Neither is better, we think they'll primarily appeal to different groups of DJs (though sounds like you could be one of those in the middle of those groups), The DDJ-1000srt is a fantastic, pro level bit of kit

Best 2 channel controller this year so far and maybe one of the best ever created from what I see, but for $1500 and no dual effects independently for each channel, no mic echo, no sampler volume, no independent aux channel that's not shared with the mic channel? Come on Rane!!!!

Well technically dual fx are available but you have to dial them in via the software

@@dezfyah even though the hardware fx buttons turns it on/off for both channels, you can still use/apply it independently via those large toggle switches. From what I saw here, you just can't use 2 different effects at the same time simultaneously and and independently of each other --meaning, you can't use an echo on Ch1 and reverb on Ch2 at the same time.

depends what type of DJ you are, if you're not a scratcher or seratto user the similar priced kit from Denon and Pioneer is probably better

Well done! straight to the key points and very informative, this is how reviews should be done. I love everything about this controller, I will definitely get it by the summer. The portability is a must and the features I use most are neatly implemented. This is a win for Rane in my book!

@@digitaldjtips Motorized Platters at this size. It's the most basic and remarkable feature you can make for the feel and accuracy of cueing up tracks. My good ol ttm57 is still in great shape so I'm sure the quality is on point, it's clear that Rane always makes a LASTING impression when it comes to longevity.

Nicely done.. NS7iii owner here, and loading and unloading it to gigs, even with my case on wheels is a pain in the ass.. it’s a tank and weighs a ton, but I still wouldn’t trade it in for anything... Until today 😉. Can’t wait to see it in person and get my hands on it. Thanks DDJT

I am NS7 mk2 owner and I won't trade my NS7 for this little toy from Rane. Even 13 years old NS7 mk1 with FX section is at least at the same level as 2021 Rane One

I'm a NS7iii owner and I'd definitely consider trading it in towards this, the portability difference alone will be a big bonus for a lot of DJs

I have an NS7ii and I feel exactly the same. This unit is basically an NS7ii but I like that it has the effects toggle switches and it's smaller. Too bad I don't have any goddamn gigs (thanks to the lockdowns) that would allow me to save up the money to buy one LOL.

Same here - but still love my NS7 - it´s heavy but unique having the touch sensitive knobs. Never seen anything similar since then and still in love with it!

Great review. You showed things about the Rane I wasn't aware of. The more I learn of it the more I like it. The weight alone got my attention and the build quality is nice. I'm a NS7III owner by the way.

I like this. I use a Rane 72 and 2 Technics and need something more mobile. I'm a lady and have smaller hands so the platter size isn't an issue for me. Great review!

Hello Phil. Very nice unit. Reminds me of my current technics 1200's. I've had these since the 80's. Unit reminds me of the NS7's, but shrinked & appears lighter. Very cool. Thanks!

Can you imagine if this was available back in the 80s, it would have blown our minds. I remember having an argument with my parents around 1985 as my 1200s and mixer I bought as a teen were taking up too much space in the room so my mum bought me a cabinet so I could put one deck on top shelf, mixer in middle and the other deck at the bottom, lol they had no idea about scratching and mixing and hated the sound. If only I had this it would have solved every single problem I had. Kids dont know how lucky they are nowadays when it comes to tech.

It's now listed as "coming soon" on The VIrtual DJ homepage, which means native support is on the way So if you need more options for this controller, and better support for things like direct streaming and STEMS separation, that should be coming shortly :)

Lovely to see it's actually good, I was a little worried seeing the (unflattering) leaked screenshots going around, but it looks great imo. My dream would be a crossbreed of this and the DDJ1000 (Or the S4 mentioned in the review) : 4-channel, more finessed effect controls and of course motorized 7"s. But I'm pretty sure I'm one of 10 people on this green earth who would buy that, so will dream of SC6000Ms for now 😂 Of course, the NS7-III exists, but I'd much rather have the club-like layout...

I recently purchased the Rane One and I love it's compact size. However, there are some design quirks that take some getting used to. The track controls should be to the inside of the controller not the outside. It's not a big enough issue to redesign the controller but it would've been nice since it's one of the most used controls on this device.

Thanks, Phill... an excellent review (as always). It looks like (same other brands like Numark and Native Instrument) this controller has some really daily bases use buttons really smalls, like the CUE button. I love to use the Cue button while I mixing and doing some lives. Pioneer knows that many DJs use the CUe button almost more than Play Button, and from a few years ago they drop the standard size button from their CDJs on the controllers... but, as you say, this controller is specially designed for scratcher Djs and I am not one of them..

This was enormously helpful for me. I was a professional DJ for 4 years and have been out of the game for about 8 years and DAMN the technology has marched on! My beloved NS7 just died and I need to replace it. Was pulling my hair out trying to figure out the options until I saw this. Thanks a million!

Excellent review! This is the best of both worlds. I'm impressed with the amazing features like Serato's scratch bank, portable turntable feel, effect paddles, and a Mag Four crossfader. However, dedicated Serato Flip buttons appear to be missing. I would have also liked to see on-board effects and a strobe light.

Phil - First, your courses have helped guide my transition from the vinyl/cassette/reel-to-reel analogue world to digital. Many thanks! I'm retired, old school, and surprisingly VERY busy - 3 events next week. Did clubs and radio in the 70s/80s on 1200s. Have a DDJ-SX3. If I bought the Rane, it would be for the familiarities/similarities of 1200s. (Scratch functions maybe a bonus.) Am I missing something? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

@@P4boot no I have no inside information But since VDJ natively supports all other RANE mixers and turntable-like controllers, it would surprise me if we don't see native support for the Rane One pretty soon

What I like about about it, is the format is like have the turntable in regular position, rather than battle position. This lets me know they had DJs who prefer two channel mixers, who does beat match in mind. When I first saw this, I knew there is a God. 😁

@@digitaldjtips I'm serious. Who wants to beat juggle on something that small? But for DJing on Serato, it's damn near perfect. This controller even have regular channel faders for better blending. I know DJs are gonna try turntablism on them, but for DJs that prefer to rock parties on turntables and a two channel mixer, this IS the ONE.

I've always been interested in scratching and slowly working my way through your Scratching for controllers DJs course right now. Similar for sure but then again turntables were invented decades ago and they haven't changed much...

Had they managed to cram in a couple of of little led screens for waveforms and track info, it might have shifted my gaze away from a likely impending pioneer purchase, to accompany my ageing 1210mk2s, and replace an old controller. More time looking at the controller and less at the laptop is my pref. Nevertheless, it's nice unit if you are leading with scratching. Great review

Thanks Richard. I guess calling it the “Rane One” makes clear that this is the first, the basic model, leaving the door open for more channels, screens and so on down the line.

Love this one! Good on ya Rane! Only thing i can put my finger on is that you can't (according to this review) select different effects on different channels (at the same time that is. The effect is fixed on both channel until you choose another). But maybe they'll fix that in a firmware update? Hope they do. Anyone else think that one should be able to choose different effects, on the different channels? But it looks great! I might have to get this one.

you can switch them out in software if you like, but not from the hardware.

@@digitaldjtips That i understand. But you can't play different effects on the different decks, when you play live, right? F.ex if you play a song on deck 1, and use effects, those effects are then locked, so you can't use different effects right there and then on deck 2, right? If this make sense.

Yes, but you'd have to select them in the software. There are no buttons or knobs on the hardware that can do this for you.

Hi Phil, does Serato STILL use the loop engine for loop-rolls?, which means you can't loop-roll within a active loop because as soon as you do Serato throws you out the loop!? Unlike Traktor which doesn't have this issue due to Traktors separate FX engine.

Can you please do a review testing a corded and a cordless mic? Some controllers have issues with the mics sounding terrible.

Yes it's definitely better than the FLX6 from a quality perspective but they're in two very different price points

@@digitaldjtips Probably the 2 motorized jog wheels and the fact that its built just like a pair of rane 12's and a 72 mixer but just more affordable.

I was really torn because I wanted to go for the rain 12 but the idea of having to buy both turntables and a mixer that was stopping me. So this might just be what I go for in 2021 when the world is no longer on fire

Finally a contender for the old NS7 ! With rane 12 functionalities ! Do the filters still work with standalone hardware ? ie a Turntable or anything in line in ? And does it need / have a separate power brick (for non computerised use ? Like I'm 1st DJ but need to go with my laptop can the unit still work with a separate power source?)
