I still got this as an adult, it's a very delicate balance between sleep, food and training. Too little of the first two or too much of the second and I go from a perfectly fine diet to absolutely no food is safe near me. Like I'll eat (just about) anything, very binge-like, where-as I have no issues 99% of the time.

No wonder I've been so ravenous these past few days. I can't seem to have 8hrs of straight solid sleep each night. I wake up after 3-4 hours of sleep and then take a significant amount of time to fall back to sleep again.

So excited to see Nation Treasure ™ Dr Karl - and that you loved him. There's a whole generation of Australians who have grown up with Dr Karl answering weird science questions and of course, debunking myths. He even won an ig-noble prize for studying why belly button lint is blue (not ground-breaking science, but still a question no one had an answer for which is the true spirit of science). Fun fact, he has a whole wardrobe of colourful shirts, all sewn by his wife.

As someone with type 1 diabetes, releasing absolutely no insulin or very little insulin will make the fat (and maybe some muscle) come right off! *flashbacks to wasting away before diagnosis 💀 * If you have a properly working pancreas, please enjoy all the carbs you can! 😭 I really miss being able to just eat chips and salsa with abandon. And quality sleep really is so important for the hormones. Poor sleep can make keeping blood sugar in range so much more difficult. Ugh.

@isabellescantlandlebel3510
@isabellescantlandlebel3510 2 жыл бұрын
@@meganmcarthur899 I'm not an expert but I think in the case of diabetes type 1 where you produce no insulin at all, your cells can't take up and use glucose at all and so it stays in your blood and part is lost through urine. Then since you can't use calories from glucose your body has no choice but to break down fat and muscle for energy. So I guess in that sense you could say that insulin is partly responsible for fat gain, but you would be dead before long without it as it would lead to hyperglycemia. For people without diabetes, who always have enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels, even if they are on full keto, higher or lower 'spikes' won't make any difference on fat gain. Whether high or low carb, it's the total calories and thermogenic effect of food that matter.

Your video on SIBO helped me get diagnosed with SIBO - I brought it up to my naturopath after noticing that my symptoms matched a lot of yours from your video, and now have an answer to the truly severe gut issues that have been plaguing me for several months. Your videos also helped me realize I never healed from my ED from 6 years ago and now I have finally begun to address the harm from that with a more intuitive eating approach, and it's significantly impacted struggles with depression over my weight. I’ve got a question re: protein for athletes or in general actually: Are the recommendations regardless of sex? There always seems to be one generic recommendation but are protein needs/absorption whatever really just down to weight or is it just another thing that never has been really researched properly if/what differences there are in women vs men?
@goldsnow2802

I'm no expert, but i think it's due to more of how your body stores fat and muscle, to the addition of what hormones you secrete, so maybe you should ask your doctor, but also Abby for her opinions and recommendations.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npOnhK2F36zacWQ.html from like 48 mins in think they do a really good 10min discussion on the latest research around protien. Protien recommendations are actually more like per pound of lean mass. Since women in general have a high body fat % you would need less protiem per pound of body weight.
@kitkat5153
@kitkat5153 2 жыл бұрын
@@goldsnow2802 Thanks, yes, I also thought that there must be some difference due to hormones and difference in fat/muscle ratio but this is something that’s been bugging me for a while now. No fitness channel, magazine, blog ever makes any distinction but doesn’t mention it’s absolutely the same in men and women either. And I wonder why that is.

Im not an expert in this field of research, however I do cancer research- and what I can tell you from this is that there is a huge bias skewed towards the male sex in research. While in kinesiology and dietetics studies its more common to have human subjects (as opposed to cancer we often use mouse models or cell lines), I would pay special attention to the study design and subject composition. With this being said, I do not believe protein needs are solely down to weight. Women have complex hormonal profiles and anatomy, and this alters throughout our child bearing years all the way to menopause. Heck, it even changes month to month! Thus, a lot of researchers use this “variance” as an excuse to not study female subjects, whether it be human or an animal model. So in answer to your question, I think there is so much more research to be done!

The kiwi thing is interesting because while it can help, too much fiber can also make it worse. I used to take people saying that foods high in fiber could reduce bloat as “a lot of fiber = no bloat”. And he didn’t even mention bloating caused by menstruation which is kind of just..what it is. Lol I look pregnant at least a few days once a month since I started getting my period again. I just started to accept it.

Plus you would never get that coordinated to have them all ripe when you need them consistently at 2/day b/c our stores have meh produce all the time. So one of those things that sounds easy but a supplement might be easier depending on where you live. (vent at bad access to produce, not at the idea)

Dr. Fung even did a video breaking down how several studies were flawed. Personal antidote, a relaxed time restricted eating schedule (16:8), helped me stop being hungry all the time, binge eating, and slowly loose some weight.

i miss the times before i knew i was allergic to kiwi. :c Like yeah it made my lips and gums itch and sometimes caused blisters on my tongue and tonsils... but it was delicious and i had wayyy less bubbleguts... also, as someone who has had bariatric surgery, re: protein I was expressly told that I should be getting 60 at the bare minimum and should be shooting for somewhere between 80-120grams which is HARD when you can only eat 1/3-1/2 cup of food at a time

After switching to a diet of STRICTLY whole foods, I havent had any bloating. And am finally "regular" after a lifetime of constipation. Bonus: I've also lost 105lbs! And it wasnt even hard, I dont count calories or restrict, i just cut out all sugar and processed foods. (Occasionally I will have some cheese or whole grain flax crackers/bread, usually gluten free. I looooove the Ryvita brand of cracker breads, especially the muesli ones 😋)

sadly I am allergic to kiwi. I personally have found that peppermint tea helps with my bloating. peppermint also seems to ease indigestion for me, perhaps the menthol has something to do with that.

Hi Abbey, I love your channel, I learn so much. You mentioned in you video here that intentional weight loss is Taboo in certain circles. I don’t understand why this is. Can you offer some insight here? Also, when this idea of intentional weight loss is some how wrong, I feel inadequate and there is something wrong with me because I do want to lose weight. Many people, like myself, don’t feel physical well or comfortable in our larger bodies and to suggest that we need too accept where are weight is at because long term weight loss is impossible, is discouraging and gives a since of hopelessness. Is there not a more encouraging way to look at intentional weight loss if you are an individual who wants to do that?

been following your videos for some time now and really appreciate your scientific and rational approach to nutrition and food. I am really interested in your take on the Asian post-partum (aka yuezi, "sitting the month") ritual, particularly the nutritional aspect. There are a lot of seemingly random diet dos and don'ts - ie: what foods to avoid because it can negatively impact milk production that really has no clear scientific basis, or what kind of foods you have to eat (my parents made me drink a ton of meat broth / soups for a month because of their magical milk-letting properties). On top of that the more orthodox yuezi practitioners force postpartum women to follow a set menu rather than their own body's hunger cues for a whole month, which seems very unnatural and un-intuitive eating to me.

As the working single mom of an infant I can attest to the lack of sleep and the starvation that ensues. Not only did I eat uncontrollably, but I was nauseous and exhausted, and could not bring myself to seek out veggies and lean protein. I was too tired and time crunched to make a nice energy packed lunch. So I was always ordering Chinese or a calzone or fat bombs from Panera. I could not make any headway losing that baby weight. It was very depressing.

Hi Abbey!! I'm not a doctor but work in nephrology! My coworkers always say that if you are eating too much protein (more than the 0.8-1g/kg) you are damaging your kidneys and we get a lot of patients like that. How do I keep myself from damaging my kidneys I'm terrified of dialysis.

Have you or can you do a video about what to do when you have very low appetite. I'm on medication that can cause me to have a reduced appetite, so sometimes I dont feel like eating, I forget, or I'll have to force myself. I'm pretty active and am trying to work out 3 days a week, and really struggle sometimes making sure I'm getting enough to fuel my body. Any tips?
