@RainmanRaysRepairs , Hi Ray. You are on the right track with your system in the truck. I would like to recommend this to help, A Renogy DCC50S DC to DC plus MPPT solar charger. It is specifically designed for dual battery systems like an RV. But will be perfect for your system. And you can put it in parallel with the golf cart contactor and use the contactor to run the inverters higher current than 50A but I wouldn't do that if you have solar panels connected to it. BTW the proper NATO phonetic for the letter P is " Pappa" The charge controller will automatically charge the AGM battery in the bed of the truck and also keep both batteries charged if you connect a solar panel system to it as well. And if you add an renogy BT-2 bluetooth monitor you can use the Renogy app on your phone to monitor the batteries from the house. I have a 2012 Jeep Liberty with a 280W solar panel on it and a 300ah LiFePo4 12v battery with the DCC50S and BT-2 for the last 2 years and it works great. It is all automatic, when the DCC50S senses the truck system voltage is above 13.9 it knows the truck is running and charges both batteries. This is better for the AGM as it will limit the charge current to the AGM to a max of 50A and also do float charging and equalizing charge as well. Right now the only charging you have is the trucks two alternators that isn't controlled. So if the AGM is low on charge and you have the truck running. It looks like you are running 2awg cable from the truck to the golf cart contactor. I will guess that cable is about 12 feet. You will be dumping up to 200A into that battery and exceeding the current capacity of that cable size at that length. If it is 2awg and 12 feet long, Max I would run though it is 150A. That is why I have 0awg running from my TIPM battery connection to my AUX power system. My load is just my two way radios 70A and my box fan that is 10A at high speed. And my 36V boost converter to charge my golf cart at 10A.

Btw , that 280watt panel in indirect sun fully charges my Jeeps battery to 14.8 every day by 9am (during the summer) Now I just need to save up enough $$ to replace the lifters and rocker arms. Got 3 or 4 lifters that are sticky until the engine gets up to temp. I would do a engine flush but just the flush kit with out the filters is $270.00. New lifters and rocker arms and valve cover gaskets is about $500.00 Currently living off of $2000.00 a month so it is going to take a while.

Agreed. Ray could add the solar charge controller system in pieces too. Start with the controller\charger first to get some protection to your battery, and some brains to the whole system. He would benefit VERY much by changing batteries to LiFePo4 as well. You can really pump them with juice way more than the AGM, and they discharge better too, not to mention a life span of around 10+ years vs around 5 for the AGM.

One thing to keep in mind about using the larger AGM battery. Make sure to check the battery manufacturers charge rate for the battery. Some of them require a lower charge amperage to prevent “drying” out the battery. This is a common mistake when people try to put in AGM batteries with vehicles that previously had regular/maintenance style batteries. Older vehicles don’t have battery management systems and the AGM batteries would fail quicker. That new battery also will likely have a temperature operating range that is more sensitive than a regular car battery. Just things to consider and think about. Not saying what you did was incorrect. Just take these things into the over all thought process. Good content as always.
@GReaper
@GReaper 10 ай бұрын
Some sources I've read say it's completely fine to just drop a AGM battery into most vehicles as most vehicles' charging systems aren't going to cause issues and they can handle higher charge current than a FLA can. I'm guessing these reads might be assuming a computer controlled regulator which most vehicles with OBDII are likely going to be (particularly post 2000 year models). I did that with my vehicle. It is a 2001 with a computer controlled regulator, so I'll find out in a few years. That's for the main battery though with a normal configuration. Ray's awesome setup is anything but "normal" though. LOL.
@handyman1957

Ray, another thing to keep in mind with your "Grid Tie" panels is that they are usually higher voltage than your typical off grid panel. Most grid tie panels run at around 45-65 volts dc and will need a special charge controller to run them off grid. I have been a RV solar tech for over 10 years and I have only found two manufactures that make these "special" controllers. First is Midnight Solar and the second is Victron. Those controllers are pretty expensive. If you don't use the right charge controller, it will fry the controller and could also burn your battery.

@handyman1957 10 ай бұрын
No, but a charge solar charge controller can do a better job at charging if it knows what temp the battery is at. An alternator does not care. Temp does matter, if the battery is too hot, the charge needs to be turned down so as not to over charge the battery. If the battery is cold, it can take a higher charge. You really want a battery to be "cool" as this is preferred.@@jecrpalier

Ray, if you plan on using your truck to power parts of your house, then you should have a transfer switch installed next to your main electrical panel. That way, you simply plug the truck's electrical output into the transfer switch and you will not need to run any extension cords for anything in your house. When an electrician installs the transfer switch, he'll install a bar on your main panel that you need to slide to prevent anyone from turning on the main power while the transfer switch is being used. This prevents your truck from sending power down the power lines and possibly electrocuting anyone working on a line. I had a transfer switch installed several years ago to plug in my gas-powered generator. Can't run the main home AC, but I can run a window unit and turn on anything in the house. Obviously, you conserve energy during a power outage and don't turn on anything that you don't need.

The problem with two alternators is not that they would "fight against each other", but due to tolerances they would not share the load evenly, but one of them (the one having a hair higher set voltage) will "haul" the whole load and the second one nothing until the first reaches its maximum. That means one of them would be heavily loaded most of the time and the second one slacking, causing the first to wear out way quicker. But if the load most of the time is not bigger than it used to be and what the original setup with a single alternator (so the motivation for the second alternator was jus to cover really exceptional cases), the reliability won't get worse than it was. But if the motivation was to regularly operate higher loads than the original setup was meant for, the uneven load distribution with twin alternator setup would lead to shorter alternator life. Of course, unless the ECU has provisions programmed in to balance the loading of both alternators, but I don't think that is the case here.

Back in the days when voltage regulators were external, and really weren't much more than a couple of voltage-sensitive (and sometimes current-sensitive) relays, having two alternators on the same system could cause a fight between the regulators that would wear out the contacts much faster. The tech has improved since then.

@RainmanRaysRepairs
@RainmanRaysRepairs 10 ай бұрын
Totally! that strip is good for 15a, the inverter has three other plugs if needed. Realistically, in the scenario that this system is designed for, I wouldn't be using more than 20a total. In a no power situation, I'm running one fan, my router (we usually have internet when power is out) two refrigerators and a deep freeze, plus some lights. We're talking an average amp draw of about 4-8 amp assuming that refrigerators are not all running at the same time. And its just for night time so I don't have to run the loud gas generator. During daylight or high power requirement, we run the regular generator.

You have a nice emergency power setup. The power strip may not able to handle all load plugged into it and it normally used for office where there low power load office equipments plugged into it. It probably only have 14 ga wiring in it which would possibly overheat and melt inside if several heavy duty power tools are plugged into it The inverter have several plugs on it (4 total?) where you are running all loads at once into a single plug on inverter. I would recommend that you take take long power strip out and install 4 separate power strip designed for power tools or home construction and plug all 4 separately into the inverter. This should balance the load evenly and reduce the the chance of wirings overheating inside the power strip since heavy duty ones should have 12 ga wiring in it. It would increase the safety factor of your setup. Awesome video as always and neat emergency setup you got there.

Those of us in Florida can never have too many ways to keep the power on especially when you have acreage and may need remote power. 👍 Ray!

P is Papa in the military phonetic alphabet. On that note, a commendation on most of your part number recitations you are right on with them. On another note: did I miss an install of a new video screen in the cabin of the DirtyMax? I see something new. Tell me about it.

I made my own strap wrench in a pinch when placing were closed I took a cheap extension and sliced it with a grinder enough to get a 7 rib fan belt though and winding that up is virtually endless and it’s strong and it grips

I think I saw you in your duelie Siveraaado heading west on SR64 near the Costco entrance yesterday in the late morning. Your auxiliary diesel fuel tank with the fuel nozzle makes your truck one of a kind in this area.

Did this filter swap on my 2001 LB7 (295,000 miles) a couple years ago. Before that I had added an electric lift pump to help the CP3 fuel pump I replaced.

Good upgrade and install on the cat fuel filter and adapter and spacer setup Raymond and I agree most people fail to prime the filter for the fuel or they don't bleed it properly or they brake the plastoc bleed screw off brass ones ware way better 40:57 @Rainman Ray's Repairs

I like the reserve power you made in the truck box. Only thing I would be concerned about is over heating the inverters. Maybe install some low amp fans to move some air to help cool?
