In today’s video we see the 3 ways that a pressure washer can damage a diesel particulate filter. To do this test I first cut open an old DPF and cut it into small pieces, and then we look at where the damage will occur. Watch and find out!

Also, how about backflushing the DPF using compressed air? You could get to each channel separately (if you cut the filter housing and then weld it back together) and most compressors do only 8 or 10 bar of pressure, so that wouldn't be that damaging I guess.

Hi, thanks for watching, and for bringing up a very valid point! If I end up with a DPF that is no good for anything else, then a full-size test will be done. The important thing to note however is that almost all DPFs now have integrated catalysts, and a pressure washer will definitely ruin them.

@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomasglace6999 Hi, 2008 was in the transition period so it really depends on local laws and model release cycles. Sometimes you can tell by looking at the housing (or a diagram of it) and if there is a temperature sensor one third of the way along it, then there is more than just the DPF ceramic material in there.

Funny I’ve cleaned my filters on my truck three times with high pressure water and did not damage them . Every 200 thousand miles
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! It is a bit different with a truck as you can get good access to everything. With a lot of cars the filter is only accessible via a strangely angled pipe, so it is impossible to evenly spray the ceramic or even see how close you are or what kind of job you are doing - so the danger of spraying too much on the weaker adhesive material is much greater.

Hi, thanks for watching! A lot of DPFs are very enclosed in their housing with only a 2 - 3 inch inlet pipe - which makes knowing how far away the jet is, and what is being pointed at pretty challenging - especially with water and gunk flying straight back at you. Hi, it will be interesting to see what comes out. I would hang up the pipes and let them dry out for a couple of days after the cleaning to make sure that there isn't a lot of water being turned to steam when the engine starts up - and even then 10 minutes at idle might be a good idea before driving. It will be an experiment for sure, but might be one that is worthwhile compared to the normal 'fix' which is to buy new units.

Hi, if it is done at a bit of a distance and carefully to avoid the ceramic glue between modules, and only done to back-wash the filter then it can definitely work. The problem can be where you can't see what you are doing due to bends in the exhaust pipe etc. The other thing to avoid is hitting the catalyst material with high pressure as you will rip the precious metals off and send them down the drain!

Why is the filter orange in the middle? When I washed my filter a bit of orange/light brown came out. I used alcohol and a low pressure water beam.
@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! The orange/red is ash residue, which was left over from my previous video where I hit this piece of filter with the gas torch. A few minutes with the gas torch was enough to remove all of the black soot, but it wasn't enough to remove the ash residue. The different shades of ash depend on what it is made from - more red is probably more iron oxide (from the iron/steel in the engine), and more of a white shade probably indicates more phosphates/sulfates (from engine oil).

@StevenBTuner
@StevenBTuner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching and I'm glad you like the vids! If that 'deposits' number is that high just after a regen, then I would say that your filter is getting quite clogged up with ash. Has your car done more than 200,000kms? Also, 300kms between regens sounds very low too, which indicates that there is less and less room in the filter for the soot to accumulate between active regeneration cycles.
@Andy_83_SWE
@Andy_83_SWE 3 жыл бұрын
@@StevenBTuner Hi Ok so a manual cleaning might be in it's place. No "deposits in FAP" doesn't get to zero after a regen, so I think that number is what's left and can't get rid of.
