philosophy. For some years we've had some amazing technology on cars, but I don't need auto lights or wipers, it's generally pretty obvious when they should be used. The same goes for the things you've experienced here. I also know when there is another vehicle nearby, I like it when I can easily move my hand to operate a heater control, I like to pull a lever to open a bonnet (or frunk). All this technology is taking driving to a new level. A level where the average driver doesn't have to think or act, relying instead on the tech to do the job. It's just asking for trouble when it fails. I know of somebody who borrowed a car with an old parking brake lever. They parked, exited the car and it rolled away because they were used to their own car having an automatic electric parking brake. Technology makes us lazy and ever more reliant on it. It's amazing but unnecessary. Surely keeping it simple is better for the environment. I'm not saying we should stick to ICE cars, but do we really need all these electronics just to drive a car? Less tech = less resources needed to make it. Edit. To add. Your closing speech was spot on. I'm guilty with this comment! It's partly because I like simple things. Partly because I don't know what the answer is to reduce human caused environmental impact. And partly because because I don't want to be one of the sheeple and conform.

You should have drove cybertruck and traumatized yourself on camera On a serious note, I would actually look forward to hear your take in some of the enthusiast-oriented models like EV6 GT or a Lucid Sapphire.

Funny thing, you can't get a cybertruck in the EU because it doesn't even come near passing pedestrian safety standards

At full throttle on track 8mins, or 32 kph. That is the sad reality of teslas. Batteries heat up, batteries are dead, and so are your brakes.

I am not a friend of EVs at all, but most ICE cars can't make it through a full lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife as well because of brakes fading. Well at least this can be fixed.

Things i hate about teslas: -regen is absolute ass. Even on the weakest setting, it is way too strong. No way to finely adjust it like a hyundai or completely turn it off. Great way to give passengers motion sickness -fsd is a public safety hazard -everything is controlled through the screen -no stalk controls on newer models. Turn signals are buttons. Why? -they are ugly -the drivers are (generally) unbelievably stupid -i hate elon musk

I disliked the regen for the first few minutes too, but it's actually fine, you only have to adjust your throttle release and it never jerks again. I managed to recharge 2% of the battery during a big downhill with it.

That's also a strong pet peeve of mine, a lot of people equate EVs with Tesla and Musk. While you could claim they are the pioneers of modern EVs, there's just so many better choices nowadays, and the stuff coming out of China is (mostly) quite impressive for the price... We don't need to be driving spaceships like this!

"regen is absolute ass. Even on the weakest setting, it is way too strong." There is a way to adjust it: it's under your right foot. You are using it the wrong way,and btw unable to find out how to use it the proper way.

I normally love your channel and content but this one is a major miss. As someone who loves wrenching on a project ICE car and daily drives a model 3, the whole video is just cringe inducing. It’s like watching your grandpa try to use the internet, just totally clueless and out of their element, ranting about little things that took the rest of us of 5 seconds to figure out. I expected an engineering mind like yours to be much more frustrated by things like the absolutely stupid door handle design than anything else. I think you were too blinded by pre-determined disdain for the UI to give it a fair shake or notice all the other legitimate problems with the car. And that beeping in the second half of the video wasn’t the car, it was your camera or something the rental company installed to watch you. Teslas don’t make that noise.

This is the best condemnation of a car that is fast, comfortable, and BORING. With everything on an app on a tablet how do you drive and pay attention to the tablet? Thanks so much for showing even more reasons why I don't ever want a Tesla.

this was a very funny video, the trials of getting into a new vehicle, i woulda loved to see this on the new model 3 with the stalkless design, yes indeed the learning curve is something else, that said after learning all the details of how different it is vs the old car you were driving, it becomes an enjoyable experience. that smile just all over his face when he punches it for the first time, total gold.

Now people should understand why Bosnian national dishes are things like Chevapi or Burek. Three ingredients. Protein, Carbs and Fet. All naked. Salt and pepper and onions and Kajmak if you must. Man likes his car like he likes his food. Simple but and only necessary flavour. No beeps no submenus.. no passwords.
