This was a very interesting video! As someone with their own animated pilot, I can relate to a lot of what has been said. I worked on my pilot alone with a low budget and I've seen some people compare me to the big shows (TADC etc). Obviously my work can not be that high quality. Luckily, most people are very understanding and encouraging. I enjoyed making my pilot so much and I think if you have a fun idea and are enjoying it too, that's all that matters!

It's somewhat refreshing to see an indie production, where the creator is working on it because they are passionate about their cool idea, as opposed to one produced by a megacorporation because they want the money. It's awesome to think that the indies might get more of the spotlight in the future.

I'm an aspiring TV Show Writer in college, and I really appreciate this message. Don't expect newcomers or independent productions to be perfect. There are so many amazing labors of love that are just effected by important factors, like budget or scheduling. And the people who create them are not perfect either, because we're human beings who can't make everything perfect, even as labors of love.

Finally the video is out! I'm so excited! Indie animation is legit my favorite thing to talk about. The fact that TADC has THAT many views (which is deserved) makes me smile so bad but, I'm not blind enough to see how worried it can be if the series pilot is just a one off thing and people forget about the hardwork involved. As for other pilots I highly recommend people look into the pilots that GLITCH prompted in their streams as they seem like our new upcoming pilots I believe should have a spot beside Helluva Boss, Murder Drones, and Lackadaisy. I'm also someone who's into promoting smaller less known pilots and while I don't know any now this video is a good motivation for mento start now. Very good video

My two favorite indie animated series are Fairy Foxes by StickFreeks, and TOME by Chris Niosi! Fairy Foxes is about six magical foxes who live in the clouds and must use the mysterious Akira Amulet to win a war against evil hawks who want to destroy humanity! TOME: Terrain Of Magical Expertise is about a group of friends in a realistic VR game, investigating the recent uprise in hackers and uncovering the mystery of a strange power that infected the main character out of nowhere! I recommend checking both out! Fairy Foxes has a small community and has been going on since 2008, and we're currently awaiting episode 15! TOME began in 2014 and ended in 2015 [this may be inaccurate] and had an RPG game produced in 2020!! The creator, Chris Niosi, is also a voice actor that works in anime dubbing! He voiced Reigen Arataka in the English version of Mob Psycho 100!! :D I also have my own indie animated series that I'm working on; it has three episodes out already and the fourth one is in production! Awesome video as always, Fionapollo!

Wow, another person who likes TOME. It's especially really cool to see how Kirbopher has changed in terms of his animation work from 2011(when TOME started) to 2015(when the TOME series ended). It's also really cool to see how TOME compares to TvTome Adventures, which is the older sprite-based Flash animated series it is a remake of.

I want more people to appreciate the concept of watching fewer episodes in a single sitting. It's great to spend time pondering each episode and letting everything sink in rather than get your answers straight away that you forget the smaller details like foreshadowing or themes just by binging. Disney Plus shows may be all over the place, but they're doing the right thing in releasing one episode a week, letting each episode sink in.

Just wanted to pop in before finishing the intro to say something real quick: My dream currently is to have my own indie cartoon series (at least a test pilot or pitch reel or something) that is publish-ready so I can get the ball rolling for me personally (it’s hard for me to start something (mostly due to too many ideas) but I find my groove pretty quick once I finally begin!) However, I’m also kinda nervous about just how much attention my projects may get. It’s both great, but it can backfire very quickly! I don’t want to have a fandom or fanbase that gets too big and too toxic for me to handle! And I know I can only do so much, and I have to pick my battles! But I’m just both excited and nervous about the whole thing, especially since the internet would technically be my boss in this case…

I can imagine how much this topic speaks to you. Your indie project Mint & Friends is quite promising and this whole trend feels like reassuring that also your time has come. Of course, it's still not easy to put forward this kind of project, and you know best how much passion, time and effort it still takes. But at least these good news bring the necessary impulse to carry on in hopes that even your project might someday work out. As for myself, I'll stay around and patiently wait for new sketches and hopefully the first full episodes of Mint & Friends to come out!

It's nice seeing indie animation get more recognition, especially as someone working towards making pilot (not any time soon cause there's a lot I need to work on, but I'm doing a lot of prep with scriptwriting and character designs for a comic, then once it's up and running I plan to animate a short anime-opening styled video as an animation test and to promote the comic and then hope grow enough support from the comic to be able to pay a few friends to help me animate a pilot). But it is scary seeing how high the standard is becoming for the viewers. I really hope more indie protects continue to kick off and showcase their cool original stories and that fandoms and communities change for the better (as in the toxic patterns that reoccur in each project that gains large recognition).

I just got to finish this video and gosh dangit I wish everyone working in or are just fans of indie animation should watch this video, KZfaq is such a new thing let alone indie animation so it has such of variety work-wise. When I was making Howling Hoods, it was originally just meant to be a rough webcomic while I worked on something else however after some personal issues I ended up kind of jumping the gun and turning the comic into a pilot, and honestly, I wish I had the knowledge I had now when it comes to animation mainly because it's such a different medium, I have a more professional production now and I am improving with each update but I wish people knew it's a big thing to work on. Anyway great video

I think indie animation is great. I haven't seen many beyond Hellava Boss, TADC, Lackadaisy and Murder Drones but i really do enjoy both the different styles of animation and the humour & plots In the case of Hellava and Murder, its also interesting seeing where the studios have taken the show after the pilot, seeing how deep each show gets with the story and characters. Watching the pilots, I never got the impression that it would go that way Also, Deepcut has started an indie show too. Garnet Heart, I believe

@@sethisevilone02Thank you for proving my point. Reactionaries hated it from Day 1, judging it for being "woke" as some all-defeating quality. I’ve seen many indie projects. This from slideshow story time, animatics, and animation. All of which has displayed a cornucopia of creativity and thoughtful application of the talents they have. It’s always wonderful to see peoples creativity on full display, regardless of the scale they are able to employ. It can be difficult to keep my own expectations in check but knowing that is half the battle. What I care most about as far as expectations go, is that people don’t burn themselves out. Any project I find any amount of joy or even just catches my interest leaves me immediately grateful for the work they did to make it happen. To the specific extent that I’d hate to see them overwork themselves in a fervor to meet expectations they aren’t obligated to reach in the first place. A lot of this attitude comes from a general care for my fellow inhabitants of the coil, however I wouldn’t be totally honest if I didn’t mention the greedy streak that also wants them to take breaks. I’ve found in the years I’ve lived that as kind as a person is we all have bad days. In our worst we can let our kind hearts slip, however greed is a bit more persistent. Using logic to make your greed want the same thing as your kind heart goes a long way to keep a lot of expectations in check. It’s not always the valiant honorable figure I want to be but it’s usually pushing me to be good if not always for good reasons. All this to say, if you like something someone made you can at least try to be kind to them. If for no other reason than to keep their morale up. It’s fine just never resort to cruelty. It’s easy to cast judgment in the world but quite difficult to create. The least we can all do is try to be understanding. That all on display, I wish you all a pleasant day. Sincerely -The Void

My friend and I are working on our own indie animated series as well that I joined in on because this was my friend's show idea that I REALLY WANT TO BE A PART OF!!! Plus, we both have so many ideas of what to do. We just need to find a way to structure it right. Of course, budget, crew and cast are the main obstacles to hurdle, but we always have a passion for this and to make a good first impression on the pilot and that's what matters most to us as a creative duo.

Wonderful video and quite insightful too. Personally, im hopefully that indie animation can be a new Avenue for people who didn't have a choice before. That being said, i do have my concerns. Talking into account on whats going on the tadc and past with RWBY. I hope people (the veiwers) realize their mistakes and give the artist some breathing room. For any artist, i recommend look at the history of rwby and see how community got with it is today. Each artist have their own style, level of funding, team size and dedication that lumping everyone into the same boat is just not fair. Eveyone have their stories to share, so let them show it you how they wanted. For all the indie artists and those who worry that the bar is set too high. Don't worry, the bar will be different for everyone, how do i know this? Because KZfaq have seen this happen before, a subsection of indie animation that most people tend to overlooked, Minecraft. Aphmau through the years set the bar for her stories being told in that media butit wasnt push as harsh onto other creators and artists like xylophoney and rainimator. Just go out there and let world see your art.

My partner and I are making a fantasy comedy series here on KZfaq! We're just two people but we're massively passionate and have decided to take a real stab at it since we got laid off back in October. We're able to get out a 1-3 minute episode per week, which is faster than we've ever done, but we still catch ourselves wondering: is it enough for growing an audience on KZfaq? KZfaq tends to favor creators who post more frequently and longer videos. Luckily, we had a few meme shorts go viral earlier this year, so we know what KZfaq is capable of and we're determined to use that experience/knowledge to help our original series succeed. It's also exciting to see indie animation blowing up here on the platform, and it definitely gives us even more hope and validation that we're on the right path. I would love to see more indie animation of all budgets succeed!! Maybe it's just me, but I think there's something special about imperfect animation and/or animations made from smaller teams or even just one individual.

(making this comment while listening to this video) i love glitch when MD (murder drones) and Digital Circus (including metta runner and sunset paradise) the thing that i'm scared and worried about the TADC is the dramas that have been happening, the Micheal kovach controversy, the Sean chiplock drama and the gooseworx drama, for the sean chiplock drama (the Va of kinger) i gotten mad because people have been digging up his past from 2010 which is f-ed up cause it was in the past and i'm scared and worried for sean, the drama with goose is really darn dumby dumb cause again her old art isn't really a harmful thing to me cause i have seen more f-ed up things so it does really piss me off, Micheal kovach's controversy drama (i do still love Micheal no matter what) but the thing is when i didn't realize a person euthanized micheals voice and the VA of Caine (with two ai's that sound like both of them which is really not right cause that IS called using someone's voice technically, i think if i'm not wrong) and those drama's.....are making me really nervous and sad how people dig things up to ruin someones life, me referring to Sean when he gotten harassed by a i think it was 16 year girl and sent his fans after them (i think it was still the 16 year old's slight fault for making him do that, his old tweets as well is just a angst thing, unless i'm being dumb here :p) them getting harassed is really NOT good (especially the getting doxxed part) i do think people need to understand to not make drama happen cause it'll only make things worse and i really want those drama's to stop, keep TADC to a calm manner and not make the fandom to be more toxic to the point i do not want to hear anymore problematic, chaotic and toxicity of how fandoms can be

I'm working on a comic thing mostly for practice purposes, I don't know how I feel about having such a "student" quality piece of art out there but hey, I've been told to just do the thing and I've seen some webcomics that are... interesting... to put it nicely so I think my mostly proper grammar and little experience with writing can shine in place of my sketchy art with no color, drawing a few panels a day is very tiring specially when I'm not sure how a scene will look and I have to sort of go with the flow, I'm using the illusion of perspective without doing any measuring and most of these scenes are inconsistent since getting the feel for a 3 dimensional area without actually having it in front of me is kind of hard so I've given up on that and just want to have a background as opposed to empty space, I do use very big panels mainly because I've had problems with reading the text in the webtoon format and I want to try and fit as much text and make it as big as possible the thing I'm doing is called Dragonblood, still don't know how long I want the chapters to be but I do have some idea on the process, I can't imagine doing all those panels in a few days to appease the algorithm so I expect the thing to be buried on arrival which is good for me because this is all an excuse to practice and learn.

Great video! I just seen a smaller upcoming indie series called Swift Spark and the Defense Five (the main character is actually voiced by Vincent Martella voice of Phineas from Phineas and Ferb) getting some unfortunate comments like it isn’t as professional looking like stuff like Lackadaisy, etc. Mind you there’s only one person working on it and it looks amazing, show it some love if you can! It worries me that people will keep being ignorant and mean towards smaller creators 🙃 I’m actually a voice actor who have been very much in love with indie animation for a while now and I’m actually apart of Defenders of Alodia VA cast so thank you for showing some to so many cool series! All these indie series and projects NEED to be given chances no matter how “small”!

Found this to be some great commentary. I don't think it really matters about how much backing some of these indie projects have, there have been some really good projects (The Big Lez Show) that imo easily best these really beautifully animated projects that have indie studios, and hundreds of people working on it-- just because the writing is so good, and you can see the love from people like Jared.

Yeah, Indie coming up in the world is amazing, all we can do is hope and remind people that theres a difference between a corporate funded animation studio and folks coming together to do it on their own. And even then, remember that amoung the indies theres a difference between hobbiests, indie with a full team and indie studios with like 4 to 9 friends.

I'm a bit scared in regards to indie animation, because my dream is to technically have an animated project myself. I say technically because I don't have a team at all, and fully animating what I envision by myself is impossible for a person like me. As a compromize I want to do something in a sort of picture book style with an animated sequence either once per episode or once per chapter. What I am most scared of is the reception of my project. My story at first largely involves meeting and getting to know more people, and getting them to join a group of knights. I don't want to show the main cast all at once because of that. I find it fun to speculate what kind of person someone might be. So a pilot where everyone is interacting isn't really something I would go for. My current plan is that I have 5 chapters, each introducing one or two characters of the main cast, all devided into pretty short episodes. I really hope I can release episodes with larger, but consistant gaps, since I really like having a bit of time between episodes since it gives you something to look forward to, but also to take in what you just watched, and knowing when it will continue. Since the chapters are pretty closed at the end, I also have more time inbetween the chapters to prepare for the next one. I am pretty scared that because of the style, or the release scedule, my work will let down, in my current case, a too high standard to reach, and that everyone will be unrationally angry at it. I'm also scared that people could get weirdly angry or hate everything in my series because I have some queer themes in it. And often, when your writing is just pretty mid, people are a lot harsher. Personally I hope my work gets a small but kind following that really enjoys it, but I really just hope I can get at least the first chapter out without much trouble.

I’m very happy indie animation is getting more attention. But at the same time it has me feeling weird. It just feels like people are turning away from anything from mainstream animation completely. I’m not trying to bat for the big studios, but there are plenty of shows from big studios, past and present, that I really like: such as The Ghost and Molly McGee, Amphibia, Transformers Prime, Danny Phantom, Ed, Edd n Eddy. I could go on. And while there are plenty of mainstream shows that I don’t like, I still want to look at what they might make next, in addition to watching some great indie works. But it feels weird with all of this “abandon mainstream” sentiment going around.

Yey its because dumb people on the internet do not want to just let cartoon and indie cartoons co exist and heck mabey I'm the only one that has a feeling that indie do have its downsize and some few cracks have there own flaws that can be improved but nope internet people spend most of the time putting indie on this petalstol that I don't they can even reach if this keeps going on like in a few years everything on the indie will fall apart if they keep increasing the expectations and once everything breaks than they will have no one ealse to blame but themselves on the internet and mabey the internet probly will not listin and heck the example already is happing with hellva boss a show that had great potential but in s2 everything was messd up and now the internet hates Viv and even with hazbin relise people on the internet doesn't know to actually give good feedback and and will stop bashing and even if it was also part Viv fault for being a pussy on vaild critism and her reputation has already been in the trash and if stuff like this keeps happening to different indie projects than in a few years they will start to question aboyt indie as a whole in animation and heck even indie vidoe games had a zero problem with it despite people even in the comments nagging about aaa gaming nonsense and even hasn' good ones like spiderman and even nintendo games for that matter atleast it's more more stable compared to what's happing with indie cartoon right now and right now it seems good that indie doing good but what will happend if the internet keeps up with the expectations and not meeting those expectations start to bash and attack people on Twitter tiktok and other platforms

And we'll once the bubble pops than people will start to get more and more scared of creating there own indie cartoons and well have less and less and less indie cartoons thanks to people on the internet being the worst that's my own worst case scenario in a few years and where already on this road with doxxing popular equal bad bull crap and also the Viv drama nonsense so more and more would just decide that making an indie cartoon on KZfaq is bad because of the people on it

And yey its great that indie is getting more attention but will this really last in long trem if the internet doesn't leran to just change for the better and stop with the toxicity perfection was the entire smg4 its gotta be perfect actually predict the future of indie animation people wanting every single indie product to be a gravity falls and wanting it to be perfect with no flaws and even creators hurting themselves the way smg4 did to just make a perfect vidoe as a representation of indie creators having to deal on the internet on a bassist when doing a series and has internet people leran nothing and still blindly ignore the good shows from mainstream and they treat mainstream like its there firend even if its really dumb to think that

As for my own ideas… I have had an idea for a long long time for an animated series that uses 2D characters (frame by frame/rigged hybrid models) against a pseudo-simplified 3D animated environment, that resembles early CGI in stuff like early PIXAR shorts and those CGI segments/elements in the PBS Kids show, Between the Lions! The story is kind of a Dr. Jackle, Mr. Hyde kind of story, but with the zany-ness of Beetlejuice and the Mask, all wrapped up in a certain aesthetic that indie horror fans know all too well… and as of typing this, I have the overall series generally mapped out in my head, and I have drawn the main cast so many times I can draw them from the most insane camera angles! I just need to get the first script drafted! Also, My current plan as of typing this (things can always change) does involve moments that most likely will require you to grab a lot of tissues…and I mean…A LOT! I’M TAKING NOTES FROM PIXAR’S CRY FACTORY FOR THIS ONE! (As of typing this at least! Again, things could change! Don’t hoard all the Kleenex just yet!😅) One last thing: I love meta humor and fourth wall breaks, so I will use them in this, BUT…I’m not gonna go overboard! Don’t worry!👍

I feel like another issue is audiences feeling entitled to a certain show going the way THEY want it to go and not respecting the creators choices. One series I watched the creator got death threats and had to delete their twitter account because people harassed him because the series ended on a cliffhanger and in a way they didn't want. While I think it was a dissapointing ending, I know that harassing someone over such a thing is way too far.

I myself am working on a short that will be the pilot of a series, although right now I am in a very early stage of writing and creating a separate channel for the project, sometimes I get discouraged by my lack of ability to explain The series is going, but I try to encourage myself to be able to better express the chaos that goes through my head and well, trying to do all this in a third world country that does not usually pressure animation and art in general, it doesn't help but see how you do. They manage to continue even being in a worse situation than me and completely alone, it motivates me to continue with everything without fear, And well, the fact that the general public sees indie productions in the same way as those from large companies can be a double-edged sword, since on the one hand they already see it as an equal but they may have very high expectations about what to see. in them, Personally, the real problems (in addition to money and high expectations) is this toxicity that exists in the haters of certain projects, this has already been seen especially in indie video games and it also goes hand in hand with this "moral puritanism" "The truth is that this is the real problem because let's be honest, if they were screwing you 24/7 you would have already abandoned and canceled everything, while you are reading this I'm sure that about five cases of this have already come to mind." what am I talking about, There are also other things, but I would be more related to the people who work behind these projects who perhaps should deal with the issues more maturely instead of fighting among themselves because three years ago they fought on a dircord server, Fortunately this doesn't happen that often, but they will still have to be more professional and adults to talk about this instead of hinting at each other. well even with all their failures in this young comunnity i am have hope for the future

It has more to do with how society treats people as "commodities" and "products". Much like how social media influencers promote themselves as some "brand" based on a more generic "relatable" slice-of-life fantasy. Fame also plays a role since many online people with a fanbase end up turning arrogant and trying to craft an unrealistic image of themselves (which becomes an issue when controversies of their bad deeds come into light, be it actual crimes or just petty personal fights they had with an old friend)

It's named The Legend of Lakko, it's an adult indie animated project about a Skulldog named Lakko, who wakes in a tomb after centuries of being asleep. He wakes to find the truth of his past, and to find out what happened. Would love to talk with you on this and possible have it in a video! I'm working to get into SVA in 2024 for 2D Animation, and my portfolio is looking good so far. If you are a fan of Castlevania, and maybe a little Legend of Zelda and other related medias, you will surely enjoy it. It's adult for blood and other violence.
