Digging A Secret Catacomb (Sandland Tunnels)

We're back at Sandland for some more tunnel digging! And since the actual digging is getting kind of repetitive and boring, we did a bunch of other stuff too! I keep collecting realistic fake skeletons and bones, so we've been building a DIY catacomb! Now I can finally make a stupid reaction thumbnail for one of these videos :-D
Check out Sandland and other hobby tunneling in this article!
www.bloomberg.com/news/featur...
I highly recommend these demolition hammers for sandstone digging and general smashing stuff, they're cheap and actually hold up to underground mining for a few years before they wear out!

(I usually put 100 micron screen over the air intakes to help save the motors from all the sand).

What a vast tunnel system, I had no idea how immense it is; you could get lost if you're not familiar with it. My appreciation, there's a lot of work involved. I find the carbide miner's lamp very nice; just a bit of carbide and water and a spark, and you have light. I think it's a reliable lamp, which can't be said for flashlights; they're anything but reliable. The corner with the human bones is very creepy; I think the idea with the railway is great. Eventually, the carts will automatically transport the sand outside, unload it automatically, and come back automatically. Thanks for showing us around and taking us along.

Woohoo, more Sandland! I wonder how well a headlight restoration kit would work on that respirator. I suppose regular plastic polish might be cheaper, since UV sealant would be rather useless underground. Still, I think it could be saveable within a few hours' work depending on the type of plastic it is. Another janky idea: combining multiple shop vacs to a single pipe to get better suction

Surveyed in hard rock and coal mines. Just out of curiosity how are you keeping track of the physical relationship of one project area to another? Any concerns someone will bust through in to another? What is the ventilation situation? Thanks, and as always great content.
@saveitforparts

One of the volunteers has a survey project that they keep up to date, and another has done some 3D scanning. We have 3 entrances at different elevations that provide some natural ventilation, and a powered fan in one spot. I've done some air measurements and even in the dead-ends there's not much difference in air quality over time.

qustion !!!!!!!!! if sand land tunals are just compressed beach sand could you use a pressure washer to cut out the sand? i looked online and there are reports of people cutting into their sandstone tiles when they leave their pressure washers on high power. this has the added benefit of elimataeing air dust and there for fancy respatory equipment. All you would have to do is wet the area you want to cut using the low power setting to make sure no dust gets in the air, and then use the high setting to cut the sandstone. problems you would encounter from here is getting power and water
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 3 ай бұрын
Yep, high-pressure water jets are actually how a lot of local sewer tunnels were constructed. But we don't have a reliable water supply, and we'd still have to separate and transport the sand (plus it would make a mess in the tunnels!)

Curious if you've done any tests for radon gas down there and what fire / safety measures you have in place. My home town of Nottingham has a bunch of sandstone caves that have been used for various things over hundreds of years. The oldest inn in England the Trip to Jersalem is partially in the sand stone caves under Nottingham Castle. There's a cave museum / tour thing you can go on that tells you about the history and takes you through smugglers caves under the pub and there's a tiny hole in the roof to the pub upstairs where people would drop rocks down to warn smugglers below that the pub was being raided by the authorities., There's even a tannery down there.
@saveitforparts

Hah, My dad did some work at a granite quarry, and was told he could have all the granite he wanted for free. had just bought his first house and needed to build a retaining wall.
