I've broken it down into multiple categories, and various levels of necessity in order for you all to live your best excavation life! These are all of the archaeological tools you might need, and more to have the best time on your dig. I've also left out the normal travel basics because let's be honest, I shouldn't have to be the one to tell you how many pairs of underwear you need to pack in an archaeology video. Let me know if I've missed anything you can't live without while on site! And if you're going on a field school this summer, comment below on where it will be! I want to hear about all of your excavations!

This was great. I haven't been on a dig since grad school. I ended up doing something else: $10 per hour for contact work wasn't working :( But I loved this! It's interesting to see how little has changed: this was basically my packing list 20 years ago. The only thing I always packed that you didn't was a long skirt for museums/churches on the weekend, but maybe you don't need those anymore? Thank you for this! It makes me miss it.

Schliemann package... Honni soit qui mal y pense. 😂😂😂 Also the best trowel is the one you have available to you. I guess a sleeping bag liner could be useful. Trousers by Engelbert Strauss! Great workwear brand! Love their roughtough line since it hasn't failed me so far. Also love their Altra boots, full S3 level protection! Also you might want to consider a hydration bladder to take more water with you because that 1 litre probably won't cut it in hot weather.

Did you check out the soldering and steel on WHS? The blade will make 10 digs at least! Anyway, I think it's very smart to choose your trowel depending on what soil you're going to dig: not every soil you're going to dig need small, thick trowels.

One thing I'm wondering: do archiologists ever come into conflict with grave robbers? I mean I've heard at least one account of one getting mugged for items to sell on the black market while he was excavating a myan ruin. Does your crew ever employ locas as security? Do digging tools ever get pressed into service as weapons of opertunity?

Talia, if you are looking for a fully waterproof dig bag, I can recommend the Zulu bags. I work only on rescue digs where it doesn't matter if it's raining or not and that bag can take mud, water and you can throw it at the excavator if needed.

JUST subscribed! Watched a few of previous ones...Indy...The Mummy..Tomb Raider. SO educational. And fun. And animated. Not that you're a cartoon....but entertaining. Any theater background? What is the site in Oman? Would love to work on a dig someday. Would love to finance a dig someday. I tracked a Sasquatch once. Heard of a sighting north...heard of a sighting south. Guessed the probable path of something that big with the available cover. Intersected myself randomly. Found footprints. You'll be pleased that I documented it all. I know, I know: NOT archaeology. More The Mummy 3. Which was not the same without Rachel Weisz.

@classicslover

A turtle reserve? Must be on the coast then. You got to use the bathing suit you packed! Cool! And my background is film...and theater...and TV, so yes...with the Mummy movies the Brendan Fraser/Rachel Weisz relationship was the core of those films, so switching out Rachel for ANYBODY no matter how talented...just no. AND because of my background...trust me: YOU are talented Raven. Great presence and comfort on screen, entertaining and educational without making us feel that you are "dumbing it down" for us! You appeal to a broader audience that way. Let's just say I am impressed. Kudos!

This is largely identical to what I would pack in the army. I would add a camelbak with the water bottle as well as purification tablets. With the sleeping bag I would add an air mattress or foam roll to sleep on. Most of my kit is in cadpat which I would avoid using in certain places.
