Recipients of a 2-word email or text as basic as… “Nice job” or “Great work” are misinterpreting these messages a whopping 60% of the time! Really, no Really!
If we are misconstruing simple and clear communications this often and assuming that our intended messages have been easily understood…and they are not…we could be in the midst of a real miscommunication crisis!
With technological communication growing exponentially and younger people often shunning older more analogue forms of communication (like actual phone conversations) Jason and Peter hunted down a man who could explain why such rampant miscommunication is happening, how to prevent it, and what our collective future looks like. That man is Dr. Nick Morgan, a legend in public speaking, a leading expert in rhetoric and body language and a sought-after communications theorist and coach.
Nick has worked with both political and educational leaders and is frequently commissioned by Fortune 50 companies to coach their CEOs and presidents.
IN THIS EPISODE:

The way video conferencing has altered how we communicate.

Guys, I cannot agree more that someone merely clicking the like button is pretty petty. That's why I use the narrative responses that Gmail and Outlook provide. Like "Ok, thank you for informing me." Great show!

Yes,a close to close talking via phone can suddenly turn to make a conversation seem longer and complicated.

When texted a message can be "diluted."A verbal conversation can be right to the point.

What happens is so much interaction is disingenuous, people are drained by the political intrigues of in-person communication. If we can get the pertinent information and keep it moving, it's better than the glad-handing, brown-nosing, pecking order set-ups that come with the in-person workplace. When managers and executives stop rewarding ruthless behavior, there will be more willingness to interact. Until then, people will take steps to protect themselves from energy vampires.

Just a general note about the show, it distracts from the interviews and listening in general when Jason and Peter verbally elbow each other out of the way for the spotlight every 3 seconds. One of you (usually Jason) will attempt a joke, and then laugh at their own joke for a very long time, because they know the other one is just going to talk over them, but they want the audience to know they said something funny. Great guests and interesting topics throughout the series though~

The reason why all the young kids don't use the laughing emoji with the tears coming out the eyes (😂) is because it's "cringe" to Gen Z, for some reason lol. Maybe because they don't want to be like millennials or adults that use that emoji more often. The skull (💀) is now used as the emoji for laughing/when something is funny.
