thank You. that's mean I have to get it fom there. You are the man with the knowledge, so I would like to ask You to make a video " How to do a smoke test on D5 engine by using DIY Smoke mashine." my engine works not nice. I think I have an air leak some where. there is a few videos demonstrating how to make and use it. but they are on American cars or doesn't say where to conect the pipes to engine. And I know if You would make one, it would be fully explained. thanks a lot

You're welcome. It would certainly be interesting to see leak results directly before and after a purge. I meant to do that myself but ran out of time. On the Diesel Purge video, I tried not to be too over the top about it and what it can do but it's seriously good stuff and you won't regret it. The difference is immediately noticeable and believe it or not, actually gets better over time. I think it's to do with the ECU adapting to the new flow rates. I've done maybe 10 cars now and the positive reaction is the same every time.

Great vid thanks. Should even new or refurbed injectors leak a little or should they be completely dry if you do this test? I have a misfire from cold start on a Freelander Td4 with 130k on the engine. 1 leaks practically nothing while the other 3 returned only maybe 10ml in 5 mins idling. Would this indicate its not an injector leak/pressure issue?

are you able to tell if its the seals or injector thats away from this test? xc90 starts fine but down on power and puddle round one of the injector wells

Brilliant tutorial once again, 2 quests:- had you to code the ebay injector to the ecu on your car & if yes what did you use ? many thanks from Helga (2004 V70 D5 P2 AWD Estate) and me.

Because it is a Euro 3 D5 and the replacement injector was the same Class as the other injectors, everything was plug and play with no software required.

If you just use a long piece of hose you can see within 20 seconds tops which injectors need a new valve. Its a simple test: which return valve is pushing the most fluid out. I just put a rubber band round the open ends and stick them in a single bottle.

wozzlepop Good tip. Can you tell me what pipes have to be plugged to stop air. the one on the end of fuel rail what about the other end of pipe that goes into pump?

The name of my seller escapes me but I know of several who have bought injectors from Huddersfield Volvo Breakers either direct or through eBay with no problems.

good vid ..but when u emptied out the plastic fule lines did u get anywhere near the 40ml i wonder ..interesting that they were different though indicates that there were differences in what was going into the cylindar

Even with the fuel left in the tubing, they were all still well below 40ml, so within tolerance. The leak back variance can be caused by minute differences between the wear of mechanisms within the injector. Also, different amounts of carbon build up on the tips can affect fuel flow at the point of spraying into the cylinder. It's not realistic to expect every injector to wear at exactly the same rate so as long as the variance isn't too high across the board, the ECU can make +/- corrections to flow and ensure equal power is produced by each cylinder.

Can faulty injectors cause vibration, I have checked all mounts and they are good but on inlet or low revs car vibrates could it be the injectors making engine run rough. Al

I would be very surprised if injectors are causing your vibration. Connecting even cheap diagnostics can give you info as to which part of the engine isn't running right. There's quite a lot that can cause your issue. Also you have poly bushes fitted, they will transmit vibration noticeably even on an otherwise sweet running engine.

I have a bit of a noise from gear box like it's the flywheel bearing would this cause vibration

I don't get it. Why is it good that it does not leak back? Is it not designed to to leak back? Bt the way, my d5 is starting to smell like unburned diesel, and it is vibrating, sometimes, i am sure it is an injector fault, but do not know how to test any of them...

Rob, i take it the 3mm is the ID of the pipe? Need to test my wife's S60 D5 which has just got a starting issue, thanks to you i was able to test and replace 2 of the glow plugs but this hasn't made any difference. Next is a leak off test. Thank you very much for your videos.

Scott Raven You're welcome Scott. Yes, 3mm is the I.D......about £1 a metre from B&Q last time I checked. At UK temperatures, failed glow plugs won't really affect cold starting if everything else is good so you're more likely to be on the right track with fueling causing an issue.

Hi Rob, ive just done the leak off test as per this video. Injector number 5 is at fault, it filled up to the 40mm mark in 1.15 second's the other 4 injectors didn't hardley put any fuel into the bottles so looks like they are all in very good condition. Now to try and find a good injector on ebay. Thanks again mate, you have been a massive help.

Scott Raven No problem and at least you have a conclusive answer. Is it a Euro 3 D5 (black engine cover) or Euro 4 (Silver/Grey cover)?

It has the black engine cover mate (52 reg), its on 126k with full history but its never had any suspension parts replaced so i have just bought engine mounts (after watching your "popping video", bottom wishbones, rear shocks and a service kit from Volvo.

Scott Raven There's videos for all of those jobs so hopefully they'll come in useful. When fitting the new injector, make sure everything is spotless and definitely fit a new copper washer. I bought a bag of these from Amazon which are the correct dimensions for the Euro 3 163 www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B009NDBXVU/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1 On eBay, Huddersfield Volvo Breakers are an excellent seller and will hopefully see you right. Also on the Euro 3, check the injector classification and try to get one that matches the remaining 4 left in the engine. There's Class 1,2 and 3 identifiable by the last number of the part number on top of the injector.

Great video, I bought some 3mm internal dia. Pipe but it does not fit, does it need to be 3mm external diameter?

3mm was the internal diameter on my poly piping but I don't know the external diameter. That obviously depends on the thickness of the lining. My pipe was from B&Q.

Just measure the hole in the top of the injector instead. I don't have any pipe at the moment.

I tried this on my E4 185 d5. Diesel was pouring out of the small nipples on the return line ?? Is this normal ? My local stealer says it's the case because my d5 has an electronic fuel pump ? Any help appreciated m8

If you want, you can just clamp the return pipe after the number 5 leak off connection. It's nothing to do with the pump.👍

What is the purpose of this test. To see how much comes back from the injector I guess, only why does any come back though? Is it the design to provide some kind of relief valve system in case the ECU is over supplying the fuel?

You always want more fuel available than is needed for when you increase speed or load on the engine so leak back within a certain tolerance is normal, 40ml in a minute on mine. A higher leak back or none at all indicates a problem.

injectors dont always use all the fuel supply therefore this uneeded fuel needs to be returned to the fuel system or pump

James Barratt to answer the question that others have avoided to tell the exact reason. the injectors need to be lubricated as it a heavy moving parts. it has nothing to do with demand.

Should you measure the volume of fuel in the pipes too? Or should you maybe fill the pipes then start the test?

SiRobb Well it would make some difference. If the tubes are empty, the volume of fluid collected in the bottles would be less, as the empty tubes need to be filled with fluid first.

Aman A Ok, well let's look at your question another way. The purpose of the test is to measure what comes out of the injectors. Everything that is in the pipe has come out of the injector so I'm confused as to why you're asking. The reason I say it makes no difference is that you've given me no information about the pipework you're using so I'm assuming a pipe length and diameter that wouldn't really affect the results. As said in the video, you're looking for

I done the test and 3 of my bottles filled up within 30 seconds, I was also getting low fuel rail pressure, could the injectors leaking back cause a low fuel rail pressure, thanks for the video, it helped a lot

Excessive leaking injectors can be a cause of low cranking rail pressure so a good place to start.

Hi, I have a volvo V70 D5 Euro 4 (2007), just had one fuel injector replaced, and all worked fine for half of the day suddenly the car is now vibrating on idle/park. I have had the codes read and it shows nothing. Am wondering what this could be and how can it be fixed. Thanks

J G Did you program in the new injector? If not, this needs doing on a Euro 4 either with Vida or via a main dealer software download.

Hi SiRobb, thanx for your quick response. The mechanic actually removed/cleaned and reused the old injector. I asked him about reprogramming and he said there was no need. But judging at how the car is vibrating , am having second thoughts.

Could a misbehaving injector throw the car into limp mode and also cause "soot filter full, see manual" warning message ? I was going to go for a DPF remove and delete but now think the injector could be the cause ? Will it be worth removing the injectors and having them tested ?

If you have a a soot filter full message, you've either got a full soot filter or a misreading which can be caused by a faulty dpf pressure sensor. I suppose a poorly running fuel system could accelerate a dpf filling up but to be honest, you really need a proper diagnostic hook up and someone who knows what they're doing. Sensors and injector performance can be assessed in minutes with the right equipment. You might get lucky guessing and swapping parts but it can get very expensive quickly.

+SiRobb it has been hooked up but only showed "DPF restriction" no error codes ?? The guy said it was strange as there was no codes logged for anything else that explains limp mode. He reckons the vida reading and sound of engine gives him reason to recommend the injector test. Plus emissions are spot on and no sign of black exhaust smoke ?

+SiRobb he said they need to be removed and sent to an injector place to be compression tested. I had hoped my attempt at the leak back test would confirm a problem injector before I part with £100 to have them compression tested

Cold as that's when an excessively leaking injector causes the most problems.

There will be some kind of fuel return built in to them so I don't see why not. I don't know the flow figures though.

Bare in mind, just because an injector passes a leak back test does not mean that it is good. It is only one test. An injector can still leak fuel into the engine, inject more or less fuel than it should and also have a very poor spray pattern. After 100k miles any of what I mentioned is possible. Great video apart from that though.
