THANK YOU for posting this. Have a very similar German made heater in my mobile crane cab. Cold snap coming this week, and I really needed to get it working. Drained diesel, cleaned the line and filter, still no heat just smoke. This video finally helped me figure out what needed to be done. Took it apart and cleaned it up good this evening, and I have heat just in time for an icy work week!

Great video! First time I understood that the reason for the white smoke is that the flame did not start and the fuel is only grilled by the glow plug, due to the blocked little hole, which causes that there is no ignition flame and no real burning of the diesel

Well, I tore my heater apart three times before finding your video I saw 2 years ago. I had the white smoke out of the exhaust and intake. Cleaned it 3 times, more places each time, the fourth time I went directly after that little 1/8th inch ish hole by the screen, cleaned that out with carb cleaner and it fired right up. Thanks for the video, I now have a backup heater again.

I have tried for 2 weeks to get my heater working and no-one could give me advise to fix it but I then saw the title of this video was my problem so watched it and no-one had mentioned the little vent hole in the glow pin hole to me. I removed the glow pin, found and cleaned out the little hole and away it went. Thank you.

Billy Connolly does night heaters !! Great videos though I have to say. Ive had a few issues myself with carbon build up . I've found there is usually some other problem that leads to premature carbon build up like low power due to battery voltage being low in first place and further volts drop through over length wiring of wrong section cable or incorrect plumbing allowing air to hide in joints , filters and pumps . Brilliant heaters when installed and used correctly though .

It seems the brain thought the fan was going faster than it was and delivering to much fuel , hope this helps someone,keep up the great work. HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳

I had the same thing when the exhaust run on my heater in the garage was too long. Exhaust blocked and the heater got flooded. Unblocked exhaust, still a smoke machine. Figured the fuel air mix was off so I let it try to start and blew down the intake as hard as I could. Smoke, Smoke, smoke, POP! whooosh. Let it run as hot as possible and it was fine. It only took about 2 days for the smell of Diesel fog to dissipate....

Thank you. I've been wondering what goes on inside, it's basically a mini "salamander heater" we call it. Like a big orange job site heater with k1 in a tank on the bottom. It's like that but inside its own own heat exchanger. Brilliant
@DavidMcLuckie
@DavidMcLuckie 3 жыл бұрын
Kind of. Salamander, Torpedo, diesel space heaters use compressed air (compressor built into fan motor) to blow (through a nozzle) a mix of air and diesel which is then ignited. These little diesel heaters use the hot surface of the burn chamber to vapourise the diesel which then mixes with the air from the fan and burns inside. So they are similar in that they burn diesel, but have a long startup and shutdown compared to the Salamander which can deliver instant heat.
@unmountablebootvolume
@unmountablebootvolume 3 жыл бұрын
@@DavidMcLuckie Interesting! I always thought they use the same system as oil boilers and very large (>20kw) diesel air heaters, where the burner motor drives a combustion air blower and an oil pump, that sends high pressure oil/diesel to a nozzle, that sprays it into the burn chamber as a very fine mist. On such units, the air and combustion gasses are also seperated by a large tube heat exchanger.
@Ralphs-House
@Ralphs-House 6 ай бұрын
David, Also worth getting the burn chamber REALLY clean and bone dry by heating it up with a blow torch. Once cool, reassemble. Its amazing the clouds of smoke you'll get from very back of chamber with a blow torch (where its almost impossible to clean) and it gives an even greater chance of a successful start up. From what I've gleaned, the hidden part of the burn chamber is composed of a ring of welding blanket (carbon felt) which can absorb fuel like a wick. Its held in place with stainless steel mesh. After running rich or flooding, this felt no longer soaks up diesel because its become totally gummed up with soot and residue. It sets like concrete in there and the fuel can't catch fire and invariably drips out the exhaust or air inlet. Carb cleaner (or cellulose thinners) will definitely aid cleaning the burn chamber but the blowtorch is the surest way of restoring the absorbency of the carbon felt, and its super fast. You usually get flame out or E8 error after the white smoke which is often attributed to fuel when sometimes what it needs is a proper clean - and/or as in this case, clearing of blocked holes.

Came here because my heater on my Merc w211 had suddenly stopped working after we started having temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. Fortunately I figured out the issue today and boy was it foolish. The exhaust pipe had shifted off from it's hole on the bumper and its end was surrounded with 1 cm thick ice. After tearing it off and blow torching the ice off from the tube the Eberspächer started right up, but it smoked like hell for 15 minutes meaning the entire hood area was full of smoke including some smoke on the interior as well. To help others here were my symptoms: Heater fan and glow plug started normally via remote. After 30 seconds of running the diesel pump started clicking slowly. After 1.5 minutes the diesel pump and the fan gradually went crazy to the point where the clicking was really fast and the fan was super loud. After 2.5 minutes it just shut off the diesel pump and the fan started running low and quiet. If you are experiencing same type of behaving with your heater I'd recommend you to check out the exhaust pipe from both ends.

From my experience from same heater, if I use maximum pump speed, 5,4Hz it start sooting and after a while barely give any warm. And it would not start, only white smoke. If pump settings are 5.2Hz or lower then it goes on without problem. I think it does not got enough air to burner. Maybe fan speed tinkerin can help but some said that bearings will worn out quite fast if run 5000 rpm

It certainly makes sense. Running on low will build up carbon quicker. So maybe running it once per week at full power for 30 mins to give it a good blast of fuel and heat will keep it running good. Also a lot of people using old spoilt fuel will get this problem. Cheers friend 👍👍

So. I just faced down my demonic smoke belcher and might have been victorious. I blew in the intake as somebody mentioned, not plugged solid. Had already replaced glow screen and the plug today as it was damaged from overheating itself. Blasted a bunch of electronics cleaner in the glow hole followed by compressed air previously. Shot it with more tonight, rammed the plug in and set it to go. Sprayed carb cleaner up the intake a few times and got nice fireballs a few times. Noted chunks of cokey soot rattling out the exhaust. Got nicely heated up and seemed to quit smoking so bad. I had left the shroud off and it went E05 overheat which may have further contributed to self cleaning. Now its actually heating up again and all but zero smoke.... wow.

Hi David love the videos , here's a good one for you , I have a Chinese 5 kw 2 months old 300 hours use now , past few weeks seems slower to light and smoke for few minutes then lights ,now the mystery is I can smell the grey smoke coming out of the blower vents , I've checked its not from the very end of exhaust outside ,I looked underneath and its leaking right near were it joins the base / manifold outlet ,I've re done the exhaust nice strong super clamp even a wee bit of paste ,but it still puffs out a tricle of grey diesel smoke which is pulled into the gap were the silicone gasket is ,the silicone gasket is also brittle and broken only 2 months old !, any ideas were this smoke could be coming from ? I re tight end exhaust clamps 3 times to check ,it wasn't them it seems nearer the very base of the alloy exhaust pipe ,can they crack ? Its bizarre,and dangerous suppose not using it obviously till fixed , I can not see any cracks in the exhaust port ,the clamp was tight on the exhaust tube no play , I think its been doing this a while but I only can smell and see it when its starting up, Starts up .. glow plug on ,pump on ,then grey smoke then maybe 2 minutes it fires up and runs ok , the smell goes away from blower vents but I guess it could still be emitting invisible gases once its running warm , any ideas I remain baffled 😀

If your combustion gasses are mixing with the hot air you might have a leak/crack in the heater housing that seals up again once hot. Or one of the gaskets that seal the combustion chamber could have failed and is also leaking. Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm?

The smoke may be coming from the fuel pipe seal not sure yet till I put new seals on and test ,seems very odd the seals look like rubber to me, and the smell I was getting was like sunburnt diesel rather than exhaust smell

I have a D1LC and a D1LCC, The D1LCC had a fan with worn out bearings so had a noisy fan and I think it overheated as it currently does nothing when switched on so I think the ECU has locked out. Ordered a 801 controller to diagnose it/unlock the ECU. The D1LC has a good fan, starts up has a lot of white smoke. I swapped the burn chamber/heat exchanger over and it wouldn't pump fuel. I swapped the flame sensor over and it fires but doesn't produce hot air but the exhaust gets hot and the pump and fan are running at max. Tried running on paraffin and old white diesel. during shutdown when the pump stopped and the fan speed reduced slightly hot air started being produced. It's as it the fan is cooling the heat exchanger to much. The D1LC doesn't have a magnet/hall effect sensor so the ECU doesn't seem to have a way of monitoring the fan speed. Shame it doesn't work as I want to stop using my calor gas heater in my 20ft container workshop as refill prices are getting silly.

Turns out the heat exchanger was heavily coked up with soft carbon soot, not sure if it was from running it on paraffin for the last few runs.

Hi David, Ive got a heater with the water heat exchanger built in, from Alibaba, works great, but im wondering if its possible to fit a controller from one that doesnt have the water pump control built in, as id rather control this exterally, and the controller it came with isnt the best with chinese writing etc.
@DavidMcLuckie
@DavidMcLuckie 3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to swap out the entire ECU and controller as the burner part of the heater is just the standard kind.

There might also be a presure regulator in the heater. It is a round rubber disk. If it has a hole, You will get same symptoms. The presure regulator evens out the changing presure from the pump, before the fuel reach the nozzle.

At the start of the video you said that the person that sent the heater to you claimed it was new and it had never run …???.. clearly it was a very well used heater being operated by somebody who had no idea what they where doing with the settings for the burn control causing this problem of over fuelling the combustion chamber . Apart from that what a great video for all those do it your selfies .. nice job .. 😊

If you remove the glow plug , and use brake cleaner, and carburetor cleaner with straw sometimes will clean up enough to get it hot . The carbon is acting like a space shuttle heat tile. Due to faulty controller shutdown developed this carbon condition And thank you autozone

I had similar malfunction after burning 300 liters of diesel, I'm cleaning it every 1,5 months, but this time she (it's a girl) didn't fire up, white smoke, cars stopped to see what's going on, as smoke poured out of my cellar (use it for home heating) Opening up that little 3mm hole near the glow plug made all the difference, as I didn't clean it before, she started right up after cleaning.

if you put the exhaust paste , away from the edge of the outlet pipe , you avoid any paste being scraped into the exhaust , causing an obstructing , i think thats what happened here.

Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to do this full diagnostic... I'm having a similar issue although mine ran for months before I had problems. I have found a lot of carbon build up inside the exhaust pipe... When it was burning fine, I didn't notice any smoke at all... So I'm not sure why it is burning so poorly. When its on full blast the internal combustion chamber gets nice and hot, between 170-210 Celsius... I'm only at 1300 m elevation. My controller doesn't allow me to change the hz... I either can have it on the standard settings, or change it to alpine mode for 1500m+. Since I'm below 1500M I haven't ever run it on alpine mode... Once last week, it smoked everything up and then got E8. Cleaned out the exhaust by wacking the metal pipe against the ground, and used a tooth brush to attempt to get stuff out of the muffler... Got it running really hot again and it was fine, until today. Now I think I need to pull the entire thing apart and clean everything out...

I’m getting a weird white solid build up in the combustion chamber and white smoke pouring out the exhaust. I’ve stripped and rebuilt and it works every time for about 2 week before the same build up comes back. Run on red and white diesel with no additives. Only other time I’ve seen build up like it was with a blocked dpf on a car. Exhaust doesn’t seem to be restricted at all. Any ideas?

I had problems with my diesel heater and I thought it was a faulty fuel pump so I installed a new pump, after all they are cheap on ebay.... but my problem turned out to be the silly little hose clips letting air into the suction line from the fuel tank. I fixed the air leaking hose and the heater worked great for its test, but on holidays using it, it started smoking and got so bad it could not be used. Once home I removed the heater and got a repair kit I did not need....and pulled the heater apart and got maybe a cup full of oily soot from its insides.....I had been running it on low mostly so concluded it should be put on high every now and again to burn itself clean.... That is when I watched a video on just how the fuel pump size controls the air fuel mixture....and sure enough I had installed a larger pump..... I installed my original pump and were thinking I might have to pull the heater out again to clear the soot build up when I got the idea of using a 12v matteress inflatar to blow extra air into the heater combustion air intake and see if it could burn it clean, and it worked a treat....with the heater thermostat set to maximum I removed the combustion air intake filter and blew the extra air in.....and it roared and smoked like crazy but heated up and burnt itself clean..... It has been working like new again and had hours of use since.... So don't try using anything but air to feed the combustion air supply, if the heater is smoking. Of course this is no substitute for someone that knows what they are doing programming the air fuel mix in the advanced program settings of the thermostat.

My one drips oil from the intake but only when it is run on a mixture of engine oil and diesel, doesn't do it when run on strait diesel, any suggestions on what may be going on, it is a new heater with the new controller like the black one in this video only it has a spanner emblem where the others have a asterisk, none of the codes work only 1234 and it gives you some strange settings.

Had a similar thing happen to mine kept getting EO 8 then EO10 took the exhaust pipe off because it was running OK just fitted the exhaust with paste (whoops bit too much blocked the exhaust), cleaned the exhaust then tried again with an air pump on the inlet just for a few seconds then it fired up been running OK now turned it down to 3,4 ghz. So warning do not use too much exhaust paste.

HELLOOOOOO! My Vavoer "8K" is a year old. Now throws ERROR 10, smokes like a Cummins, refuses to ignite. Replaced glow plug, same. Took it apart, was super clean inside, except a hard grey ash way down in the bottom of the burn chamber. Picked and 3 tbsp. of that out, looks clean as a whistle now. Soaked in a good carb cleaner, allowed to fully dry, reassembled. Still no joy. Am thinking that the catalyst screen in the burn chamber must be gone or ruined - everything else checks out right as rain. Your thoughts, please?

Replaced screen in glow plug chamber. I'm referring to something I'd heard of another mesh screen in the belly of the actual main burn chamber, if there is such a thing. Otherwise, I am completely stumped.
