0:06 "lets the UK and Denmark share green energy". No, it lets us share energy, whether it's green or otherwise. And I do wish they'd say "X% of the national demand" rather than "Y,000 homes"; _I_ don't know what proportion of the country that represents, and I suspect nor do most viewers.

In theory, the exchange goes both ways - when it's windy in one country but not the other, say, or when the two countries/cultures have peak demands at different times of day. (I've heard the France/England links have always operated in the France to England direction except during testing, but that's mainly because France has plenty of overcapacity as they have so much nuclear [and a tidal barrage]. I would imagine the Britain/Denmark link is more likely to be more even.)

There is a 1Gw connector between the UK and Belgium. 1Gw with Holland, 3 connectors totaling 4Gw with France, 2 with Eire, and a 1.4Gw with Norway. Additional links are nearing completion with Germany, France and Norway. Future links may include Morocco for the solar power down there.

Here in Italy, were just about to start replacing the cables of our first undersea link between Italy, Corsica and Sardinia (SaCoI) which cables were laid down in 1968. Given that newer cables are using far more resistant insulation materials (XLPE) and armoring, and are buried down in a better way, i think it may last at least 50 years. In the meanwhile, the conversion system was replaced one time to increase the power rating of the link, as newer tecnologies allowed it.

Why? When we can just have more offshore ones? This isn't about getting ore power this is about getting the power to where it's needed. Power goes both ways depending on how much is produced and needed. We can't just have massive batteries, so we sell it to countries that need it and we can buy some when we need it too.

It's less about the absolute total, more about moving it around to even out availability and demand. It can be windy in Britain but not in Denmark, or vice versa; also, the demand can be different at different times of day in the two countries, due to differences in culture (and that Denmark is east of us so it both gets dark and gets light there before it does in Britain).

We generally bury the cables using massiblve subsea trenching vehicles. In the 1990s subsea cables were just layed on the sea bed and they rapidly wore away and failed. The threat of sabotage is also a big incentive to bury

@FooBar-ie8pq 0,3 MW/min is not quick in my opinion. Some reactors are this slow. Certainly an eon compared to gas/oil/coal/bio. I would have thought such a slow modulation rate would make them unsuitable for responding to unplanned supply or demand changes, hence the need for fossil fuel backup. It seems that some reactors are much quicker. Are you saying that it is possible to respond to all circumstances using pumped storage, subsea cables and nuclear modulation? Ie no fossil fuel rapid response is required? Please provide a link to substantiate your claim. Thanks.

There are also other countries all connecting together, reducing the need to resort to gas and oil. As for speed, batteries are being added to the grid, they turn on in milliseconds.

"You still need backup for when it's not windy/sunny". Yes, but you need _less_ of it in total across the year. "There's a man in town giving away money. But he's only there some of the time, so I'm not going to take any of it." (Yes, I know about the costs of keeping stations on standby - but even the most inefficient such stations use a _lot_ less coal [or whatever] when on standby than when generating at full capacity.)

@LV-426... I am not familiar with the one to Scotland, but I know Norway has cables to both England and Germany that Norway is obligated to sell electricity by. Because of this the norwegian government have to buy electricity from Sweden to compensate. A significant part of the norwegian population is against such cables with the exception of the political class because it had both negative effects on companies and the economy of households. However it is a big potential to become a source of fortune to the government but a source of frustration to the people because the government can't seem to handle the electricity crisis we have in Norway.

If construction is anything like other skilled industries, business models would have to change. Contracts are getting shorter and shorter, increasing stress and eroding financial security.

As someone who had to fully self-reflect to get out of the darkest low, I can fully and confidently state that seeking the conversation is _crucial._ The important part is finding new perspectives. You can be exceptionally creative in how you pose questions that would be relevant to something you're dealing with, but don't necessarily want to 'give away'. What matters is finding another perspective, something to break the loop of circular thoughts that potentially drags you down. I couldn't have done it without media, personally. Reading stories, watching series and movies, having certain questions in mind and figuring how characters would answer them. I'd consider that an absolute final resort, or something to do in conjunction with having conversations. As for the skeptics regarding the topic: for me, that's like being skeptic about people with a broken leg, or a heart attack. There's really nothing to be skeptical about.

It's like an arcology if future development nearby is either severely limited, halted altogether, or tightly controlled as to create a loosely connected "community" of buildings with minimal natural disturbance. I couldn't quite tell from the video, but that worker using an electric screwdriver, or are they just using muscle power? It seems to me that this would slow the whole process down to a grinding halt! Not to mention exposed workers to repair of stress syndrome... would love to hear an answer….
