I think the pipe could have been put lower in the ground by a few inches. Hopefully also put some stone in the ditch so it doesn't wash dirt into the pipe. Other wise i think you've done a greeat job getting rid of the sub surface water more then likely coming from that hill

Well that road isn't going anywhere, brilliant job Todd. As for digger size it's horses for courses really, I reckon if you needed a bigger digger for a much bigger job you could always hire one.

Shaping up nice. I personally get tired of watching some other channels cause it's week after week clearing and digging unlike with your channel. You do medium size jobs and it's not the samething over and over it's like a variety pack kinda watching your channel in a nice way. Keep up the nice work and videos.

Biggest machine I’ve run is a 349 trackhoe and it’s great throwing 4 yards of dirt at a time but I love the little stuff Bc ya can’t beat being able to get in tight places

Doing an awesome job man, we used the “french drain, drilled pipe” deal at my land in a soggy place about 40’ long. Dug a trough thru it about 6’ deep and found 3 different springs about 10’ apart. Let it drain for a few weeks and everything tightened up solid, went back with 12” of big gravel, 24” double wall pipe with 300+ holes topped it with big gravel and fabric then another 4’ of dirt to level it up. Track over it all the time with my 36k lb track loader and never leaves a mark much less sinks any

You impressed me with how you fixed this problem, looks like it is working great. I laugh at some of the comments telling you what they would do differently,people don't understand how the real world works, rock cost money, most people don't have unlimited funds, telling you that you should have put rock in the ditch 😂. You did great

It’s coming along! Definitely one of the more involved road builds I’ve seen you do. You explained that you put rock, fabric, then dirt, but I think I saw shortly after that you had put no fabric between the rock and dirt at about 12:20 . Is there any particular reason or was it just a small area that didn’t really require any?

Why don't you cover the rock with ground cloth so when you cover it UP with dirt , the dirt won't compact INTO the rock and Plug the holes you drilled into the drain pipe ???

I'm waiting for a follow up video 2-3 years from now on this after it's all put in and we have Biblical rainfall events, like you have done for other projects. Looking at your design my hillbilly guess is it will work. But you don't really know until you go back and check it out. Ask me how I know!

Are you concerned about all that stone under the fabric getting plugged up with muck over time and loosing its ability to shuttle the water to the pipe? Most French drains wrap the stone with filter fabric for that reason. I have replaced several French drains that were installed with perforated pipe and stone that wasn’t wrapped and eventually plugged up and stopped moving water. Thoughts?

Hey, wondering a few things. Do you have a quick attach on your excavator? sure like having the ability to quickly change buckets. Trench bucket, digging bucket and clean up bucket. Clean up bucket sure makes loading a lot nicer. I like how you setup the various grades of gravel to drain that seep, and added holes to the pipe. Looks like it s working a treat so far. Happy days! You should’ve laid the fabric directly on top of the clay, and used 3/4” clean stone on top of the fabric, that allows for better drainage. That clay you’re using is going to retain water which will sit on top of the road surface.

I’m curious how you plan on keeping the hill from eroding onto the road you built over time, and how the speed of the water coming off the hill won’t wash out the road over time. Would love to understand the engineering that will keep the hill from washing down

Given the type of soil (clay) in that area it erodes very slowly. It will wash down the edges and eventually to lower areas downstream

@@DigginLife21 I just wanted to ask as I have done a few boat launch roads that had to go through hills and was high on both sides of the road ( 3:1 slopes ) and I will admit, despite putting in ditches and running french drains in the hills themselves, we still had issues with wash out due to the shear volume of water coming down those hills when we would get a few solid days of rain. It didn’t help that the roads themselves had a 80 foot drop from the top of the roads to the bottom. I love your content and often reference your jobs to see what I could be doing differently on my sites. Thank you again for your reply Todd!

@@DigginLife21 that particular job was done two years ago - I only referenced it due to the complications I ran into doing it and then trying to maintain it since. I didn’t have the best equipment on that job either, had to dig through the hills ( roughly 500 triaxle loads hauled out ) with a wheel skidsteer and a 60 hp John Deere tractor. If I recall correctly, it took me about 4 months of 6 day/week work weeks to do the job. Lol. Definitely tested the limits of what wheeled machines could accomplish. Regardless, your video series of doing that long driveway always reminds me of that job and it’s the reason I first commented about the erosion and water control on your side slopes. It was in no way any knock on the job you did ( which was awesome ), it was just to first, actually contact you - something that’s been on my list for quite some time, and more importantly, to ask you how you engineered your side slopes and ditches to accommodate the flow of water ( which I am grateful for your reply ). I’m a sole proprietor myself and have to find the work, estimate, bid and perform the work myself ( admittedly I often hire a trusted friend to help me meet deadlines on larger jobs or sub out certain aspects of some jobs ). I apologize for rambling on, I just wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put in helping other small contractors like myself, and you definitely give me something to aspire to. One day I plan on owning a new piece of equipment. I hope your old excavator finds a good home and is still owning it’s keep years from now. Best regards from Ottawa Ontario Canada 🇨🇦!
