Been hearing a lot more about Lockbit recently. They've been in the news here after a large children's hospital was subjected to a ransomware attack by Lockbit, who later apologized and offered a free decryption key after claiming one of their partners was behind the attack.

The more technology you have then more controls someone else can have over you.

I think a more likely senario with those digital license plates is the abitlity to track, steel the car, and then ensure they are not marked as 'Stolen', and change the plate number to something else so it doesn't even show up in the police database of stolen vehicles.

Once these digital plates become popular I imagine there’s gonna be a huge scene for modified firmware on these things. Imagine clicking a button and boom, you now have fake plates and can evade police. Sometimes when it comes to technology less is better.

sounds great being able to hide your plate and then restore it when you see a patrol, no speeding tickets for you! :D But still, what were they thinking making it legal, it's obvious anyone could even replace the entire internals of that e-ink plate.

I would've have much rather the security auditor start "reigning hell" than to disclose the vulnerability. I mean there truly is a valid argument to make that disclosing it will hurt our digital security much, much worse in the long run. Exactly the same as happened with the rapid and uncontrolled expansion of IoT-devices, except much worse due to license plates not being a gimmick.

Subscription for a license plate... I swear that's just one stone in the direction of completely bankrupting everyone... The traditional way to produce license plates (at least in my country) is to produce them somewhere where there is already heavy security - Like in a prison. You get the guarding literally for free and the prisoners can earn money to start over when they get out instead of continuing to commit crime because they have no other way to sustain themselves.

I like that it shows the vehicle as stolen. Very usefull. It should become blinking red and blue and have a spaker with police siren to scare stealers.

This would only work in states where the license plate remains with the vehicle, like in CA! In states like PA the license plate gets moved from vehicle to vehicle & is registered to the owner & their current car!

I seem to recall a rather well known case of someone incrementing numbers in a URL and then going to prison for a companies total lack of security. Now there was hi-tech license plates just about as insecure which seems far worse. Someday they will start holding companies with lax security liable instead of blaming the people that find said flaws.

If that thing interfaces via ODB it's a walking vulnerability the CAN bus on the ODB port has no type of protection against malicious attackers

People in my hood used to just physically take people's plates then do C R I M E. Now this just seems to be somehow even more worse. Just no. This is begging for not only the government and third parties to track you even more but straight up waiting for some crims to take advantage of this even more.

what happens to the mail already in the system when this hit? would the mail and packages just get stuck bouncing around the system in the trucks or will it still get delivered but would have to be done like before royal mail upgraded to technology where they would have to read each label and drive the mail and packages to the destination cities and deliver to their post offices?

we could be making plates out of much less resource heavy materials but naw, tablets, rare earth minerals be damned. Fender bender? Sorry mate, fork over money for a new plate. Are we allowed to repair them ourselves? I'd bet not. The waters are already muddled on these telematics issues in automotives and who can repair what depending on your state/dealer/car model, I don't think we need to add more confusion.

I think public GPS tracking for all cars similar to ships (marine traffic type thing) is a good idea. Even better, standardized trackers that can communicate or share locations of cars nearby with the same tracker. Probably a really unpopular opinion in this community though.
