Today we are taking a look at the GFX 50R as a digital alternative to the Hasselblad XPan. The XPan has gotten incredibly expensive in recent years and this has made me go on the hunt for a digital alternative. What do you think of the 50R and how close does it get for you?

A great review summarising the pros and cons of the 50R as an X-pan alternative. I had one but sold it largely because I was struggling with the ergonomics (particularly lack of grip). I didn't realiser how much I'd miss the files though. I stupidly thought the X-T5 with its 40MP sensor might be an effective alternative. It isn't. (Although it's still a great camera). So I bought a used 50s for £1000. It's practically mint - only used in a studio I think. I'm getting on with it so much better than the 50R, even though it's a little bigger and heavier. So happy to have those files back (and, of course, the 65:24 crop!)

Thanks for the video. I shoot 35mm film in my Mamiya RB67 medium format SLR as an alternative to the Hasselblad XPan film panoramic camera. I can create 68:24 images compared to the 65:24 images created by the XPan. Plus, after I develop the film, I have the option of including or excluding the sprocket holes in the image.

What I do with my 50R is set each film sim C1-C6 to a different white balance option either Daylight, Shade, Custom (set & then shifted/tinted)... it is not perfect but it allows to keep your shift/tint in tact when you switch between C1/C2/C3 etc.. and also it reminds you which tint value you should use for that film sim should you want to apply that shift using the K-value WB option or any other..

i'm kind of chasing the same dream here; shooting anamorphic stills with a laowa 35mm nanomorph on a nikon zf. image circle doesn't quite cover the full frame, but after cropping i'm close to a 28mm horizontal FOV at a 2.4:1 aspect ratio. wish the zf could desqueeze the image live, in-camera, but composing isn't too bad with the 1.5x squeeze. really wish the anamorphic lenses had a bigger max aperture too, cuz i'm a sucker for that 3d dof pop.

Hi man! Greetings from Spain. Or you are fine with that

I actually do the same thing, include the WB R/B shift in each recipe name. The only downside to the 50R 65:24 aspect is the relatively small size of the file. It just occurred to me that a 50S II can deliver higher rez using its Pixel Shift but of course that camera is much less appealing to shoot than the R (I started with a SII then replaced it with a used R).
@calebbrunkow

@@chrizzzsmith7467 there's a few free with Photoshop if you find the folder they're in. I have a velvia one too I like but forgot where I found it. Really if you just look online for any film inspired LUTs and apply them over a neutral profile you should be good, but the camera does allow for a lot of tuning like highlights/shadows/noise/sharpness/grain/contrast/saturation in camera per profile so you could get really specific with your look if you want.

Great video! I have the Xpan 2 and had the 50R. I sold the 50R just because I personally don't enjoy using digital cameras because of the complex menu systems and too many options to customize buttons. I still have my Kipon adaptor that allows me to use my Xpan lenses on the GFX system. I've actually been considered repurchasing the 50R just because of film costs are just too crazy and the 50R could help bring that cost down. As well I could get a macro lens and use the 50R to scan my film negatives. I've bought and sold the 50R twice now and this time around it will be my 3rd time owning it but after watching this video, I think I'll commit since as you mentioned, it is the closest option digitally.
