Digging For Vintage Locomotives in Old Boxes at Train Store

One of my friends recently discovered that one of my favorite train stores had acquired several vintage model train collections which had yet to be sorted so we decided to go on a road trip there and check it out.
The boxes did not disappoint, countless pieces of rolling stock and locomotives from the 1950s and 60s. Most of this stuff was in great shape too! I was able to purchase three engines and six pieces of rolling stock

That Princess you found is a great piece of Model Railroading History, it was the first mass produced OO gauge plastic loco for the UK market and quite literally changed the game. Up until that point engines had primarily been diecast and rather expensive so when this hit the scene it stirred up the market. Very quickly Rovex and later Triang began the rise and Hornby Dublo began to fall. The original ones were rather unreliable and crude would receive newer and much better chassises in later releases. 4:05 A BR class 55 "Deltic" made by Bachmann 4:17 A Hornby LMS Coronation Scot/ Duchess Class 5:44 A Bachmann LMS Jubilee 6:05 A Hornby LMS Black 5

My 9 year old son and I are getting stuff together to make an HO layout. I showed him your videos and he's been talking trains non stop. And, I saw an ad on Craigslist for a BUNCH of Model Railroader magazines from the early 80s up to 2000 something, for free. So, we have been going through them and getting ideas for a layout. I just wish there was a place like Larkspur in my area. Keep up the awesome videos buddy.

You really hit a goldmine in all that Hornby stuff. The Scotsman you saw was a NRM exclusive model from the mid 2000s, and one of the A4s was from a limited run known as the Commonwealth Collection. City of Birmingham is technically a Coronation class, Duchess is a nickname for the Coronations. The big set you found also had a Coronation in it. The Coronations were built with streamlining, and eventually had it removed for ease of maintenance. The LMS engine that was numbered 5085 is a Stanier class 5, real iconic engines. THe one called "Cock o' the North" is a Gresley P2, and that model was likely sound-fitted (based on what I know of Hornby releases). I believe the William Shakespear engine was a BR STandard class 7 (That is based on the name, lots of that class were named after historical figures or authors). THe British diesel was, in fact, a Deltic. Likely a Bachmann. That plunger powered Tri-ang loco might as well be a Hornby origin story. Neat find.

I see you've added some European rolling stock and locomotives to your collection, Harrison. The couplers on them are similar to LGB G scale and Märklin Z scale. Someone did a number on that caboose, if you can call it one. It's even smaller than a bobber. Keep on digging through the shop's boxes -- that's where you find the interesting stuff, bud. The Atlas CP engine would be either an Alco S2 or S4 from the Yellow box era. These units are great runners and can be often found used in a lot of places. While they lack some details of the re-released models from the current Atlas line, they make a great budget performer.

The “Hornby” princess with plunger pickups is an incredibly rare piece of kit, I’m lucky enough to own one, they were designed in 1950 by Rovex Plastics Limited, with motors supplied by the Zenith company and made almost entirely from cellulose acetate plastic, with roller pickups behind the rear drivers The 1950 design was incredibly problematic, as the cellulose acetate would warp, causing the chassis to become bent and render the model useless, the roller pickups were also poor and didn’t pick up power properly, as a result, a metal chassis and plunger pickups were introduced in 1951 (the variant I have), however we’re still poor performers due to their small pickup range Triang later acquired Rovex in late 1951/early 1952, and modified the tooling to have metal wheels and wiper pickups on the drivers, with the body remaining relatively the same, the 4-6-2 Pacific chassis created for the Princess model would also be used for their unrebuilt Bulleid Battle of Britain Pacific loco (featuring accurate Bulleid Firth Brown wheels) and their transcontinental “Hiawatha” pacific
