These plugs have been the best smart item I’ve ever bought. Buy it, flash it , forget about it and it just keeps working

They are still my favorites for sure! Screws, pin headers, etc. I did finally have to replace one from 2018 that has been kicking away on my gas dryer. I figure I got my money out of the usage.

Travis, Great video of flashing one of the most versatile "go to" smart plugs. This update video provides a refreshed/updated step by step instructions for those getting into Home Assistant, as well as a refresher with tips/tricks for those that have previously done it. Thanks!

I bought the two S31s for spares as I had one from 2018 go out but then I thought, hey let's do it again and add ESPHome too. The S31 never gets old!

Thank you! Just started with home assistant, bought 4 of the S31…held some breakout wires to flash first one (pretty tedious), have the clips and usb power switch coming today. Took me 3 times to realize SSID is case sensitive. Have it flashed (used ESPHome via command line on Mac) and watching my smoker right now via the app. So frickin cool!

I have been using two of these for quite a while now. One plugged into the small window unit in the shed. The other powering the 3dprinter. I haven't bit the bullet on installing and configuring HA yet. They are both running tasmota though. Should have bought more on Prime day.

Thanks Travis, I just ordered everything I need for this from your links above. Something I would love to see you do is to flash Lillygo's T-Display-S3 Touch Edition with Tasmota. It's a esp32 with a touchscreen about the size of a decora switch. It would be cool to have a couple of buttons on the screen and display data like temp in that room from a different esp32. I have found some info about this but have not been able to get it to work.

I have one model that has a small screen on it, luckily those with the USB ports they are meant to be flashed so a lot of times you can just attach the cable and go. Some make you hold down the boot button while applying power but that's usually about it. Easy peasy there.

Thank you for this. Worth mentioning is that Sonoff also has a S31 Lite - with no power monitoring, and the holes on the little board are blocked... those are the ones I just ordered and received... not knowing this. Ah well, they're going back.
@digiblurDIY

The lite is the same board just missing the power monitoring as you said. There are no holes. Just pads on both models.

New to HA, looking to flash a sonoff r2, and I have followed a lot of your tutorials but you threw me a curve at 25:05 when you jump over to the configra?.. where did you go?, it appeared to be another url location but you lost me. Sorry if I was missing something 😵‍💫 Just figured it out. (my mama never accused me of being real smart:)

Timely, considering I'm new to HA and recently flashed 4 Emporia Vue 2 power monitors with ESPhome with help from your video on that subject. I've been looking at the S31 plugs for ESPhome integration. Though Tasmota looks interesting, I'm already into ESPhome now (I get that I could do both). I already have a few Zigbee plugs and end devices, so wonder about the relative reliability of the two approaches... I have a well house with a metal skin that Zigbee seems to have a hard time penetrating. Any thoughts appreciated!
@RossReedstrom
@RossReedstrom 7 ай бұрын
Metal shells on buildings are really hard for RF. Getting an antenna through the wall would help immensely. I wonder if those cheap truck stop "improve cell signal in your car" passive antenna pairs would work for Wi-Fi frequencies (which includes zigbee)
@Scaliad
@Scaliad 7 ай бұрын
@@RossReedstrom A Zigbee plug 'router' with an external attenna would probably do the trick if I could find one. Where do you stand on Zigbee vs. ESPhome or Tasmota? The mesh aspect of Zigbee is appealing, but then again, that is what HA does through integrations and across a wider range of products...
@digiblurDIY
@digiblurDIY 7 ай бұрын
Since this is WiFi it could be fixed with access points in your home around, which also is an added benefit to other WiFi devices you have such as phones, computers, etc.
@Scaliad

@digiblurDIY So, a better solution to getting signal inside that well house than Zigbee? It's worth a try, and I get to flash somemore ESP devices...

I must be missing something. I hooked the S31 to the USB TTL vcc-3v3 gnd-gnd tx-rx rx-tx. I power theCP2102 on while holding the button on the S31 for a few seconds. I go Tasmota Install click on install and choose the CP2102 USB port, Then device dashboard pops-up and I choose install Tasmota then choose to erase the device then install. After that a install failed window pops-up with this massage. "Failed to initialize. Try resetting your device or holding the BOOT button while clicking INSTALL." I tried the restarting and the button, checking the wires angai and again and I still get the same message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@digiblurDIY
@digiblurDIY 7 ай бұрын
that's pretty much the gist of things. Check your connections and make sure all is good. Might be a bad wire too as I've seen that. Make sure you are using the correct RX and TX on the plug.

i have not used esphome yet.... and if both are available for all devices i think i'd stick with tasmota just because.... i'm familiar, it seems easier, and it leaves me with a single integration in HA vs 2. once thing i question on that and maybe you, or someone else can or cannot answer... is that plug rated for 15A? i know you avoid the sonoff basic because of it's 10A limitation vs the shelly having 15 but does that plug do 15A? most of what you'd probably use it at wouldn't even hit that limit but just a curious question.
@digiblurDIY
@digiblurDIY 7 ай бұрын
I haven't had issues with using these at 10A or so but I still like to give myself headroom on things but these are rated for 15A and not 10A.

as much possible, ill avoid any IoT devices that still uses esp8266, that thing can be easily kicked out to the wireless by somebody and put it in AP mode. yep, deauth attacks on esp8266 is very easy thing to do, of course any esp chips that is esp32 or later are not vulnerable on this since it support 802.11w-2009 management frames.
