Alcohol to a certain point is an anti-anxiety drug, though at a certain point alcohol leads then to confusion, then towards total loss of coordination, and finally a black out - It would appear to me that Phil was at the stage of losing coordination given his lack of /any/ semblance of balance. Once again it does not excuse what he said, but he /did/ openly come out and apologize for it. Deeply apologized for it. And since the 90's his music has done nothing more than attempt to boost people's confidence - Just look at the song 'No Good (Attack the Radical)' where he attacks white and black militants alike and claims someone living alone with their own race only would lose all diversity and be in a prison cell.

In Pantera very rarely they had technical issues, but here it was bad luck and bad vibes on all ends. The salute definitely was for shock value, because he got tackled by the audience. The organizers should be ashamed of themselves, regarding handling the sound and engineering. Shutting Phil of must’ve offended him also. It was a shitshow from A to Z not doing justice to one of the greatest guitarists and bands of all time.
