This amazing team has picked-up its shovels (or tunnel boring machines) and is digging a tunnel through the base of a mountain. This project is on the shortlist for The B1M's Construction Story of the Year 2023 - bit.ly/45mL18c

I mean the Statement "the worlds longest rail tunnel" is correct, but only for a very short time. Because when the basis-brenner-tunnel is complete shortly after, it will be about 6km longer with a length of about 64km (including the innsbruck bypass).

So it's complicated: The Mont Cenis Base Tunnel will be the longest **single** rail tunnel ever constructed, in the world. The Brenner Base Tunnel will become the world's longest underground rail connection when it links up with an existing tunnel (built back in 1994). The new tunnel section at Brenner is 55km, while the new tunnel at Mont Cenis will be 57.5km. When it's fully connected to the older tunnels, Brenner overall will be 64km.

And the UK can neither complete the HST rail line to the north of England, and NEVER completed the rail link connecting Euro Central to south of England, and we still don't have an M-way connecting Scotland to England. Pathetic. And the European projects prove where there is a will there is indeed a way.

I've checked out all three finalists and I vote for this one to win as it is the only one that does anything concerning the reduction of GHG and/or the removal of cars.

The Northwest Outfall team in Arizona found a way to do a common and important class of construction project (sewage) more efficiently and therefore with fewer emissions. That *does* reduce GHGs. We need sewage networks, and we need construction, so finding ways to reduce its emission is a major win. I agree on repainting the Capitol, though. Great that they're redoing the paint job (as they have done every 15 years since it was built), but I don't see how that's one of the three big stories of the year. I wouldn't put it in the top 10 projects I've seen on this channel this year. I also agree that ultimately, the Alps tunnel gets my vote. Just wanted to chime in that there's more than one way to save the planet... reducing emissions from construction is on the same level as reducing emissions from cars. (I would put reducing emissions from power, and the food chain, on the same level.)

I think I would vote for the tunnel build ultimately because I'm fascinated by the engineering involved. However, building a tunnel beneath the Alps will have a less than negligible effect on the climate, as the planet naturally cycles between warm and cool periods, and there is nothing we can do to change that fact. That doesn't mean we should trash the place, but neither should we give so much credibility to the climate crisis hype. It's "Chicken Little" science that must be shown to be the joke that it is.

How come this damned thing has a budget of 3 billion euro, and the Pacheco Pass tunnel, less than half the length, is going to cost 15 billion dollars? I know each geological case is different but God damn.
