Today on the channel we take a look at this Ditch Witch Model R40 Chain Trencher equipped with a V4 Wisconsin Engine. After sitting for over 10 years, will it start and drive? Special thanks to @AHFixIt for hanging out, offering electrical and life advice, running the camera and seeing first hand, will it start?

When not getting spark from a distributor, connect a spark plug wire directly to the coil and run the engine. If you have spark now, your problem lies between the coil -> cap -> rotor -> cap -> plug wire -> spark plug.

So cool you got that to start up and run. I always bring along a cordless leaf blower when I'm playing with old stuff to clean off the engine compartment and surroundings. Makes it easier to see, as well as lessen the fire hazard.

Great story I find it extremely rewarding to keep/get old equipment running. I have a 1966 Davis task force 500 trencher with backhoe that I took out the two cylinder engine that had a spun rod bearing and grafted in a Wisconsin V4 that came out of a late 50s cement mixer. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.

V4 air cooled Wisconsin was one of the most reliable motors from small farm machinery to industrial off road equipment with gross weight pushing 3 tons empty to fully loaded near 6 tons 6x6 and a small drilling rig and 60" paddle tires mostly swampy areas looking for oil reserves .

Little tip I learned is instead of sucking on the fuel line, blow in the fuel tank cap, and pressurize it, the same results without the same great taste.

I'm halfway through this video when I thought of this; those are old fuel lines. This means that they probably need chabging. The other thought I had is that the accelerator pump's diagram is additionally in need of changing. It's possibly torn.

I have the exact same machine, same model, year, blade and hoe. I want to switch the hoe controls over to 2 stick rather than the 4 it is now even though I have finally mastered the levers haha. Just developed a leak in the swing limiter and the rams need attention but all in all its a good machine. I removed the hoe and took the chain off and have been using it to skid some logs around the property. Great machines

Great video guys! The biggest reason it started and runs with little effort is because it is OLD… had it been newer with electronics it would have cost big bucks to get it running!

I keep hoping that a spark in a distributer is only relative to the amount of spark produced when it should be. That is a proper gap set and a proper ground as you are actually very good with electricity on other stuff. A wrong gap can cause a late spark or early depending on how well set. Another thing commonly overlooked by many many people is the grounding of the points. If those points were not screwed down inside of the distributor, there would not be a spark at all. Many people will sand the points and expect a spark... they should if the points themselves are properly grounded to the distributor and that is possible to look like it should work correctly but corrosive stuff gets between the points and the distributor... one simple way to get this grounded is to just open the screw holding them down and then retighten.... do it a couple times just for a grin as its corroded and needs that abrasion to help complete the ground to this distributor making life a lot easier. Just loosening them a little can help but get serious and do it so you eliminate the chance of the points not being grounded. I can say from experience that getting a shock from a coil can hurt for a long time if it hits you very hard. I lost all feeling in my right arm till I had surgery to correct a joint in my shoulder for getting a serious shock. Now as a kid, I would find some appliance in say a grocery store, hang onto my girlfriend or buddy and then touch the item that gave off a static shock from being not grounded proper..... very common in say stuff before the early seventies and rules about stuff being grounded with a third plug on your electric cord. I never did it on purpose but shocked a older person who peed their pants and then sent me to jail for it. I'm serious as I lost my balance trying to not get shocked myself, it made me jump and grab someone for balance and they got hit double hard as it increases in intensity when that happens. Another trick of my twisted sense of humor was I had really dry and fine hair full of static when I would dry it with a towel. So just for grins used to shock all of my sisters or even my brothers who started out bigger than myself. Lost in conversations here.... make sure that if you can to just take them out, the points I am referring to. Clean this area with some alcohol or starting fluid as its not oily and will not interfere with the proper grounding. Motor manuals used to start their chapter in a wiring book for trouble shooting.... first three words of every manual was "Grounds Grounds Grounds"! The emphasized this was most important

I wish I knew which engine your machine has as I bought a used, low hour VH4D a few years back and rebuilt engines were selling for $6 grand or more online. Bought mine for $850 with 600 hours on it. Runs great. If needed I have an original parts book for Wisconsin engines. It's huge! The largest engines were 65hp if memory serves me 👍.

Just bought one two days ago and the guy said he could not get it to start. It sat 5+ years! After removing the intake, cleaned it out from debris because of the open muffler, gapped the points, cleaned out the carb, then took the chance. I mean $500 it was either going to be junk or a gem! It started surprisingly!!

@@dieseJL I thought the same thing. Considering the insurance to cover trenchers and the gaining popularity of directional drilling... we discussed harvesting the motor etc... instead of putting into use as a trencher. Private property work only for trenching? Still - insurance kills the idea and profitability of it. Biggest private need is for "invisible" dog fences. IDK what your plans are, but it would be cool to see what you do with it. I guess what I'm saying is to please make a follow up video. Fixing the original problem would be cool... but then what? FYI... We also thought about welding a skid steer mounting frame on it. Any skid steer attachment would be able to be mounted on it. Post hole auger, forks, bucket, brush hog etc...

They made the same machine with a vibrating plow. It would be cool to convert it to that. We could use that for snaking irrigation lines and pruning roots.

If you are going to bypass everything that will stop the engine from starting or fly on fire you only have yourself to blame ,No different from making sure if all components are freely moving, It will save you time and unnecessary problems further down the line.

I went to move my beast for the first time this year and was treated to a faceful of mouse nest right out of the gate from that big, beautiful, fan cooled V4. Ive a Case_Davis 30+4 version of this... Mine's articulated and came with a backhoe.. otherwise the same machine. A few items I've garnered over the years: (mine's a 1972 or 4..) install a $14 electric fuel pump(2-4 #'s pressure). They love to eat hydraulic hoses (probably just because they're 50 yrs old now!! LOL) I adapted a VW 32PICT carb & fabricated a manifold out of exhaust tubing and assorted flanges.( Because of my carb orientation, the governor hookup is still in question... but the engine runs like a bear!!) Rims rot out and so I purchased some rim barrels and cut out my centers and welded them to the barrels ..Fixed!! Carlisle till sells thes3e tires. *I added a Chinese multi-function hydraulic spool and it's soo much easier to run. Buy a suspension seat at Tractor suppl.. and your into the 21st century and the equivalent of a $50k machine!!
