Switch needed a racer like this. Big older games is still relevant, because they are now on a handheld.

This is one of the most amazing ports for Switch, devs even bothered to add native support to Game Cube control because it has an analog trigger.

Fantastic technical review, Tom. I've been playing for a few hours and I've found my preferred way to play is handheld mode, with the Graphics settings (plus the HD car pack). Hitting the maximum resolution afforded by handheld mode with all of the visual bells and whistles looks supremely impressive on the screen, and I personally prefer a locked (or close to it) framerate, as opposed to a more variable one. As someone who missed out on Autosport last gen, I'm thoroughly enjoying my time on Switch. Great video as always.

I really, really want to get this to show support to the developers as they did a phenomenal job with this version. I want a physical copy, hopefully it’ll come.

Did you test the Gamecube controls? Spawnwave showed that Grid can recognize the triggers as analog to adjust speed!

I see. A last-gen based port but there's new contents being added. I'm totally fine with it, especially if it runs smooth and looks great. There's a large amount of last-gen games which have gorgeous graphics, I believe those will fit the Switch pretty well. btw I'm really curious bout how much battery life could be extended under that saving mode

Great analysis Tom! I've been holding off on this, but I think I've been convinced to pick it up now. I've heard it even supports the analog triggers on the gamecube pad, which shows a real dedication to optimizing for the platform.

Note: As Spawn Wave pointed out, this game allows you to use analog throttle and braking-not just by mapping them to the right analog stick, but even by using a Gamecube controller! It actually recognizes it as a Gamecube controller, with fully functional analog triggers!

this game ran well on my 2013 amd hp laptop, codemasters really excel at optimized & polished games, dirt 2-3 ran so beautifully on even the crappiest hardware

Thanks for covering this. I've been loving the game since it debuted on Switch. A note though, Grid is better to play when using a controller with analog triggers. It makes it far easier to gauge breaking and acceleration under tight circumstances. Playing Grid with the Joy Con or a Pro controller is doable but not ideal. Even a Gamecube controller is a better choice because it supports analog triggers.

Great video, performance mode really helps to give more information about what's happening. I prefer it over the bells and whistles of quality mode - whenever I try that one I go back to performance within a minute and am relieved at the extra FPS =) . Maybe a dynamic resolution scaler could give the extra push to 60FPS.

Racing and fighting games can generally be relied on high-fidelity visuals because they focus GPU and RAM resources on a few choice elements.

Pretty damn impressive for a portable version of the game. I hope to see adaptive sync in the next Switch. That would make performance mode smoother and more enjoyable. Great job, devs & DF.

Just got a Switch Lite and I picked up this game as well. Coming from playing Gran Turismo Sport on the PS4 I was still very impressed with the game overall. Feels very refined, I noticed Codemasters as one of the publishers. Just off the top of my head I know they also publish the DIRT Rally series of games, goes to show how legit this game is. All it needs is the option to adjust joycon sensitivity and it would be even better. That and online multiplayer would cement it as the #1 racing game on Switch, if it isn’t already.

Props to DF for doing a video on this game. I know it probably wasn’t on their radar until everyone kept commenting saying to do it lol. It’s interesting to see it hardly hits 60fps in performance mode because when I’ve played it it felt like a smooth 60fps. Maybe my eyes suck and I just didn’t know it until now.

First off, yes - the Pro Controller should definitely have been designed with analogue triggers. Frankly, I was surprised to find it wasn't. Perhaps a new model will be. Anyway, I've only had GRID AS for a couple of days - and hadn't played any other titles - but it's a very solid racer. Superb effort by Feral. Anyone on the fence regarding whether to buy it or not...just hit the button - you will not be disappointed. Investigate the custom difficulty mode for maximum enjoyment, however. :)

Digital Foundry, I and many other people hope you do a performance review video on "The Outer Worlds". Im very good with electronics and PCs so I dont need help or anything like that, just enjoy your analysis on games with different hardware.

I wanted a sim racer for Switch and this genuinely is the best the system has to offer. They've updated it several times so it now also has GameCube controller support so you can have full analog acceleration control. I think they might be helped a bit on the performance as well. Not 100% if it's better as I don't have the framerate measuring tools DF uses. I'm also pretty sure they added multiplayer, although I'm not completely sure since I never play online multiplayer anyway. If you're looking for the best sim racer on Switch, I'd start here. Oh, it's also on Android, with the graphics and performance modes too, so you can have a great legit sim racer that's just as good as Real Racing 3, but without the microtransactions.

Wow, that's a last gen title? It looks really good, I didn't realize it was a last generation game until it was pointed out in the video, that is some seriously impressive art direction and tech art. Honestly I am pretty fine with multiplayer being patched in later, better to have added later than in a rushed, compromised state at launch. (or not at all!)

Man sometimes I feel like this comment section is full of people who just got their expensive pc and really need to let other people know that this is unplayable because they play in 4K@120HZ. c'mon guys were talking about a portable device that draws just a few watts of power. Ports like these are usually damn impressive, and let everyone play the game plus you can easily take it with you.

A mobile-style Battery Saver option really makes sense now in the era of Switch Lite.

This is one of the best ports for the Switch. Looks amazing, loads of ways to tweak your gameplay and controls, plenty of options to adjust your visual experience, loads of content with plenty of fleshed out and well executed features to really make the most of the experience. THIS is a good game!

Lack of analog trigger on Pro controller really bothered me with all assistance off. Takes time to adjust to keep RWD car spin in control. But on a plus side it feels like overall car physics in this game actually is better comparing to 2019 PS4 game. All and all it’s pretty great port, especially if you have Gamecube controller and adapter. Analog throttle using sticks never clicked for me unfortunately.

How are the tuning options for this game? I've never played the original. By this question, I mean, what options are able to be tuned with sliders? Such as Camber, LSD, Roll Bars, etc This right here is the main selling point as tuning a car to drive proper is what I enjoy more than the racing aspect, because once it's tuned good you'll dominate no matter what.

Seemed like the performance modes, both docked and portable, had 60fps almost in their grasp. Possibly a drop to the XB1 favourite, 900p would have been enough to even out performance (and maybe 640p portable)?

Shame they didn't go for the Fire Emblem Warriors Performance Mode - 720p docked, but at 60 fps. Maybe even go for a below 720p portable in Performance Mode too, so it can go for locked 60 fps?

I think I played this locked 150 fps couple years ago. Can't wait to play the new game though.

I'm so glad they included a performance mode. Racing games are one of the only genres where I need the framerate as close to 60fps as possible for me to be able to play it. That being said, I rarely noticed drops unless there were a lot of people crashing on screen. Maybe I'm just not sensitive to them unless it dips into the 40s?
