Digging Train Tunnels Through My Underground Bar

Finally, the train layout we've all been waiting for! Or at least the start of it, this is going to take a while before it's a full loop!
I took a bunch of cheap plastic holiday trains and installed them in the walls of my underground sandstone speakeasy, the "Sand Bar".

Wooden sleepers, also known as railroad ties or crossties, are traditionally used to support and secure the rails on the track bed. You need some cute little scale-model wooden steepers to secure into the sand . Also consider misting it with a spray bottle and packing it down

After you get the train track all leveled and the sand smoothed and packed you need to spray the whole of it down with watered down white glue and a little rubbing alcohol. it will lock everything in place and make it a lot easier to clean. Normally you would have to avoid getting it on the rails but since you are not powering the train through the rails it shouldn't be an issue. Also, as someone else suggested you should make a cover for the dump cart and use it as the first container in the vacuum system. Suck the sand right into the cart.

Man that sandstone look so soft! Barely harder than the industrially compressed sand professional sandcastle folks use at competitions. I've always been a little jealous of people with geology like this where they can just build their own caves. Where I live its all some of the hardest gneiss in the world that shrugs off normal blasting techniques.

Looks like it’s coming along great! If wood does ok down there maybe try raising the tracks with 2x4s? Also, has anyone tried tunneling a staircase as deep as they can go? Also also, can that LiDAR scan be converted into a 3D object/stl? Might make an interesting challenge for the printer 🤔

Dehumidifier with bare walls would make it crumble, the sand loses stability if it dries. Some kids have discovered that when they start campfires in the caves in St. Paul. If the smoke doesn't get you, the ceiling does when it dries out.

@@saveitforparts if it is such low density sandstone you need a polymer based shockcrete on chicken wire, that's how they do bunkers in the chalk in the south of england. i'm from yorkshire, we got hard sandstone. if you are serious about using it as a fallout shelter you might want to design a thermally active ventilation system. have a long travel multi stage u bend at the less used end of the bunker for cold air in, activated charcoal filters in the troughs of the vent, then cover over where you channeled from with suitable covering material. stow for a hot stove and vertical, diagonal, vertical design to the surface there.. in the more occupied end, conical stack cover at the surface.. all of which should keep you free from heavy metals. if it's not done right, simply the moisture from your breath will turn it into a not viable nightmare.. it's a nice idea though. i wish i had 'project orientated' friends when i was younger.

This coming summer, I'll be in that general area. I'm pretty good at manual labor, even though I'm getting older. Whenever I see Sandland videos, I think to myself that they could use somebody that's stupid enough to be content hauling buckets of sand to the surface. It didn't take me long to think of somebody who might fit that bill. I'm stupid. I still have some brawn remaining. I could lug buckets of sand! (See how my brain works?!?) If I'm headed into your region AND have time, how can I email you to offer a day or two of my labor? I'm already visiting someone nearby, as is often what happens when I take these trips. My past dozen or so bouts of wanderlust have seen me meeting people I know only from the internet. So far, I've not yet met anyone who plans to crack open my skull to eat the delicious gray matter within. It has been quite successful. No, I don't have a channel to promote. I don't need the attention. I don't need the money. The only useful thing I can give you is lugging buckets of sand.
