It can write emails, essays and even songs. It has created award-winning pieces of art, and it’s one reason that Hollywood is on strike. That’s right-today’s podcast episode is about artificial intelligence.
Generative AI programs such as ChatGPT, DALL-E and Midjourney are worrying artists of all kinds about the future of art. Is AI coming for artists’ jobs and livelihood, or is it a helpful tool pushing art to a new horizon?
Jason Allen used generative AI to create his work “Théâtre d'Opéra Spatial,” which won the Colorado State Fair’s annual fine art competition in 2022, making news headlines. He says artists should be excited and more open to working with AI as a new artistic medium that can help break down barriers and democratize art for everyone. On the other side, Molly Crabapple, award-winning artist and writer, says artists-and everyone-should be concerned about generative AI, arguing that these programs are not only stealing from, but “sucking the lifeblood,” from living artists. Additionally, she contends that the limited creativity of AI art programs will ultimately impoverish human culture. Watch the Doha Debates Podcast as our guests debate the controversy surrounding AI art, the economics of artificial intelligence and the future of art around the world.

funny thing this DND and RP stuff, see as an artists i profit from that... i take commissions, i draw them... the client will tell me what they want... and i'll do it... what ai art will do however is take that away from me... it will take from the artists, and artists won't get anything... this literally a derivative of searching from google and taking pictures from it but this time artists can't sue anyone because technically what the "ai artists" will get is a combination of things taken from internet made by artists combined by ai... they won't need to pay any artists anymore...

Absolutely fascinating debate on the impact of AI on the creative community! It's evident that we're at a crossroads where technological innovation can either enhance or hinder our creative processes. Each debater brought unique insights to the table. Personally, I lean towards the idea that AI can be a powerful ally for creativity, but it's crucial to navigate this integration carefully. Looking forward to seeing how this dialogue evolves as we find ways to leverage technology responsibly in the creative realm. Striking the right balance will remain key in the coming year

This discussion is very insightful to both sides mindset and worldview. I am both an illustrator (manual) and an AI generator user, I can understand both sides and honestly both are valid.

Loving this discussion. What about AI bias? Interested in what we can do to counteract AI art that perpetuates dangerous stereotypes.

I could have the same idea as an AI in what paint but the idea came from my life experience, personal views & will be a brand of mine which will make it more valuable for people to buy. People buy paintings from a painter not just because it looks good, also the meaning behind it. AI could have value in creating artistic music videos or movie but the creation will be an idea and view of a human trying to express something very specific.

Before watching this debate I never really considered the tremendous impact that AI can have on "working class" artists that design book covers for example. Though this emerging technology does bestow a plethora of benefits, it has the capacity to wipe out a host of careers and countless livelihoods. Not to mention, art is not merely meant to convey images, it is meant to convey emotion, particularly the ones felt by the artist, not the AI. Think of the eccentric nature Van Gogh's Starry Night, it is no way an accurate depiction of what the sky was, but rather a depiction of what Van Gogh felt as he gazed into the vastness of the celestial bodies that adorned the deep darkness of the night. Art is an integral aspect of the human experience, without it's authenticity, which can be brought about through human artistic expression alone, we stand to lose a part of who we are as a people.

It harms us. In every way. The only usage that should be allowed is the one where you can save the many different versions of a work, or make models of it to then realize them in the material artwork. Other than that, it's harmful. We should also consider the fact that virtual artwork provides advantage to relatively well-off people that might not be artists but can afford all the newest software compared to real artists who might not be so up to date or informatically savy. This applies to figurative arts but as well to other fields. Think auto tune, for example. It's killing the art of singing and music in general.

13:47 it already has. Many commissions artists are losing work. Everything this guy has said so far has been wrong.

A few things I would have liked to see included: 1. Many models used in AI are not produced by well-funded organizations, but by small groups or even individuals. The optics of professional artists or companies going after those would probably come off as very similar to how the music industry went after file sharing in the 00’s, which is probably not a strategy to replicate. This has major implications for any sort of restriction or compensation regime. 2. There’s a freedom of the press aspect that I feel is greatly under discussed. AI generated content is likely to be useful for speculative articles, particularly in entertainment journalism. I’ve used it to frame discussions around possible future Pokémon movies and found it quite valuable. It could also be useful for court transcripts and other similar situations. As long as this content is disclosed as AI generated, I don’t see a major issue, and I don’t like the idea of a person or company being able to exclude themselves from that kind of analysis.

I think one of the reasons that the art community is divided about this is that different people have encountered a different mix of appreciation for their work. If your friends/family/clients/etc. have been supportive, you might feel more positively about the future than if you’ve encountered a lot of dismissive individuals. I’m sure there are exceptions, but I think it does influence perspectives.

18:46 what that means is they wont need to pay the artists their stealing from anymore because anyone can use the prompts. Even this table top neckbeard for example.

I watched the debate on the impact of AI on the creative community. to be honest, I started to like this technology called AI after watching KZfaq Doha Debates. Initially I was among those who opposed this technology because I considered this AI to be able to replace humans but gradually I understood that the function of AI was not replacing but perfecting human activities and this was actually good considering today's world indeed the technology has developed rapidly and the products produced have on average great quarterly and competitiveness. Also in the education sector, this really helps students in the learning process, maybe at first they only understand how to copy and paste but slowly they will analyze every work produced by AI and learn from the patterns produced by AI itself which Later this will open up opportunities for children to create their own version of AI, each with its own unique qualities.
