In case you're wondering what she does with the small "cormlets" I found this info: Dig up each corm and remove the small cormlets from the bottom. Store them over the winter and plant them in the spring. The cormlets will grow into a plant, but won't produce a flower this first year. Dig them up for storage at the end of the season, then replant them again the next year to produce flowers. (so the small ones will not bloom but you'll get them to bloom if you go ahead and plant them too and the next year they will bloom, takes 2 seasons)

Hello everyone, just seeing this video 30 April 2020, Thursday. I live in South Carolina, I have never removed my bulbs😀 over the past two years, and I started noticing that they are multiplying rapidly, I started with one, now I have five! I will be getting new bushes put in very soon and will have to pull up the bulbs!😮 Will doing this after never having moved them harm the bulbs🤔

I wish that you would do a series of videos on gladiolas. I want to know more about succession planting of glads and see some different ideas for displaying in the garden. We are building a 2 foot wide curved bed that is about 12 feet long for the purpose of planting glads to hide a tall electrical box in the corner of our lot. We would like to get them blooming in succession. I have 42 "purple rain mixed" glads and 20 "butterfly mixed" glads to put in the area. I'm listening for ideas if you have any...
@HappyCats17
@HappyCats17 4 жыл бұрын
Just plant them every two weeks or so. You might think about adding some evergreen shrubs as well, since the gladiola foliage will die back in the winter and won't emerge until spring.

If you leave them in the ground, and don't rot, they'll flower again, yes. You can keep them overwinter depending on your gardening zone. I'd dig them up, as it saves money, and is a rewarding process, but you can just see if they come up and/or multiply, or dig and throw them away.

I live in a Zone 5 (( just outside Chicago )), and left mine in the ground over winter -- they came back great, with new ones popping up too. I plan on leaving them in the ground again this winter too -- just putting some mulch over them. They are against the house, to that might provide some protection, but it did get fairly cold last winter (( few nights below 0 )).

Didn't you lift them a bit early? If the frost is marginal, it won't get down to the bulbs and they'll be fine. And they had active green foliage still sucking up the sunshine.
@HappyCats17
@HappyCats17 4 жыл бұрын
She gets strong enough sun over a very long growing season; the bulbs have undoubtedly gotten enough energy. In my experience, also in a warm climate, you can remove the foliage/dig up bulbs as soon as the foliage starts dying back. No need to wait until it's completely died off. May be different in cold climates, though.
