Ronnie Fixer Me too! Most of the ones one can find here in Ontario are rotten with rust, and seriously overpriced. I'd love to snag one with a good body and swap in a newer drivetrain.

Great build Nate. Been thinking about doing this swap in my 98xj for a couple weeks prior to u putting up the first video. Perfect timing haha! Can u maybe do a video at some point about which year Mercedes to use and or some technical info on adapters and other things I'll need and to watch out for. There's a few of those cars for sale locally around $1000. From 1980-1986. Any help would be great. Good job btw. Ur a good addition to the bleepin Jeep crew.!

Matt Uebelacker this is a great idea, I should do a video that includes some of this information. 85 is the last year of the om617, after that the bolt pattern for the bellhousing changes. For some reason there is way more adapter plates being made for the om617 than the new Mercedes diesel engines. Thank for watching Matt! I appreciate the support!

Not enough clearance tends to hurt the compression in the least I believe. That's a good fix, adjust them as recommended. Not much else to do on a Diesel.

Why would they get tighter? Wouldn't wear and tear cause them to become looser? Good video.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 6 жыл бұрын
Vibration can affect the locking threads of both nuts as well. Little by little they could tighten even though some wear is occurring on the lobes and valve. The point of the most adjustment effect would be the two nuts/threads compared to wear on the other parts. Solid lifters tend to need adjusting due to the method of adjustment mechanism for the most part. Some can tighten while others could loosen. All of these were tight fit so could have been the previous mechanic...
@dm-zx7xb
@dm-zx7xb 6 жыл бұрын
Jon Rissman I believe they tighten because the head of the valve is captured in the cylinder and there is continuous tension between the head of the valve and where the keepers hold the spring to the stem. So basically the stem stretches due to being such thin metal, from being under continuous tension, heat cycles, and being slammed open and shut all the time.
@Camofodge
@Camofodge 6 жыл бұрын
As the valves open and close they will cause wear and this will cause the valve to be higher in the valve seats, making the valves tighter

My OM617 has a really crappy idle, like one cylinder keep missing. It causes a big shudder/ vibration every time.
@BalanBro2
@BalanBro2 2 жыл бұрын
Have you checked your valve clearance? If it's too tight, your valve won't seal properly and you'll basically lose compression in that cylinder.

Other than gas millage, what’s the pros for this engine swap? If I remember right the om617 only had 100hp and 120tq? The 4.0 doesn’t have as great of gas millage but it does have much more power in theory.
@ddcraun
@ddcraun 6 жыл бұрын
TREVOR DAVIS the 3L turbo diesel makes about 130 hp and about 200lb/ft. It won't be as quick to rev, but if you play with the turbo a little, and dial in the injector timing it will be a bit more peppy. Just don't go too far on these as they WILL melt pistons if you try to treat them like a 12v Cummins
@trevordavis4728
@trevordavis4728 6 жыл бұрын
ddcraun so it has the same numbers as a 4.0 then, but it has incredible mpg. Ive been looking at diesel swaps for my 4.2, but I’ve dialed my current engine so well it’s like a stock 4.0 so I feel like the om won’t have enough power for what I want.
@natebleepinjeep9564
@natebleepinjeep9564 6 жыл бұрын
The 4.2 i removed only made about 112 horse power. This Om617a made about 128 horsepower. Being a engine with a turbo it has alot of potential waiting to be unleashed! I plan on a intercooler and turning up the boost a bit. People build these to make pretty good power actually. (200ish horses 300ftlbs) I don't plan on getting to crazy. Maybe shooting for 160 horse. I want to do a unique build on the cheap and in this instance the om617 fit the bill! Thank for watching!!

Nate Bleepinjeep sweet. I guess the only thing about modifying diesels is the black soot it produces after you do it😂. I’m fine with it, I just feel like I’ll coal someone out on accident lol. Cool build, I’d love to see what you can do with this old merc motor. I know a lot of people do the swap, there just not very many instructional videos so keep it up!
