Good to hear that you ARE an Eagle Scout. I earned mine in 1986 and my son did in 2018. A three generation scouting heritage. Our troop had several wood pile burning service projects since of our members was a heavy equipment operator. There was a town sewage upgrade going on and many trees had to be removed and disposed of. The company could have paid to get them chewed up, but the man in our troop talked them into having our troop do a controlled burn on a property and they donated to our troop. It saved the excavation company some money and we had a troop fund raiser doing fire watch. We ended up making 10 smaller fires around the piles and the man would stop by with an escavator to pile on the big stuff. Some of the scouts used the wood to make shelters and stay in them overnight. We were in town, but I did not see any difference between that and being out in the woods, so I signed off on their wilderness survival merit badge requirement. We made solar stills, snares, purified water to drink and other things. We made fun out of it. The scouts got some money for camp. You should do the same as part of your time management. I am sure you have better things to do and make a situation where the boys can earn their way to camp or trips. By the way, one of our scouts was impressed with the front end loader and the dozer that he was hired by that escavation company after he graduated from high school. He is now working for the New York State DOT. He did not earn his Eagle Rank, but as an adult leader, that is not our goal to crank out Eagles, but rather train up the boys to be good men, workers, fathers, and community leaders. If they end up earning their Eagle rank, then good for them. I actually was wondering if you were going to used "Boy Scout Water" on the wood pile.

I was a Life Scout. In one of our Camporees we had fire starting with flint and steel , also with board and bow. I was able to start my fire (flint/steel) in 12 seconds. we used a burnt baby diaper and dry cedar bark. All three of our competitor team got our fires going...11,12 and 13 seconds; the only fires started! Other teams used the official Boy Scout kit! Our board and bow team got one going in 45 seconds with the second man quitting before time was called. A lot of fun and educational! Now brush burners allowed. Good job DC. Keep them coming. Greg

Off today's topic, but you're talking about flooring your shop with (presumably)crushed limestone. I would suggest that you pave half of the floor or so with concrete, and do the other side with crushed and compacted stone. Why? who really wants to crawl around under a vehicle on gravel? On the other side, the stone would be mainly for tracked vehicles. Always enjoyable, and informative...reminds me of my own mindset and adventures 50 years ago! Do I detect a note of vise grip garage in tool choice? I like it too!
@DieselCreek
@DieselCreek 4 жыл бұрын
That entire building is going to be primarily for storage after I get the big shop built. And gravel isn’t ideal for crawling around on but I beats the heck out of mud! I can top coat it with 1A and it will be a good fine gravel

I like the idea of using a propane weed burner to start a fire. I use diesel fuel because it soaks in to the brush if you let it set for a little while before lighting it. And it doesn't flash like gasoline.

@@RANDALLOLOGY Do you know them to begin with? In my old troop, we were required to tie the knot correctly 10 times in a row. If you messed it up, you have to start over again until the know was properly mastered. Once that was done, the scout had to teach another scout or person. I had them tie the know with their eyes closed so they had to feel the knot being tied. When on a camp out, this skill became very useful in the dark. After the scouts got a signature for knowing how to tie the knots, they seldom forgot how to tie them even decades later. We also taught the older scouts knot inversions. For example a slippery overhand knot, working end goes around a tree and is then stuck up through the SOK hole and inverted into a bowline knot when the working end is tightened. Another knot is a Larks head, and working end of another rope is inserted up through the loops, and the loop is inverted to form a square knot. Our troop scouts were so good, they were asked to run knot stations on camp outs. (Scouts should be doing this instead of the adults anyway) We also had 10 foot lengths of rope issued to new scouts as part of their uniforms. Each patrol had their own rope color to signify what patrol they were in. They used them to tie up sleeping bags, haul wood, lashing, clothe lines and etc. Eagle Scouts got red, white, and blue Eagle rope. One old scout patrol (Leadership Corp in my time) bought nylon tubular webbing instead of rope, so they always had their rappelling harness, carabiner, and decender ready for a jump. Their idea and us adults liked their initiative so they were instructed to turn in their reciept for the purchase and the troop paid for them. Hope your happy now, I am going to be thinking of scouts for a while.

the skid steer in fast forward was great lol. I was bad with fire as a kid... My neighbor used to have camp fires every day in the summer, I used to stir up the embers the next day, get a hot stick, and start fires in my woods... My dad was not happy- don't know why I never got in trouble for it... We had a few small impromptu camp fires :) I guess my dad never got mad cause he never told me not to do that, even though I knew it was probably wrong lol. I am taking a lesson from that, trying not to get mad at my kids for doing things I never told them not to do.

If you have an auger style drill bit you can predrill the stumps to help them on the slow burn to self destruction. They have the energy to burn up but also have an energy drain in the form of the water so have to cook the water out and a cheat to speed it up is to simply drill a hole in the center to give a smoldering fire a place to burn stopping the need to burn from the outside in.

@@DieselCreek Really? 25% of my high school graduating class were Eagle Scouts or active in scouts. We made scouting popular. All of scouts from the local 15 troops/ 2 Explorer Posts got together and if someone talked poorly of scouts, they had to deal with our wrath. They either shut up or joined a troop or Explorer Post. We had some jocks pick on one of our tenderfoot scouts. We declared war on those jocks. There were 10 of us older scouts that would pick a weekly fight with the jocks. In our high school, if you were involved in a fight, you could not play sports that week. I started the fight with 4 our them and while in the principals office I asked for a clarification of the disciplinary action. The principal said, "No Sports" for one week for fighting. I looked at the jocks and told them to make things right with one of my scouts, or they do not play for the season and they can kiss away any scholarships as graduating seniors. One held out for 6 weeks, but the other three got things right with the tenderfoot the next day. Everybody in school heard about it the next day and the teachers thought it was hilarious. My dad got a call from the coach and one hold outs parents, but he said that you pissed off one of our Senior Patrol Leaders and he is resourceful to bring about change. So it set a precedent in my school not to piss off a scout.

I need to do this. Have a bunch of brush laying around from the past couple years of clearing ground and cleaning up fallen trees. Looks like your situation is the same as mine, no power and no water close by. You didn't discuss your plan to deal with a fire that might get out of hand or if winds picked up. My guess is since no water you would use the skidsteer to bury it with some dirt. I've been wanting to pick up a 275 gallon tote and rig a 12v powered pump on it to use as a portable water tank with a pressure washer or as standby for burning brush like you did here. That might make a good topic for a future video Matt.

Giving you extreme hard start if the engine is left for a while. Some engines had a non return in the line as well look in the banjo fittings as well.. Also that old tractor you have at the back of the fire,, you have the spears exposed,, don't forget to cover them in grease to stop them rusting or that will do the seals in real quick, if you ever try and use them

Got to tell you I quit Dirt Monkey cause of the music [and drama]. That said I really like the band on your channel, and your low key look at life. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

I’m not at all against burning the brush to get rid of it. When I see wood piles now, I want to turn it all into compost material. I’ve got some of that going at my house. Also, I don’t have any of the equipment you have, and that’s ok as well.

50 foot rule between the fire and propane tank. You'd be amazed how many tickets I have written for that.
