Diluting liquid soap paste - mixing 100% coconut oil soap paste with 100% olive oil soap paste. Hope you enjoy this video!
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
A Few videos back, I have made a 100% coconut oil liquid soap using the cold process method. Here is the link to the video if you would like to revisit: • Cold Process Liquid So...
I actually made a 100% olive oil liquid soap using the cold process method too. The reason why I have made two 100% oil liquid soap is I wanted to play with the soap formula after the soap paste is made, adjusting the amount I use depending on what I want the soap to be used for. This is one thing I like about making liquid soap - there is still this kind of flexibility after the soap is made, which is not the case with bar soaps.
To dilute liquid soaps you need to decide on two things:
- The weight your container can hold
- soap to water ratio
The weight of the container is what you have on hand. Soap to water ratio depends on how concentrate you want your soap to be. Some ratios I use for your reference:
- 1:1 cleaning purposes
- 1:3 hand or body washes with a squirting pump
-1:5 hand or body wash with a foaming pump
You can always adjust your soap paste formula after the soap has been made like what I have done in this video. It's just like back to step one with putting the numbers into the lye calculator.
Dilution example in the video:
500g container with a 1:3 soap to water ratio
500/4= 125g
125g of soap paste to 375g of water
I want to make a soap formula of:
70% olive oil
30% coconut oil
125g x 0.7= 87.5g
125g x 0.3= 37.5 g

hi, im curious how i do the math for 100% coconut oil paste for 250ml soap bottle? 1:3 water then how is it? sorry im confused. really hope that you can reply this comment!✨
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 2 жыл бұрын
If you have 250ml bottle and want to do a 1:3 ratio so you divide 250 by 4 which equals to 62.5g. So 62.5g of soap paste diluted by 187.5g of water! Thank you for watching

Hi..Thankyou so much for the video..I am finding it difficult in dilution...How long does it take to get dissolve completely..Should i use blender or beater to dissolve??thankyou
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on your soap formula, if you don’t use heat, it can take up a day to dissolve. Patience is much needed, if you don’t have time, you can dissolve it by heating it up.

Will adding salt help the soap paste dillute faster?
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks Жыл бұрын
Adding salt will make the soap paste thicker. But it won’t work if you do it to the 100% coconut soap.

Do you use distilled water to dilute and to make the cold press soap?
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is best to use distilled water to avoid minerals affecting the saponification process and to avoid contamination. Thanks.

And for body wash, can i just dilute it until i have a thickness i like? And if the ph is still high, can i just neutralize it with citric acid until the ph is 7?
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use it right away as long as it passes the zap test. Just note the soap will just lather better if you sequester it for a few weeks.
@TheScraftworks

You can dilute until your desired thickness but usually handmade liquid soaps dilute quite thin - you can try using a salt solution or other thickeners if you really want that texture. It’s best to just use a foamer bottle. I’ve never felt the need of using citric acid to neutralise it as even bar soaps have a high pH and are skin friendly. Hope this helps

Yes as Gee mentioned some fragrance oils and essential oils affect thicken up the soap or separate the soap. That’s why it’s best to do a test batch with your liquid soap so all your hard work doesn’t go to waste!

How to know when liquid soap is for face skin or for cleaning and cloths?
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 2 жыл бұрын
Usually soaps with higher percentage of coconut oil has a higher cleansing power and ones with olive oil is more moisturising. You can definitely still use a high percentage coconut oil soap on your body/face if you have oily skin. But if you are looking for something more moisturising you may pick the ones with higher percentage olive oil.

Liquid soap watery 🤷🏻‍♀️ So I make liquid soap all the time and my standard rule is, soap paste weight must be diluted with hot water, double the weight of the soap paste and if needed I’ll add a bit more water in small quantities if it needs a little more diluting. Now a few days ago I made liquid shampoo, and I used the same rules, unfortunately my soap got super watery so I had to thicken it with salt. This of course didn’t go so well and my soap got too thick even though for a moment it didn’t seem like it so I added the soap to the bottles, overnight it turned into a big thick substance that wouldn’t move. So I took it all out, diluted it again and thought it was of a good consistency, added it to the bottles again and yep, next day it was super thick again… so I decided to make a whole new batch yesterday and instead of doubling the paste weight in water, I used the same weight of water as the soap paste. The soap paste was 2200 grams so I weighed the water to the same weight, heated it and let it dilute till the next day which is now. I just checked my soap and it’s again as watery as it was when I used double the amount of water!! I thought I’d be on the safe side when adding much less water so I could dilute it slowly and get it that honey like consistency. I just don’t understand why it’s going wrong 😑 does anyone know what could cause this? My recipe: Almond oil 10% Babassu oil 15% Castor oil 12,5% Coconut oil 10% Jojoba oil 10% Lard 20% Tallow 22,5% Replaced the water lye mixture with ACV and added silk to the hot lye mix. Added glycerin to the soap paste and water mix. Which I always do with my liquid soaps. Does anyone know why my liquid soap is so watery? Because I normally with my other soaps always double the soap paste weight in water…. As I’ve seen and read from other soap makers as well…

I’m not sure if here is a natural way to preserve it. If you want a chemical way you can try using suttocide a, glydant plus and the amount you use depends on your total quantity and the preservative you use. You should find out how big of your bottle you want to use before picking on the quantity of soap to dilute and how concentrated you want your soap to be.
