If you're at an art school I doubt it. Not to diss Ethan, he's great artist who knows his stuff. But if you have an art teacher at an art school they'll probably teach you the same stuff but in a different way. And what Ethan's teaching is something that is usually taught by a drawing teacher.

Honestly, his "meanness" is so motivating to me. It's funny and it shows that he cares about the people he is trying to help by pushing them to do better. And if artists out there think he is being "too harsh" I can tell you, once you get into a real working environment there are people who will actually chew you up and spit you out. People who will actively tear you and your work apart and bring you down for no reason other than to see you fail. Ethan is most certainly not one of those people.

@@c1nnamodoll Hm... as long as you have the first and last letter right it the order of the other letters doesn't really matter. Humans interpret written language in a wierd way. The only typo I would have catched (without you pointing them out) was the first one. Also - I catch myself all the time typing so fast, that spacing and letter order get messed up. I would call this the typing aquivalent of a slight stutter. And dyslexia says exactly nothing about your intelligence. Some of the most creative, imaginative and overall nice people I've met have it. One of the most creative stories I've read was written in a pure phonetic fashion. So - don't worry. This man is legitimately the best teacher I have ever seen. All the other art channels are like, "all you have to do to improve your art is do your own thing," and stuff like that, without clarifying what you should do to do your own thing. Ethan is like, "BEFORE YOU DO YOUR OWN THING, you must know this," and at the beginning, you're like jeez this guy is harsh, but as you keep watching his vids and improving, you realise all he is saying is the truth. And since the truth can hurt, all the other channels baby you. And since those channels care more about how you feel than your improvement, they fail at teaching you what you need to know, but not Ethan. He knows that what you need to improve is the truth, even if it is harsh. That's what a good teacher does. They tell you truth, even if it's not what you want to hear, because that's how you will improve. Knowing what you did wrong is what you need to improve, because if you don't know what you did wrong, you will never fix it.

I learned this fairly recently and was lucky enough to already know before being told, it's ALWAYS function over form, because w/out function, you don't have the correct form. You cannot do *_anything_* without the basics, like anatomy. If you don't know how a human works in the first place, you won't be able to draw one. The fundamentals are the most important thing. It's the cake or the pillar, and then you can build on top of that with your style and slight modifications, like the icing or the roof.

Hey man, love your enthusiasm and love the character. I've been drawing my entire career, 28 now and growig slowly grumpy about the art industry but I have to say, your style is refreshing, clever and actually helpful. There is SO much shit on YT that is pretending to be helpful while teaching nothing on drawing and making people only more stuck. You talk about the absolutely most important stuff and thank you for it. If any young artist is reading this comment, take it from an older goat. This guy is right. About the form, the shapes, the line clarity, all of it. And if your style makes sth looks like a mistake, its not doing you good. Don't make excuses for yourself. But also stay possitive. We are here to make a million mistakes. As a wise man once said, if you are not making mistakes you are not working on hard enough problems. So try smiling every time you make sth and you think its bad. It means your eyes learned sth. Great stuff, brother!!

One of the best art teachers I ever had was in FIRST grade when I was 5 or 6, and I STILL remember that important lesson. He walked up and said in a big friendly voice, "Oh, you have 'peanutitis.' That's when all your characters are the size of peanuts!" My characters were, altogether, the size of my finger on the sheet. He wanted me to use much more of the page, of course. And that lesson is always on my mind. Incredible impact on a life, for so few words. For some reason, men seemed to be the best and worst teachers in my life, either putting total effort into it, or just not really caring at all. In college, I took both art and computer science classes. I had a great teacher that really helped me. But at the end of the semester, she asked me what artist I liked or inspired me, and I told her the truth. "Frank Frazetta." She looked and sounded like I had said "Adolf Hitler." But I took it that my inspirations were utterly invalid. Again, never forgot that, and coincidentally, never took another art class. Little things have enormous, very-long-lasting impacts. It took years to even see how her words shut me down.

So, recently I bought an Apple Pencil so I could finally get a taste of drawing with pressure sensitivity on my iPad tablet. I absolutely loved the dynamic lines I could create depending on the weight I applied onto the pen. There was one issue though, my software (Ibispaint Paint for some stupid reason) couldn't work with pressure opacity which was really frustrating for me since I tend to make pretty rough sketches- But now I realized this is actually a good thing and I can use this to my advantage in terms of improving my art, thanks so much for this video! Love this. By focusing on the intention behind a choice you are encouraging your fans to think about "why" they are making an aesthetic decision. Intention gives the artist of any medium power.

15:45 Thanks for including my submission, it was pretty hard to do because I'm more used to my usual messy/painting style, so my shadows are all over the place and I later on start blending it all in to make the final thing, but I'm also aiming for animation besides painting, so these exercises about the brush strokes being confident and the simplified and clear shadows are going to help a lot. Keep it up man this was a really cool video!

I'm rekindling my drawing practice. I had been irritated as to why my art wasnt matching my intention. I've only viewed a few of your videos, but I am wowed at how much just makes plain sense. Kinda like seeing a therapist after a bout of depression, having an outside source to explain why things arent working helps me analyze what I already knew to be an issue, yet didnt have the blueprint for making changes. Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)

I accidentally stumbled at your video during my random browsing, and oh boy I wish I could have the same courage as you in pointing the mistakes. Tough love yes, but sometimes this is necessary for us to moves forward to become something better. Thank you for the videos and keep up the good work :)
