Digital Camo with no airbrush - Building ICMs Mig-29 "Ghost of Kyiv"

Do you think digital camo is impossible without an airbrush? Think again! Today I build the 1/72nd scale Mig 29 "Ghost of Kyiv" from ICM to prove that point. Make sure to Subscribe as well since I'll be further testing ICM's paints in the full review of the 1/48th ICM Beaufort kit in an upcoming video.

I got this kit shortly after release. You had better luck with seams than I did.. Not only did the intakes need putty, but also the wings to fuselage, and the vertical stabilizers to fusilage. Your comments on the decals were spot on. Not terrible for an old kit, but more work than I was expecting. Looks fine from a few feet away. A shelf, not a contest kit.

Thanks! I try to give an honest opinion of all the kits I look at - Airfix have turned around what they are doing in the last decade tremendously, but we also have a lot of other manufacturers producing very high quality kits too - lucky us!

@@MannsModelMoments Yes, every kit maker, has to step up their game, and that's good for us in the end :) I still favor Tamiya, because of their quality and good/clear instructions

Nice review and build! 👍 I built this kit a few months ago and used the closest Vallejo paints that I had....came out looking lovely! Then onto the rather intimidating looking decals (transfers as I still call them after all these years - hey, they were always always 'transfers' on the old 60s and 70s Airfix kits where I first encountered them!! 😆) I found -as you did- that they went down beautifully; just keep a brush full of water handy to help positioning! That large centre transfer tore slightly as I was positioning it, but I got it closed up well enough; they look more frightening than they really are, and really settle very nicely with just water to start, and then the usual Micro Sol to bed it down further! 😉 The plastic parts were as you found; a few gaps in places, and not as refined as the more modern kits are.... hard to think we're critiquing a kit from the early 2000s like that!! Easy to do for pre-2000s kits, unless you were there in the 60s and 70s fighting very basic pieces into submission...!!! 😂 But yeah, the plastic parts on this are a bit 'crude' at times, but overall, it builds into a lovely little model....I added a pilot figure into mine, and stand-mounted it - aircraft don't look 'right' unless they're off the ground - to me!! 😝 Great build of a nice kit.... 👍

I have made this kit and can confirm that the moulding isn't fantastic, but I will forgive ICM for that. The decals are a real challenge and my swear box will confirm that, but if you are patient it produces a stunning looking model.

Couple of questions on the build - I take it you used the enclosed varnish on the model before applying the camo? Is there any reason why you didn't utilise any decal solutions?

I always use Pledge (aka Future aka Klear) as both a pre-decal gloss coat and a decal setting/softening solution

After I’ve had some more EXP points I think I might pick this kit up. I haven’t built any mig-29s and I think this Ukrainian one would look really nice in my shelf. Also once you get the chance, can you review italeri’s new-ish F-16C/D starter set and compare it to Airfix’ F-16A? Considering they’re both starter sets for about the same price.

@@MannsModelMoments thank you! When I first saw the italeri starter sets the other day I was quite shocked to see that they had Vallejo paints, which in my experience are generally better than the humbrol ones. Hopefully they don’t come dried up.

@@goingbork1522 Hmmm, it seems the Italeri F-16 model set isn't available, and general availability in the UK of these sets seems low...I'll investigate and see what I can find!

Ah yes. The invisible aircraft with the make-believe pilot. The best stealth aircraft in the world. Wikipedia has this infamous fighter pilot listed as "the greatest air combat ace in history from 1945 to the present".
