Another installment of the underground Sand Bar I'm building in the Sandland tunnels! This episode is a mix of stuff from the summer, including closet expansion, wall / door frame construction, more digging with angle grinders, and random surface updates. Stay tuned for more in the coming months!

The bricks look really cool set into the sandstone, but I don't blame you for not wanting to dig out each brick. Keep up the great vids!

My knowledge is more turn of the century, but as I know it, you use slaked limestone motor for bricks. Which the bath tile stuff looks a lot like

You need digging gear with some sort of long belt or drive shaft to get the power source away from the sand-flinging cutting edge. Keep the sand outta the motor and I bet it would run longer. Just a guess of course. You could go with a bigger cutting wheel that way as well. Slow and torquey would work great in that crumbly sandstone.
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts Жыл бұрын
I've actually seen slow and torquey tried, and it's surprisingly not that effective. The sandstone isn't crumbly enough on its own, but if you make relief cuts with the grinder it's then easy to pop out big chunks. I've considered a long arm with the wheel at the end, I might build some kind of contraption for that when the dumpster grinder finally dies!

Mortar depends on the brick and application. You can usually find mortar at construction supply depots, they usually tons of bricks, mortar, caulk, tools, etc. Edit: Caulk dries quicker I think so you could use that for the brick stuff, for excavation you could drill a grid of holes and chisel that out.

It's some kind of grout junk for bathroom tiles that hardens by drying out. Since the tunnels are almost 100% humidity it took forever to dry. I probably shouldn't have relied on what the hardware store people thought was right, should have found an actual brick mason :-P

Every one of these videos I wonder about boring a hole straight up from the bar to have some ventilation, to reduce the humidity and try to push some of the silica dust and mold spores out so that you can drink and have the dumpster beer be the dangerous part, rather than the air. Thinking it through, if you measured the *absolute* humidity of the surface air and only blew it down (with a solar powered blower) when it was less than something like the equivalent of 70% relative humidity at the tunnel temperature, it would have a drying effect. Possible that I'm overthinking it and the same system would work as on sailboats, where you have a solar powered fan and on average the humidity is going to be lower outside any time it's sunny enough to power the fan.

We want to keep some humidity, the sand gets crumbly if it dries out. We also had a geologist tell us the humidity helps reduce airborne silica dust, so is probably better for breathing long-term!

Ah well, who are you going to believe, a random friend off the internet or an expert who actually knows what they're talking about? :) If there ever was a desire for a dryer room, maybe spraying the walls with sodium silicate would make the surface hold together even as it dried.

@@blintscav Kind of, the cement is more sturdy than the original sandstone. I did some experiments trying to see what would re-solidify sandstone and cement was the best, but doesn't look or behave the same.

You need a wooden door frame, and then use quick-crete to hold it in place, then you'll have a strong enough structure to hang a light door - like a trailer interior door, for example - onto. Be safe. those caverns have no reinforcing frame, I woory about a cave in after you've hollowed them out to such a degree.
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts Жыл бұрын
I've got a video on here somewhere about the structural stability of the tunnels. Since we keep them relatively small with an arched ceiling they're self-supporting. We do have reinforced ceilings in the donut room partially due to a crevice there and partly for aesthetics.
