I follow the 6BTCummins Rover builds in the UK and it is crazy how that has just taken off! They've really been discovered here, so the prices are getting higher, but still, great engines to work with! If you build something, we have a Facebook page and we'd post a 4BT UK build!

@@dieselconversionspecialist9088 cheers for reply, ive been watching a few builds of some u.k lads putting them in landys, which is great as, apart from the rover v8, their engines were always the weak link( just my opinion!) Ive missed working on engines since i had to stop working( wrecked back and legs), ive now got a good sized workshop, and my cousins just installed a electric hoist, which spans the workshop.....so lifting and moving objects is'nt a problem anymore. My plan is to get the engine/gearbox, rebuild it, then decide what im putting it in!!, i know its the wrong way round....but that just me!!lol!, il probally find a pickup or find something interesting in my mates scrap yard. That would be a very sweet ride. I hope you get it built someday. I have a 1963 Willy's Wagoneer with the Tornado OHC straight 6 in it. Right now it's just sitting but someday I'm going to get that bad boy up and running as well. It only has 28k miles on it so I might leave it original. Believe it or not I got it for $50 about twenty years ago because they previous own tried forcing it into gear one morning when it was -30 F and broke one of the shifting arms. My dad fixed it and we used it sparingly for a while until a part from it was needed here and there. Hopefully someday we will both have our Wagoneer's on the road.

We've done the conversion a few different ways, with automatic trans, with a manual trans, with a stock 4BT, and a mild 4BT. The best combo so far was the mild build--which was just a tweaked rotary pump, stock injectors, and a common rail turbo (from an ISB 170) bigger inter-cooler and with the manual trans (the other video is this build) . It made 505 lbs. of torque at the wheels and still did a respectable 23.9 mpg. I suspect if we'd not lead-footed it everywhere, it would do better. And we've put about 30K on it since the conversion.

This one is a very mild build (we have a video of what went in it). About 35,000 miles on the conversion, many trips down to AZ from MT and it averages about 24mpg.

79's take sort of a unique combination of parts, if you can give the shop a call and 406 755 8878 ext.201 and chat with Sean. The 4BT we have in the half ton has a little bit of work done to it; pump timing, injectors and a turbo from a common rail and it dyno'd around 500 pounds of torque, which may prove to be too much for the stock 5 speed--although we've put 30K miles on it, and so far (fingers crossed) it's holding up.

We've done a few of those. There isn't a pre-made kit, but we do have the parts for them.

You do retain the ecu for the dash, fuel pump no, the Cummins has a fuel pump built in, so just a draw straw in the tank.

+Heather Gebhardt Hey Heather. We put 33's and a lift on ours, plus a bigger turbo and some fuel work, and yes it makes great power but it killed the mileage. I think currently it gets 20ish if it's driven conservatively. We've put 30,000 miles on it, and we have a follow-up video just about ready that will get into the mileage and performance. We've done a few newer OBS style (90's) Broncos, I always like those, they do make a great conversion.

No, the 4BT didn't really add a lot of extra weight. Small block weighs something like 450, so it really only added about 300 or so lbs.

Just the 4BT. Front end didn't seem up to a 6BT. The 4BT makes around 400lbs. of torque, which was better than the early 6BT, and it seems more than adequate to get it down the road. There is a vid on this channel that talks about the 4Bt that's in it and what was done.

We do have a used OEM Cummins to small block GM. It had a 4BT in front of it; you have a bell, we have an adapter plate and flywheel.

We've never done a 12 valve in half-ton, so I actually don't know.

Gearing always helps but you can get almost the same result from using the tranny gearing and tire size to get the proper results, you can use 3:55 gears with 35" tires and no overdrive, 4:10 with an overdrive

35" tire equal about 600 rev per mile, times gear ratios equals engine rpm, times overdrive ratio, this is your 60 mph gauge divide by 60 and multiply by 70 to get your rpm on the highway, 600 tire x 3:55 gears x .73 overdrive ➗ by 60 X 70 =1814 rpm at 70mph going down the highway, diesel engine doesn't need high RPM to make power

In theory it might, but no overdrive or TC lockup with a C6, mileage and power wouldn't be great.

We just put VW tdi in my 87 Toy, with just mild tuning and being 300lbs. lighter than a 4BT, it's already awesome. I think the Toyota VW kit overview is already live on the dieselconversion.com page.

What kind of HP/Torque and Gas Mileage do you get?

Hey Ron--we have a follow-up video on the mileage on our youtube page if you want to see it. We averaged around 25 MPG with the first engine setup, which was very basic, just a common rail turbo, and some pump timing and whatever injectors were in it when we bought it. But it dyno'd 503 lbs. of torque. That truck has been the guinea pig for a lot of other things, so we haven't had a chance to do a mileage test with the stock engine. We just built another one but with an automatic, and different gearing, so it'll be interesting to see how that one does.

I spoke to Sean yesterday on the phone about doing a F-150 or F250 conversion. But I also have an 87 toy motorhome. Love the 22RE gas engine in it for reliability but it is balless and boring. Do you think the VW diesel or the 4bt diesel would give the thing anymore speed and gas mileage?

The 4BT can make lots of power, but it's nearly 800 lbs, so it isn't conversion friendly to the Toyota. The TDI I've become quite attached to, mostly because it's so well supported, a much smaller package and the mileage would be there. We had a TDI Toyota here (mine) but it dropped a valve--long story--so I don't have any mileage info yet. Right now we use Malone for tuning and the tunes available can significantly improve the power level over stock before sacrificing economy. Lots of things of course factor into how it performs, but for a Toyota, I'm really leaning toward the TDI. Ring here at the shop anytime and visit about some of the options. Thanks Ron!

We have not. The only Toyota stuff we've done is with VW TDi, and currently it's in all early Toyota--up through about 1995. We have a 98 Tacoma in here, but it's also a VDub swap,--it's getting a 2.0 Tdi.

Absolutely. Bronco frame is alot stronger. Its same frame as the 350 so the body dont crack above the rear side top door frame. Difference is only wheel base. I buy old f150s to take parts for my 88 bronco.

We put 6BT in a 97 E series, and it actually fit with only some small issues to sort out. A 4BT for sure would have to be a much better fit (and a heck of a lot easier to actually get in there). But yeah, I'd love to see a 4BT in a 150 E series.

Unfortunately we've never towed anything with it, it's hauled lots of stuff, but never towed anything.

Absolutely... same truck just wheel base is shorter. But bronco uses same frame as f350. Way thicker then 150 frame. So its a better truck do build

All of the stack height dimensions for the adapter plate and flexplate are based on the Mazda 5speed, and I don't know if the 4 speed shares any of those dimension.

Bolt pattern on 302 n 351w are the same bolt pattern. Same clutch n flywheel. . Same starter. Clutch center splines are same too. I think id bolt up fine but shed rev high in 4th gear at 60mph
