Way back in 2019, I went on my first archaeological dig! It wasn't my first time working on an archaeological site, but it was my very first time excavating with a pickaxe and trowel in hand. My time in Halos, Greece LITERALLY changed my life. Watch me cry on camera.

I can relate to the exhaustion on excavations. As someone once told me, on excavations you don't sleep/nap, you just pass out

Aww thanks for mentioning the cost of field schools and how that's a whole giant gate-keeping thing. Even after finishing my PhD I still have not been able to afford field school. So I feel pretty shafted. If a university expects you to do an exterior field school training in order to go on the dig that your university hosts, they should cover those costs or just give their students training. But apparently that's a foreign concept in the US.

Field school can definitely be tough work (physically and emotionally), especially if you have to travel far away from home. Glad you stuck with it! ;)

The Acropolis is one of my very favourite places in the entire world! It was my dream to go there and see the Parthenon, and I got there in 2017. It was absolutely incredible, I totally understand you being in your own personal heaven!

Going on an Archaeological dig was one, if not THE, best experiences of my life. It was worth the cost to go (which was a LOT of money) and I want to keep going each year. My job only gives me 2 weeks off in the year, so I haven't been able to book the time off to go again, but I would in a heart beat if I could. Thank you for sharing your experiences. They reminded me of how much I loved doing my own digs, even with the sheltering heat and hard work. Even with all the PUNS....so many puns....

@2:00 That is not a problem of the field, rather the commercialisation of education in english colonies.

I'm surprised how much the cost of field schools have gone up. When I started going to field schools (2003), it was a couple hundred to go. Then when I went to my first overseas field school in Belize it was 1,500 the first year, 750 the second year (since I was returning), the third year it was even cheaper (basically just paying for food, etc). Now i look at field schools and they're all so expensive and often only open to students. Then I went to grad school in Germany and worked a site there with the uni and didn't pay anything except getting there and back. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself!

It's such a shame that people who are so dedicated should have to pay so much for experience on dig sites; I would have thought that institutions such as museums and universities would be crying out for volunteers. I was long-term unemployed back in the early 90s and managed to find my way on to a government-backed scheme working with Leicestershire County council's Archaeology unit. I spent an entire year digging exploratory trenches, field-walking, washing finds, and scraping soil with a trowel; some of the best days of my life spent with some of the greatest people.

Gosh. I know during my field schools this summer I had some of those same thoughts and feelings. Regardless, it was well worth the time since I had a blast and earned a lot. However my field school was probably very different here in Mississippi than in Halos.

Hi! Are you from the Netherlands? If not, how did you start studying there? I really want to study archaeology abroad. I did field school in the U.S., and holy hell it was expensive. It would be very cool to do it abroad and not have to become even more broke!

Sweet, honest, real, captivating, beautiful and sincere! What a woman! Enjoyed your vlog very much, I even had tear for you. There is no doubt your special, dont ever change! To deliver the inner most feelings is hard, now days people will do anything to look good, forgetting that a true and open person is the most beautiful. Thank you for being open and honest. Did I sense you had a little crush on someone? Your a diamond! Actually, am I trying to propose weirdly? :) :) :)

Ah yes first archaeology dig: Day 1: Excitement Day 3: Exhaustion from early morning wake-ups and full days of shoveling dirt Day 8: Existential dread of rethinking life choices that led you to this moment... And then the ethongraphies of being a socio-cultural anthropologist kicks in and it's not just 2-4 week archaeology digs anymore, but 6-18 month field studies...
