Supplemental Coolant Additives, also known as DCA's, are extremely important to protect your engine block from cavitation, that threatens to poke holes in your cylinder walls, and erode water pumps. This video discusses Ford's protocol for Supplemental Coolant Additives that are used to prevent cativation from occurring in your coolant system.

You should make a playlist “things to know before you buy a diesel”.

Great video. I bought a 2001 F-350 Superduty 7.3 new. I've been aware the SEA issue and have always added the Ford Supplement to my Prestone Green Coolant. However, never knew about the test strips. Thanks.

Good details and video. In my 7.3 IDI I run the uncharged green, with the Ford supplement, with test strips that specifically check molydbate, nitrite, levels. Not sure about simply checking with strips that says ‘SCA’s’. I suspect those test strips are for later diesels.

That's just right! SCA's are supplemental coolant additives which is what you're adding with the Ford supplement. It sounds like you're taking good care of that 7.3 IDI

Can you put a link to where you get the coolant and the additives

Is it normal for temp gauge to get up to 1/4 when it’s really hot outside? Mine normally stays really really low

Gold coolant is a no no for OBS 7.3s. And really really 99 superduty engines. Something to do with the o ring materials

Good to know! I'd hope that the new injector O-rings would be updated by now and not have any compatibility issues with even with the gold coolant these days.

Where did you get that test kit?

I was able to just purchase mine at the local NAPA, though it looks like you can find similar stuff online. Fleetguard and Wix also appear to have similar versions as well.

This is really bad - I have a 1998 E350 Direct Injection 7.3 L Powerstroke with the original green coolant that it came from factory with. I have added a little green coolant over the years to top off but have never drained it or added the sca to it! I have 125K miles on the engine. I better test strip it and probably change the coolant out/put in the additive.

New to 7.3 world, what is good air cleaner to have. Heard K&N is not good air cleaner. What do you recommend.

Welcome to the 7.3 world! If you're looking for a filter that will give you a little more performance and still filter extremely well, look into getting a NAPA 6637 air filter. They aren't hard to install, remove the old air box, keeping the long flexible hose that runs from the airbox to the engine, just use a 4 inch piece of exhaust piping and a couple of hose clamps to hold it together. That's the setup I currently have, and from the research I've done, it flows good quantities of air and still filters well. It's probably not as good as a K&N from a performance standpoint, but it's way cheaper, and filters way better which is essential to ensuring the life of your 7.3. There are a good number of resources on the web with people installing the NAPA 6637. I have a video up on my channel that compares the AFE washable filter to the NAPA 6637 if you're interested. Happy shopping!

Rnddiesel thank you for air cleaner response. Do you have any videos on changing clutch and pressure plate. This used truck I picked up has bad clutch. The pedal almost touches the floor before I can put in to gear.

@@Notellemkrik1776 Unfortunately I don't have any clutch videos. My truck has the automatic transmission, and thankfully that hasn't needed replacing with a ZF5 as of yet...The most I've done with clutches is replace a couple Ford 9n tractor clutches, but that's a bit easier than on a truck. You may want to check the clutch reservoir, make sure it has plenty of fluid in it. It may also somehow have air in the clutch line and may just need bleeding to fix the pedal. Also look and see if the slave cylinder is leaking. If its going bad that can cause the clutch to go to the floor. My 88 Comanche has a leaky slave cylinder and it has the same problem as your truck, but it works fine on the ranch. You may have an external slave cylinder, and replacing that would be much easier than having to drop the transmission. Best of luck!

The K&N does let dust through which is bad for the 7.3; between not fitting well in the airbox and just being more porous overall. The 6637 style is the way to go for filtering for sure. I run the Donaldson equivalent, and can tell you after 3 years (and 2 major wildfires) later my intake duct was incredibly clean. If you search for the 6637 on Amazon, you'll find the "recommended items" will be the clamps & tubing to do the install.
