Dieelectric grease serves two purposes. It prevents a phenomenon called micro fretting in low voltage data circuits. It also prevents terminal arcing in higher voltage circuits. Dielectric grease is 100 percent non conductive. As a dealership technician I used a lot of dielectric grease in my day.

Me and my buddy have been stumped with his preludes fueling system for weeks , If not months now and after finally tracking it down it was piled on dielectric grease in one plug of the fuel pump causing it to often falsely prime as it wasnt getting a good connection / loosing . This video helped me figure that out so thank you 🙏

A grease not designed as dielectric, can be conductive, or not get fully pressed out at the contact points there by adding resistance. A good dielectric grease is non conductive, and gets pressed out at the socket contact points so no resistance is added. I learned this the hard way when I used molykote 111 on electrical connections.

Dielectric grease by definition is non conductive. A buddy of mine once made himself a real mess by substituting the gray anti corrosion paste used on aluminum house wiring for dielectric grease. Don't do that

If using dialectric grease and it is inhibiting the flow of electricity through a connection then there is an issue with the connector. And yes you can use bulb grease. I use dialectric grease in networking equipment including routers, switches, cameras, access points (AP), etc. and I fill the RJ45 ports up with it. Even on the RJ45 connectors I inject it into the backside(Where you push the wires through). I do this in harsh corrosive enviroments including industrial and high salt/high moisture installations. Some have been installed for over 15 years without failure and have to replace the device because it has past it's service life and not a corrosion or conductive issue. The majority of devices in the harshest of environments are POE being the AP's and cameras. A bad connector that is lubricated with vibration can cause an issue and industrial applications never skimp on cheap connectors, you'll thank me.

Having worked on a commercial fishing vessel in Alaska, rebuilding electrical connections is a well practiced and well tested thing... *This guy is giving you bad advice. (well meant, but bad).* If your connections are good metal on metal, the dielectric grease is so little resistance, you can't even measure it with a regular multimeter. Led's will have no problem with this. If your connection is so bad that Led's - known for their low wattage - struggle to run, you've got a bigger problem. *If your connections are super loose, that's the problem, not the protecting grease.* Maybe you need a new spring in the socket. Maybe you just bought a cheap junk socket. Maybe you need to squish the holding tabs. If it's too lose to press on the connections, any lightbulb will have issues (and the socket may end up melting things...) If you have a more sealed type of connection, it is possible to stuff enough grease in there that the connector doesn't want to press together (true with any grease). But non-dielectric greases may be conductive and _short_ your lightbulb socket. He's suggesting you risk that rather than use the (multi-)Industry standard proper grease that works. A submersion rated wire nut is just a regular wire nut stuffed with dielectric grease and a way to hold that in so it doesn't get washed or scooped away. So, *you could just slather a bunch on the back of a connection to seal it...* But *The concern you should have (with any grease) is heat & cooking.* A lot of bulb lens/enclosures are loose and leaky because that is their plan to deal with the heat: airflow. If you seal that all up, instead of a convection current, the heat is now confined to build up inside your bulb enclosure. You don't want to have grease melting and making it to the hot part of your bulb, where it can create a hot spot and fry the bulb or the grease could catch fire. Dielectric grease is very resistant to burning. All bets are off if you are grabbing some random grease off your shelf.

@7andydroid76 ай бұрын
Hence the name "dielectric" grease. A dielectric is an INSULATOR, and they are rated by a "dielectric constant" which is an expression of the items insulating properties ie: resistance to electron flow. Ceramics, for example have an extremely high DC, which is why that material is used in high voltage transmission line connections to the suspending towers. The ceramic prevents the extremely high voltage (over 140KV) from conducting to the towers and to ground. This would not only render this method of transmitting electricity useless, but would obviously be very dangerous.
@domo86767 ай бұрын
The basis of a good electrical connection is a good mechanical connection. Dielectric grease does NOT prevent a good mechanical connection. Please learn about the product before comment (as seen below). I've used it successfully since 1970 and it has NEVER been the cause of a failure.
@0verload7 ай бұрын
I use it on the outside of the connection, for example where the bulb mates with the socket. This insures that the moisture is kept out. I personally think it's erroneous to put the grease between mating points where electricity is conducted. It provides unnecessary resistance and if you simply put the grease on the outside to keep moisture out in the first place than it negates the need to do that, all while not causing unnecessary resistance.

Dialect grease is a GOOD investment. BUY IT! Just use it sparingly. Don't glob it on the terminal, except on the base of a battery terminal where it can help to prevent gases from inside the battery from escaping and producing massive corrosion ALL over your terminal. SO, the terminal base is ONE place to glob it on. I can't think of any other locations, but they might exist.
@StringerNews17 ай бұрын
Dielectric doesn't mean the same as "electric" so it's not the thing to use on most electrical parts. If the problem is rust, use something for rust. WD-40, or DeOxIt if you want to get fancy. But if the problem is water infiltration, then packing the socket with thick silicone grease is a good solution.
@dangerdavefreestyle7 ай бұрын
if you put it on the blades of a fuse the grip is scratchy and very firm so that will displace whatever grease necessary to get a great connection and make it so it doesnt get stuck! same with relays. for bolt on connections the mechanical force displaces the grease and a great connection is maintained. therefore, the grease is surrounding and protecting the connection. i can see in certain situations where too much of it on not so tight or sensitive connections can inhibit current flow. a little bit on plastic connectors also keeps them from getting stuck. corrosion really sucks and can make troubleshooting very difficult. as with anything it seems like the right amount for the right application is key. cook me a bbq brisket and i will come over and saturday to help you paint your garage.

When used in a properly made connection no amount of dielectric grease will cause a resistive or insulated connection. You must have tight connection and clean metal to metal contact meaning clean all oxidation from both surfaces before application. If you call tech support you will be told to use it liberally too much product will not affect performance. If it causes an issue its the connection not the product.Never ever use non dielectric grease on any electrical connection as it may be combustible as well as conductive........................

Question I learned from a mechanic if u apply only I inch on ur finger x2 of dielectric grease onto ur squeaky serpentine belt it remedies the noise. That said I bought the grease and applied it and it worked. However I never even felt or looked at the belt so I found out the belt is worn. That said i went ahead just bought a new belt and when it comes in by amazon is it okay to apply the rest of the d. Grease on the new belt into the grooves since I have no reason to use this stuff on anything else it's the small small tube already about .5 used. So question is it safe to apply the d. Grease stuff to new un used serpentine belts?
@DieselsHOGVlog2 жыл бұрын
So sorry for the late reply, notifications from YT has become painful! I imagine by now you chose a path on that question but the short answer is definitely NO do not put anything on belts ever! If it's squeaking it's because either the belt is worn or loose (worn is most common but as idler pully springs fatigue it can make the belt loose) or if there's an absolute ton of miles on the vehicle sometimes the crank pully is worn as well. Never apply a lubricant to something that depends on friction to function. The reason it squeaks is because its slipping, so adding the grease made it quiet temporarily because the slipping continued but there was a friction loss. There are other reasons that are much more serious like failing bearings in your alternator, A/C or idlers etc but most common is a worn belt as you discovered. Thanks for watching!

Despite the fact it has "electric" right there in the name, it's a fairly common misconception that dielectric grease is capable of conducting electricity. In actual fact, dielectric grease is an insulator and doesn't conduct electricity. I'm a power engineer and tell you this by way of education not just what I think.
